Dear Parents/Carers,
We are back into full swing this week with all classes
running, the Clubhouse happening for the Year 2
students and the learning support classes in the
Primary happening as well. Did you know that we
provide support to fifty students in both Infants and
Primary each week? Our Kindergarten classes have
a teacher and a School Learning Support Officer
(SLSO) in with them until at least lunchtime each day.
Our other Infants classes are supported by students
working with either SLSOs or with teachers in The
Clubhouse at least four days per week. In the Primary
we have an extra English and Maths class running for
Years 3-6 and reading classes run by Mrs Stockley,
Mr Beale and Mrs Waters. On top of this we also
have SLSOs that come in and support students in
the classroom. Most of this support is over and
above our allowance from the Department of
Education and paid for out of school budget. We
do this because it shows in our results that all
students require support to grow their skills and that
teachers and SLSOs are the most effective way to
do this in the classroom. We also have Mrs Thornett
teaching students in Years 2-6 how to play the
guitar each week and the most amazing sports
coaches around. We are so lucky to have the
depth and breadth of talent amongst our teaching
team! They are also a very dedicated bunch, going
over and above their required duties each day. I am
proud to be a Mulligrubber!
In the spirit of keeping our skills as educators up to
date, our Executive Team started their week with a
day of training. We worked with Susan from the
Centre for Educational Statistics and Evaluation
looking at how we can best use the information we
collect about students’ learning to ensure that every
student grows a year of skills for each year of
learning. The day was interesting and we discovered
some interesting things about how our students’
results compare to similar schools to ours. What

came out of the day was new tools and skills to share
with each of our teaching teams that will allow us to
study how we teach and how we can address the
learning needs of each student throughout K-6. The
message from our first look at the information is that we
have good results across all academic areas and that
these results are as good as, and often better than similar
schools. It is always nice to begin the week on a positive
note!
Next week will be very hectic. It is Education Week and
the theme for the week is “Today’s schools creating
tomorrow’s world”. We will celebrate the week with a
variety of activities including a Classroom Open Day and
an SRC Mini Fair on Thursday. The Open Classrooms will
begin at 12:30pm and will be followed by the Fair. Please
put this in your calendars and join us on Thursday
9/8/2018. More information will come home later this
week.
We have 48 students competing at the District Athletics
Carnival in Cowra on Friday 10/8/2018. Mr Ryan and Mrs
Beale are busy organising notes and entries. Please keep
your eye out for these notes in your child’s bag if they are
an athlete.
Have a great week!
Regards,
Catherine Briggs
Sport Report
I hope you all had a safe and active holiday. Firstly the
District Athletics Carnival is coming up on the Friday of
Week 3. I hope all our athletes are having a positive lead
up and are well prepared for the day. As mentioned in
previous newsletters students are encouraged to practise
outside of school to have the best chance to progress to
Western.
Secondly, congratulations to our Todd Woodbridge Cup
team who have progressed to the next round of the
competition. I have been told they were fantastic on the
day and left nothing on the court. Fortunately for us, we
have acquired the help of tennis coach Helen Garrett for
some time this term to help with those players’ skills and
better our chances of progressing through to the next
stages. Good luck to those involved.
Finally, I would like to thank Cowra Community Recycling
Centre for their generous donation of three large wheelie
bins to help transport and store our sporting equipment.
We appreciate your support.
CANTEEN NEWS
Unfortunately, due to supply issues, the
canteen will no longer be stocking the 350ml
spring water.
The canteen is running a “Fresh for Kids” eat
fresh and win promotion from Monday 6th
August - 21 September. Every purchase of
fresh fruit or salad earns 1 sticker. When the
child has 2 stickers on their entry form they
return it to the canteen and are rewarded with
trading cards and go into the major prize draw.
This is run by Sydney Markets and is NSW wide.
1st Prize - Roar & Snore at Taronga Zoo
2nd Prize - Garmin Vivofit Jr
3rd - Faber Castell Packs
And loads more
Trish is asking all our Stage 3
families if they would be able to donate some
items to the canteen. All donations are greatly
appreciated by Trish and go a long way to
keeping our canteen prices down.
Items such as aluminium foil, paper lunch
bags, paper serviettes and plastic forks will
help greatly.
Thank you so
much, Trish

Cowra Library is hosting a free visit by bestselling Australian children’s author Morris Gleitzman at Cowra
Civic Centre, Darling Street, on Thursday 13th September at 10.30am.
Morris wrote his first children’s novel in 1985. His moving and humorous style has endeared him to chil-dren and adults alike, and he is now one of Australia’s most successful authors, both internationally and at
home.
The majority of Morris’ accolades are for his hugely popular children’s books. One of the first was Two Weeks With the Queen an international bestseller which was also adapted into a play by Mary Morris. The play had many successful seasons in Australia and was then produced at the National Theatre in London
in 1995 directed by Alan Ayckbourn, and also in South Africa, Canada, Japan and the USA.
All Morris’ other books have been shortlisted for or have won numerous children’s book prizes here and
overseas.
Morris is now the Australian Children’s Laureate and will dedicate the next two years to advocating for the
importance of stories and everything stories can offer. His theme is “Stories Create Our Future”.
Morris explains, “Young people need stories more than ever. Stories to delight, stories to beguile, stories to inspire, stories to move deeply. And through these experiences, stories that equip young readers to
embrace an often dark and uncertain world with optimism, resolve and creativity.”
