Monday 24th July – Liverpool Trip

We had a great and busy day visiting the Williamson Heritage Centre in the morning, having a quick lunch before going on a tour of Liverpool with our guide Claire.

This is a labyrinth of tunnels underneath the streets of Edge Hill in Liverpool, dug in the early 19th century at the whim of Joseph Williamson. Nobody is sure whether this was an altruistic job creation scheme for soldiers returning from the Napoleonic Wars or simply the folly of an eccentric individual. The facts of how long these tunnels are, how many of them, or even where they are, remain a mystery waiting to be solved. Those that have been discovered have no obvious purpose, and head off in random directions without any clear order.

The after tour included visits to the Anglican Cathedral, the Philharmonic Pub and the Central Library including the Picton Reading Room, finishing with photo opportunity with the “fab Four”.

Tuesday visit to the pretty Laxey wheel.

Steam train which took us to the Point of Ayre at the Northernmost tip of the island.

The speaker Secretary with his hands full and looking pleased with himself as he has found a

couple of speakers (or are they fog horns), at the point of Ayre.

Peel Castle built in the 11th century by the Vikings and stands in what is known as St Patrick’s

Isle and connected by a causeway to the mainland in Peel.

29th October – The Royal Marines at Bridgewater Hall

We enjoyed a spectacular concert from the 55-piece Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, including

their magnificent corps of drums. The concert included military band favourites plus a flag waving

finale with Rule, Britannia! and Land of Hope and Glory.

9th November – “White Christmas” show at the Lyceum Theatre

This was a Curtain Call Production of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” and was brimming

with classic hits such as Blue Skies, Sisters and How Deep is the Ocean. The show was

Directed and Produced by Gail Montague of Yvonne’s School of Dancing and choreographed

by Joel Montague. Everyone enjoyed what was a super show. Particularly the finale with

snow cascading on the audience
