2017AnnualReport

FromthePrincipal

2017wasahighlysuccessfulyearforMorleySeniorHighSchool,whichwillbedemonstratedinthefollowingpagesofthisAnnualReport.Itwasayearofconsiderablechangeintheleadershipoftheschool–anewprincipalanddeputyprincipal–andalsoayearofself-reviewandplanningforthefutureBusinessPlan,2018–2020.Afterself-assessmentfollowingthe2016AnnualReport,theStudentImprovementTargetswereamendedfor2017,tobetterreflecttheprogressthathadalreadybeenmadeagainsttheprevioustargets.

Thisyear’sresultshighlighttheeffortsmadetoaddressourStudentImprovementTargetsintheareasofNAPLAN,Year12resultsandstudentattendancerates.OurNAPLANresultshavedemonstratedstrongimprovementintheareasofnumeracy,readingandwriting,whilsttheYear12resultshighlightedsolidprogressinmanyareasandoutstandingachievementinparticularcourses.Ourstudentratesofattendancecontinuetooutperformthoseoflikeschoolsandthestateaverage,whichreflectsasoundengagementwiththeschoolenvironment.Moredetailsaboutthespecifictargetsareincludedlaterinthispublication.

Studentshavecontinuedtoengagewiththemanyextra-curricularactivitiesandopportunitiesofferedbythededicatedstaffintheschool.ConsistentattendanceatHomeworkCentreandBreakfastClub,introducedinTerm4,demonstratesarealconnectionwiththesafeandsupportiveenvironmentprovidedintheschool.MorleyLeos,MorleyTechGirls,theUWAAspireprogramandtheStudentLeadershipgroupscontinuetoflourish,offeringstudentsopportunitiestoleadandstepoutoftheircomfortzones.

Asaresultoffeedback(fromstaffandstudents,aswellasfromparentsviasurveys)severalnewinitiativeswereactioned.Theseincludeamoreactivetransitionprogramofactivitieswithourprimaryschools;thePerformancePlusprogramforincomingYear7studentsin2018;BreakfastClub;transitiontodigitalcommunicationwiththeMorleySHScommunity;andareviewofmanyprocesseswithintheschool.Wehavealsocommittedtoupgradingfacilitieswithintheschool,beginningwithanewhealthcentre,housingtheschoolnurseandpsychologist,andanupgradedCommonRoom.Anupgradeofthelibraryhasbegun,withfurtherenhancementstobemadethroughout2018.

AfterayearasPrincipalofMorleySeniorHighSchool,Icanconfirmthatitisaschoolwithafinehistoryandanexcitingfuture.Thecommitmentbystaffandstudentsisexemplary,andthewillingnesswithwhichthecommunitysupportsnewinitiativesiscommendable.2017sawusachievesomeincrediblegoals,wherestudentsnotonlydemonstratedgreatachievements,butalsostrongprogress.Wewillcontinuetofocusonthewonderfullydiversenatureofourcommunity,andtousethisasameansofsupportingindividualandcommunitygoals.

FromtheBoard

ThispastyearhasbeenoneofgrowthandstabilityforMorleySeniorHighSchoolandfortheSchoolBoard.TheSchoolimplementedtheDirectorGeneral’s2017FocusDocument.Theschool’snewworkforcemembershavemadeasmoothtransitionintoourcommunity,followingthedepartureofseverallong-termstaffmembersandourPrincipalMsFortune.Inourfirsttermfor2017,ournewPrincipalSueGilchristandDeputySueWallishavesettledintotheirnewrolesatMorleyextremelywell.

Ourlocalmember,MsAmberJade-SandersonMLAandtheStategovernmentprovidedtheschoolwith$1.5milliontobeusedtoprovideacoveredareaoverournetballcourts–tobeactionedinthenextfewyears.2017,however,hasprovedchallengingfromaday-to-daybudgetarypointofviewduetotheeffectsoftheone-linebudgetandincreasedcosts.Becauseofthesecutbacksinourbudget,theschoolnowrelies,morethanever,onthevolunteerpaymentoffeesbyourfamilies.Notwithstandingfundspreviouslyavailabletoourvariousdepartments,theBoardiscomplementarytoourstaffformanagingwhilstcontinuingtoensurepositiveoutcomesforourstudentsandschoolcommunity.

Regardingstudentoutcomes,themembersoftheBoardwerepleasedtohearthatMorleySHSwasrecognisedasoneoftheschoolsdemonstratinggainsinNAPLANscoressubstantiallyabovetheaverage.Allofthe2017Year9NAPLANtestingareaslandedinthehigherprogress/higherachievementlevels.Sothiswasajobwelldonebyallconcerned.OurstudentattendancecontinuestobewellaboveStateaverageandisatributetotheadagethat“attendancepays”.Ourstudents,theirfamiliesandourteachingandsupportstaffaretobecongratulated.

