Come and enjoy the wonderful activities we have planned at Mount Joy that highlight the amazing things that take place each and every day. The evening will be run by student leaders, and will be supported through the generosity of the School
Council and the volunteerism of staff and community members!
On this special evening, there will be family sports games, arts performances, active games, face painting, prizes and much more!
We look forward to seeing you!
Pettigrew
As we embark upon our last few weeks of school, we are thrilled about the amazing events and learning opportunities that are taking place at Mount Joy Public School. In the last month we have had a variety of field
trips, intramural games, classes experimenting with filming and our state of the art projectors were used for our second annual Mount Joy International Film Festival (MJIFF)! It was a pleasure to have so many of you join us for a fun filled night on April 28th. The evening was an exciting opportunity to share the fun of film making with our Mount Joy families. We hope that you had a chance to walk the red carpet while having your picture taken by the MJIFF’s paparazzi against our MJIFF backdrop. We are thankful for all the families that came out to support the junior and intermediate students’ creations. From storyboards to polished films, it was so evident how the use of technology can be a creative medium for students to express themselves. We are so proud of all the submissions that were featured throughout the night. We hope to make the MJIFF an annual event at Mount Joy Public School. Sincerely,
Mr. Pettigrew & Mrs. Di Stefano Di Stefano

While writing, focus on one area to work on at a time. For example, have your child focus on getting all their thoughts down on paper first. It may be tempting to correct their spelling but try not to worry about that for the moment. Often, when a child slows down for too long to try to figure out how to spell a word, their thoughts may be lost. They can always go back and correct spelling mistakes after. Once they have completed a piece of writing, have your child read their writing out loud to you. This is a great way for them to revise their work when they hear themselves read. Traditional Chinese: ELL提示 _ 寫作的時候,在一個時間努力去專注於一個領域。例如,讓您的孩子先專注自己所有的想法並寫在紙上。這時

CLIPS, or Critical Learning Instructional Paths Supports, offers links to a variety of multi-‐grade supports in math for students and their parents. For example, “Gap Closing ePractice” delivers opportunities for junior and intermediate students to build their understanding of mathematical concepts by accessing interactive activities. “Home Connections” and “Partnering with your Teen in Mathematics Grades 7-‐12” provides parental resources for home use. Also included on this site are connections to the mathies interactive website for our younger learners. Focusing on fundamental mathematical notions, this site has something for everyone! Library News Mount Joy is very fortunate to have author visits happening over the next few weeks. On May 4th Werner Zimmerman, author and illustrator, will be entertaining the kindergarten to Grade 2 classes with his sharing of his most popular works. For our older students in Grades 3 to 8, Eric Walters will be visiting to engage these classes with his vast array of highly esteemed books. These author visits are wonderful ways to enhance literacy for students. Your support by having your child to bring in their money for this exciting opportunity is most appreciated!

Our SUPERFOOD initiative here at Mount Joy inspired awareness of healthy eating to students and parents. Teachers are noticing their students packing nutritious foods in the pursuit of a SUPERFOOD day being called for their chance to be entered in the raffle. We celebrate this success at our monthly Mount Joy Spirit Assemblies with healthy, free snacks for all students. So far students have enjoyed; apples, clementines and cucumbers! We would like to recognize and thank our community partner and local grocery store, Metro, for their contribution of the GREEN APPLE GRANT that allows us to purchase these snacks for our students. The Healthy School’s Team would like to thank all families that participated in the Pause to Play campaign on April 18-‐22. This week students and their families were encouraged to “turn off their screens” and spend more time being active. Students received a certificate acknowledging their participation in the event. With the weather warming up, May is the perfect month to focus on being active. Students can bike, skateboard and ride a scooter to school. Remember to wear proper safety equipment and ensure it fits! It’s your head … use it! Head injuries are the leading cause of serious injury and death to kids on wheels. Wearing a properly fitted, certified helmet can reduce risk of serious head injury by 85 per cent. Children and youth (under 18) are required by law to wear a helmet when bicycling. Helmets must fit properly in order to protect your child in the event of a fall or collision. The helmet should cover the top of your child’s head and sit 2 finger widths above their eyebrows. A helmet that is too big will not provide proper protection. Adjust the side straps so they form a V-‐shape under their ears. Only 1 finger should fit between your child’s chin and the fastened straps. Shake, Shake, Shake: Have your child shake their head up and down and side to side to make sure the helmet is snug. To provide proper protection, helmets must have a safety standard label (e.g. CSA, CPSC, Snell B-‐95, N-‐94, ASTM 1447, F-‐1898). Remember to check regularly for cracks, dents, and broken or frayed straps. Be a good role model – always wear a helmet when you are cycling, boarding or blading.
