Department of Mechanical EngineeringDepartment of Mechanical Engineering, the largestdepartment in the Institute, offers regularundergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degreeprogrammes. It also offers part time doctoral degreeprogrammes, mainly meant for those employed inindustries and academic institutions. It offers anumber of continuing education programmes too, forindustry personnel. Summer/Winter schoolssponsored by the AICTE/ISTE have also beenorganized by the Department. The faculty provideguest lectures also for many of the neighboringinstitutions. Besides teaching, the members of thefaculty are involved in consultancy work (DesignDevelopment, Energy Auditing, Industrial SicknessEvaluation, Testing etc.), sponsored research work(sponsored by DST, AICTE, ARDB etc.), and productdevelopment

About the InstituteNational Institute of Technology Calicut is one of

set in a picturesque landscape at the foothills of theWestern Ghats, located on the Kozhikode - Mukkamroad about 22 km from Kozhikode city. The Instituteoffers under-graduate, graduate and Ph.Dprogrammes under different departments.

The institute has good infrastructure in computing, information technology, laboratories and centrallibrary including digital library. Calicut is a majorknowledge Hub of Kerala and is the hometown ofinstitutions of national importance including NITC,IIMK, NIELIT, CWRDM etc.

Calicut is connected by direct trains/road/air to allmajor cities in India. NITC is located about 22kilometers north-east of Calicut City. Calicut, alsoknown as Kozhikode, is known as the city of spices.Kozhikode beach, Kappad beach where Vasco DeGama landed first, Kadalundy bird sanctuary,Tusharagiri Waterfalls, Pazhassiraja Museum, TaliTemple and Kuttichira Masjid are some of the localattractions.

IntroductionIn its present day form of industrial usage, pneumatics is arelatively young progeny of technology, gaining traction inthe late 18th century although it had been used in simplerdevices for many centuries before that. Modern pneumaticswith its versatile scope and possibilities did not really beginto supplement the established techniques and forms ofpower and energy in industrial processes until the 1950s.It has since evolved into an extensive and successful branchof engineering. A diversified line of pneumatic equipmentof a mature engineering standard is already on the marketand can be expected to grow further in size and efficiencyin the future. Repeated releases of equipment with newerfeatures and newer application areas demonstrate thecontinuous growth in the field of pneumatics

Objectives of the CourseThe main objective of the program is to expose participantsto pneumatic components, circuit diagrams, PLC programsand systems. Educating people to properly use pneumaticpower is crucial for the economical use of energy. Thethree aspects having a vital bearing on the efficient use ofpneumatic power are : proper designing of pneumaticcircuits, selection of appropriate components forpneumatic system, and good maintenance of a system. Thisworkshop aims to cover the operation and maintenanceprocedures of pneumatics devices thoroughly. It has been

understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the operating principlesof pneumatic and electro pneumatic equipment and theircontrol aspects including programmable logic controllersbased controls.

Course ContentsThe focus of this short term programme will be to provideinformation to the participants on aspects ofpneumatics engineering so that they can not only be able todevelop the same at their institute but also start participatingat solving Industrial problems. Following aspects will bedealt with in the course: Preparation, production, treatment and distribution of

compressed air. Pneumatics valves and actuators Design of single cylinder circuits using pure

pneumatics Design of multi cylinder circuits using pure
