Multiplying and Dividing Scientific

Notation

You can multiply and divide with two or more sets of scientific

notation the same way you multiply and divide regular numbers

REMEMBER: You can rearrange multiplication and division!

Multiplication in Scientific Notation(2.5 * 104)(1.3 * 105)

This can be rewritten as:2.5 * 104 * 1.3 * 105 (Because between parenthesis is multiplication.)

That can be rewritten as:2.5 * 1.3 * 104 * 105 (Because multiplication can be rearranged.)

2.5 * 1.3 * 104 * 105

Multiplication in Scientific Notation

Now multiply the whole numbers and combine the powers of 10.

3.25* 109

Answers: 1. 3.24 * 108

2. 1.2 * 1013 (you get 12 * 1012 but that isn’t in scientific notation so you move the decimal once more to the left and add one more to the exponent)

3. 1.184 * 106

(you get 11.84 * 105 but that isn’t in scientific notation so you move the decimal once more to the left and add one more to the exponent)

Now solve the first fraction and simplify the second.