TheschoolisstillinneedforfacilityupgradesandtheBoardhasfocuseditsattentiontothismatter.Thereareanumberofissuesbothcapitalandmaintenancethatwewillendeavourtoprioritiseinthebestinterestofwholeschoolcommunity.Thegymnasiumisnowindireneedofreplacement.Amultipurposefacilitycouldseeavarietyofusesincludinghumanitiesandperformingartsaswellasprovidingforahostofsportingactivities.AnewstudentservicescentreisalsoinourlobbyingsightsforStatefunding.

LastyearwewerepleasedtoinvitetwoofstudentstositadjunctwithusontheSchoolBoard.Asitturnedoutthisexperimentworkedoutextremelywellandhasbeenextendedinto2018wheretwoYear11studentswillbeinvitedtoprovidestudentinputintotheworkingsoftheBoard.

Thewhole-schoolandpositiveschoolsapproachbeingfosteredatMorleySeniorHighSchoolhasproventobeawinner.During2017ourteachersandstaffcontinuetoprovideanexcellentenvironmentatMorleySHS,dedicatedtoprovidingawell-groundededucationtoouryoungmenandwomen.

Finally,theBoardandIlookforward,withgreatanticipation,tothechallengesintheforthcomingyearandtoassistinprovidingabrightfutureandthebestofoutcomesforallourstudentsandtheBoardandIarealwaysavailabletodiscussanyissuesthecommunitymayhave.

In2017,theaveragescoreforstudentsatMorleySHSinWritingandNumeracyexceededthoseoflikeschools.TheReadingmeanwasthesameaslikeschools.StudentsdemonstratedstrongprogressandachievementinallYear9NAPLANtests.

Theclassof2017wasthelargesttograduatefromMorleySeniorHighSchoolinanumberofyears.Therewasafallinthepercentageofstudentsgraduating,whichcanbeattributedtoanumberoffactors,twoofwhicharesignificant.Thefirstistheinclusionofstudentswhodidnotattendinyear12,yetwerestillincludedinourdata;andthesecondistheincreaseinthepercentageofstudentswhoonlyachievedintwooutofthethreecategoriesinOLNA.Theoverallperformanceofthestudentswasasexpected.

Studentgainisawaytomeasuretheimpacttheschoolhashadonstudentprogress.Thatis,whenthebackgroundofstudentsatdifferentschoolsissimilar,itismorelikelythatanydifferencesingainmadebyschoolsarerelatedtotheteachingandlearningcapabilitiesoftheschool.In2017MorleySHSwasrecognisedasoneof60WesternAustralianschoolsdemonstratingsubstantiallyaboveaveragegaininstudentWritingandNumeracyachievement,asmeasuredbyNAPLAN,fromYear7toYear9.Gainsofthismagnitudearesignificantandworthyofacknowledgementandcelebration.(ACARA,MySchoolwebsite)

Thesegraphsindicatethatin2015,Year7studentsatMorleySHSscoredbelowtheaverageachievementofstudentsinallAustralianschoolsinNAPLANWritingandNumeracytestsandsimilartostudentsinlikeschools.IntheReadingtest,Year7studentsatMorleySHSscoredwellbelowtheaverageachievementofstudentsinallAustralianschoolsandwellbelowstudentsinsimilarschools.BytheYear9WritingandNumeracytestsin2017,however,MorleySHSstudentsdidmuchbetterthantheYear9studentsinallAustralianschoolsandsignificantlybetterthanYear9studentsinsimilarschools.BytheYear9Readingtestin2017,MorleySHSstudentshadimprovedtobeatthesamelevelasYear9studentsinsimilarschoolsandhadsignificantlynarrowedthegapincomparisontoYear9studentsinallschoolsinAustralia.

During2016,MorleySHSembarkedonaprocessofcollectingfeedbackfromthesignificantgroupsthatcomprisedoutcommunity–students,staffandparents/guardians.Thisfeedbackwascollectedinseveralways:

•Studentswereasked,intheirTutegroups,tocompleteanexercisewheretheyidentified‘WhatwasworkingWell’atMorleySHSandwhatwouldbe’EvenBetterIf’.

•Staffcompletedasimilarexerciseduringseveralwholeschoolstaffmeetings

•Parentsweresurveyed(online)aboutdifferentaspectsoftheschool,beingaskedtorank/ratetheperformanceoftheschoolinarangeofareas(identifiedbybothstaffandstudentsassignificant).
