•Too many times we isolate ourselves in our classrooms. To be truly effective, we must reach out. •We teach our students community in the classroom; we must model that by building a learning community on our campus. •Show me a teacher who has it together and also loves to learn, and I will show you a teacher who will go out of his way to help you!

•Seek National Board Certification.

•Attend workshops!!! •READ. . .especially the research behind education. •Observe veteran teachers. Most are more than happy for you to learn from them (at least the good ones are.)

Technology…..EducationWhy is technology

so Important in educating students?

When and How do we make it collide

effectively?

Thanks for Your Work!• Coordinators:

– Dr. Giselle Thibaudeau—MSU– Hailey O’Neal—MSU

• Contributors– Dr. Susan Bridges—MSU– Dr. Sherry Herron—USM– Dr Robert Hester—UM– Ms Essy Levy—Bio-Rad Laboratories– Dr. Fiona McCarthy—MSU– Dr. Bindu Nanduri—MSU– Dr. Andy Perkins--MSU

My Focus

• Interest• Ideas• Knowledge gained• Research ReviewAs I worked and listened, I realized that the

amount of research that is going on and how we, as Instructors, need to involve real time events in our instructions.

When and How

How to save time…• www.google.com

– Use advanced search to narrow search choices– Images– Maps

• www.answers.com• Very useful for remediation• Students complete 15-20 minutes of reading on topic of study• Websites that reinforce topics

Biological Sciences Curriculum Study

• 5 Es– Engage– Explore– Explain– Elaborate– Evaluate www.bscs.org

National Center for Biotechnology Information

• Example of Lessons– High school biology classes offer an ideal

setting for integrating many areas of student interest.

– integrate inquiry science, human health, mathematics, and the interweaving of science, technology, and society.

– Real-life context for classroom lessons www.bscs.org/curriculumdevelopment/

How Do I Afford This?

• Aver Key and Regular TV• LCD—Nice and Clear• Projection Device and Interactive Board• www.donorschoose.org• Raise Funds• Ask for Donations from local Industry• Grants

Why is technology so Important in educating students?

• Students are Technical– Cell phones– Gaming systems– IPOD Touch

• Fighting a losing Battle– Rules on Phones and Technical Devices– Students use more analytical thinking skills

defeating the rules than they actually use learning inside the classroom.

IDEA!• Embrace Technology• Attend Workshops• Stop fighting Technology--

Use it!

Channel the enthusiasm that students have for technology and use it to teach them in the classroom.
