What is Motivation?

Intrinsic Motivation

Motivation to perform a task for a reward from outside.

Grades, money, positive feedback.

Extrinsic Motivation

Is motivation to perform a task for its own sake.

The reward is the task itself.

The role of motivation in Second Language Learning• Fulfill school/University requirements.• Function and compete effectively in the

global economy of today and the future.• Increase job opportunities and salary

potential.• Develop intercultural sensitivity,

increase global understanding• Improve vocabulary and language

How to increase motivation among

students in learning• Motivating students into the lesson: giving remarks to interest students.

• Using co-operative rather than competitive goals : When students have to work together as teams, increase their motivation to learn and win.

• Enhancing learner autonomy and freedom of choice.

• Enhancing students’ feeling of competence, self-

efficacy and self-esteem by providing aid and

scaffolding for takes so they can perform them by

valuing their of contribution to class.

Conclusion Motivation is a key factor which builds interest to learn a second language. There are several reasons why people become motivated. We as teachers can motivate the students through variety of creative teaching strategies . By using these strategies, we can create an excellent environment to enhance motivation in second language teaching.
