Welcome in my class –First 9 steps

• Be prepared. • Have both materials and ideas on hand,

“just in case.” • Have a welcoming classroom. • Sensitize the class. • Make the student feel welcome. • Make sure you know how to pronounce

and spell the student’s name. • Introduce the student to the class. • If possible, learn a few words and phrases

in the student’s native language.• Be a model of respect for the other students

in the class.

• Find out the level oft the new pupil’s mother tongue

• Let pupils speak in their mother tongue during the breaks (Children should be proud of their language competences.)

TraumaWe cannot really do the work of psychologists, but

we should know where we can find help for obvious traumatized children

• they do not speak• they do not want to have any contact with

others• they start to cry, get aggressive without any

warning • they seem to be stressed all the time• they are extremely nervous• cannot concentrate (because they relive the

traumatic situation if there is a sound, a smell, a color, a word … that reminds them of this situation)

Trauma • What can we do for this children in class:

• School=safe and secure place

• “islands of safety” – clear structures

• arrange or take care for a non violent atmosphere

• To feel safe inside to become quiet and to relax: o Breathing concentration exercises

• Rrelationship has a strong protective factor (“most important person” – outside the family)

Hummer, NAMs Mooc 2016

Trauma

• “I am ok” - strengthen or “repair” the self confidence

• positive and beautiful experiences (pictures, smiles, music, landscape, clouds, animals)

• resources of the pupils (special competences)

• reflect on the future (dreams, visions, wishes)

• if a NAMpupil wants to tell his story, let him tell it, but never force a child to do it.
