Murree, a famous hill station, is just a 50 kilometers towards

North-East of Islamabad, at the gate of Great

Himalayan Range. Murree is widely regarded as queen of hills

because of its majestic scenery. The turnover of tourists during

summer season reaches in millions. The pleasant weather of

Murree is one of the biggest attractions.

The city comprises four main areas. The height of these areas

increases gradually. Murree City is situated at an altitude of

7,500 feet ( 2,286 meters) above sea level. Other places part

of Murree are Patriata, Kuldana and Gharial.

Brief Histor y

According to oral traditions, Murree derives its name from Marrhi, a word in local

language, which means a ridge (a long area at hilltop). Another reference is about a

word imported from Turkish language, Mera, which means a meadow or pasture.

There is tremendous influence of Turkish language on the local language of the area.

The people used to spend most part of the year in the valleys and used top of the

hills as pastures or fields to grow seasonal crops.

It is believed that over the period of centuries, Turkish word Mera might have

become Mari, the spellings used by the British first time after their arrival in the area

in 1846. It was in 1875 that present spellings, Murree were adopted by the British.

There is no record indicating that the whole territory known as Murree today, had the

same name before the British occupation of the area in 1846. During Afghan rule as

well as Sikh rule, the area was referred with the name of the tribe inhabiting there. It

was only after transfer of the hill tract, including Murree, from Hazara district to

Rawalpindi district in 1850 that Tehsil Murree was created.
