hospital was founded by the Bon Secours

The Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons Annual Scientific Meeting. In Nov 2012 the hospital successfully co-hosted the ALS Annual Scientific Meeting with Mr. Colm O’Boyle Consultant General and Bariatric Surgeon as Local Organiser. This leading-edge surgical and academic conference featured live laparoscopic surgery including gastric bypass, low anterior resection and splenectomy carried out here in Bon Secours Hospital Cork.
Annual General Practitioner Study Day The hospital held their 42nd Annual General Practitioner Study Day on Sat Jan 26th in The River Lee Hotel. The day, now a popular annual event, consisted of a choice of 14 educational sessions & multidisciplinary workshops on a range of topics relevant to General Practitioners presented by Bon Secours Hospital Consultants & staff and was ICGP approved and CPD accredited.
Book Launch “Weight Loss, A Comprehensive Guide to Weight Loss Surgery” The Bariatric Multidisciplinary Team at Bon Secours Hospital, Cork has together written a book published by Currach Press Ltd. This book, “Weight Loss, A Comprehensive Guide to Weight Loss Surgery” edited by Gillian Moore Groarke Clinical Psychologist and Mr. Colm O’Boyle Consultant Bariatric Surgeon was officially launched in Jan 2013. In conjunction with this launch, the Hospital in association with 2020 Art Gallery devised and curated an exhibition of artworks “Mirror, Mirror - Beauty & Perception” The Hospital Management sponsored a bursary to the winning artist. Accreditation The Hospital continues to hold accreditations with Joint Commission International (JCI), European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB).
New Appointments: Dr. Niamh Lynch, Consultant Paediatrician provides a full-time comprehensive Clinical Paediatric Service. She has a special interest in paediatric neurology and provides a rapid access diagnostic service for children referred with neurological conditions.
Dr. Denise McCarthy, Consultant Anaesthetist provides a full-time comprehensive clinical anaesthesia service. Interests: regional anaesthesia, peri-operative pain management, and anaesthesia for patients with cardiac disease and intensive care medicine.
Dr. Michael Murphy, Consultant Radiologist - Interests: Interventional Radiology. He will be taking up his position here late May 2013.
Dr. Paul O’Sullivan, Consultant Radiologist - Interests: Musculoskeletal Imaging, Cross Sectional Imaging and PET-CT Imaging. He will be taking up his position here early June 2013.
Dr. Suzanne O’Sullivan, Consultant Gynaecologist will be commencing in the Hospital in February 2013. Dr O’Sullivan will be providing uro-gynaecology services in the Hospital
Awards Kieran McNamara, Health /Safety Officer has won the Major Category One National Award for Occupational Safety for the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork.
Dr. William Fennell was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2012 Irish Healthcare Awards. The award is presented to a doctor, who in the view of colleagues or patients, has made an outstanding contribution to Irish medicine during their career. He was presented with his award at the Irish Healthcare Award ceremony held in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin on 1st November 2012.
IT Award - A commendation was presented to Bon Secours Hospital Cork, for its entry in the 2012 Irish Healthcare Awards - ‘Best Use of information Technology’ which has been recognised by the 2012 awards adjudication panel for its focus on improving patient care, innovation and collaboration.

Laparoscopic banding, bypass, sleeve and duodenal switch have been performed here since 2008, with over 150 patients treated successfully to date. The bariatric service is managed by a Multidisciplinary Team comprising of a Bariatric Surgeon, Consultant Respiratory Physician, Consultant Cardiologist, Consultant Anaesthetist, Consultant Endocrinologist, Specialist Nurse Practitioner, dedicated Dietetics and Physiotherapists.

DAffODIL CENTRE In 2011 the new Daffodil Cancer Information Centre opened in Bon Secours Hospital, Cork. The Centre provides a wide range of information, advice, help and support locally to the patient, relatives, healthcare professionals and the general public.
The Centre is staffed by an experienced cancer nurse who is supported by trained volunteers, it is a free service, with no appointment necessary and is located just off the main hospital foyer.

DIABETES SPECIALIST SERVICEDr. Eoin O’Sullivan, Consultant Endocrinologist provides a full-time comprehensive Clinical Endocrinology Service. His main interest is in all forms of diabetes, especially those in whom attainment of glycaemic, lipid and blood pressure goals are difficult to achieve. He also has an interest in thyroid disorders, hypercalcaemia and disorders of sodium metabolism.

The Intensive and Coronary Care Unit is a nine bed combined unit which prides itself on continuous modernisation and development utilising the latest techniques, treatments and equipment to provide the highest possible standards of care. The Unit caters for a wide range of medical and surgical conditions, from Acute Coronary Syndrome to Post Operative Care following major surgery. We also provide invasive and non invasive respiratory therapies and renal support to the critically ill. The department is operated 24/7 and accepts emergency admissions.

NEUROLOGYD.r Peter Kinirons M.B.B.Ch B.A.O., M.R.C.P.I., Ph.D has an established practice in Cork and works at the Hospital as a Consultant Neurologist and Clinical Neurophysiologist. He offers a high standard of clinical care, consulting with the patient to understand, investigate, diagnose, treat and manage disorders of the brain and the nervous system.
His clinical expertise encompasses General Neurology and Neurophysiology with a particular interest in Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Movement Disorders, Migraine and Motor Neuron Disease.
Investigations including the latest neuroimaging techniques and neurophysiology are available in the Hospital. The Neurology service also encompasses a dedicated multi disciplinary team of health professionals: Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Dietitian, Speech and Language Therapy and specialist nursing.
Neurology Services can be accessed by faxing or e mailing a referral letter. All new patients are seen within four weeks as outpatients. For urgent cases direct admission can be arranged.

The department also offers a wide range of medical services such as corneal topography and tomography examinations, IOL Master biometric examinations, OCT examination, fundus photography and retinal ultrasound examinations and visual field analysis.
The Ophthalmology Suite is located in the Out-Patients Department on the basement level. The facility includes a dedicated waiting room and 3 treatment suites, one of which is solely dedicated to procedures such as intra-vitreal injections. The assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the eye conditions can be undertaken in this dedicated area, adding to patients’ convenience and comfort. Many patients are treated using a consultant led multidisciplinary team approached such as Diabetic Retinopathy screening and treatment. Many of the procedures are covered by health insurance.

The urology department, in combination with the medical oncology and radiation oncology consultants, provides a complete and multidisciplinary approach to all urological cancers. A weekly multidisciplinary conference (MDT) discusses all new and ongoing urological cancer cases, enabling urological cancer care at the Bon Secours Hospital to be provided at the highest level of excellence.
Our experience includes one of the largest series of radical prostatectomies in Ireland with excellent cure and low complications rates and a structured system for patient follow up after surgery, including appropriate rehabilitation in terms of continence and sexual function. We offer rapid access referral for all potential cancer patients in order that clinical consultation and appropriate diagnostic tests can occur without any significant delay in these patients.
Our services for benign urological ailments includes a tertiary referral service for percutaneous renal stone surgery (PCNL) and the latest technology in laser stone treatment. Our state-of-the-art urodynamics laboratory is staffed by 4 trained urodynamics nurses and enables accurate diagnosis of all forms of male and female incontinence. We offer a full range of female incontinence surgical procedures with excellent results. Mens Health services include a step by step approach to diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction and multidisciplinary approach to hormone replacement therapy in appropriate patients.
