Director’s NotesMy daughter Larkin saw Avenue Q in New York during its Broadway
run and told me I had to see it. The premise of watching Sesame Street for adults who face real world challenges with incisive ironic wit was too tempting to ignore. When the performance rights became available, the theatre faculty graciously allowed me the opportunity to direct this 2004 winner of the three major Tony awards for a musical. The emotional scope of Avenue Q ranges from ribald to poignant as we follow the threads of characters’ interrelationships and progressions through self imposed barriers to those characters’ sense of worth. These threads weave a tapestry of hilarity supported by a deceptively simple score. The harmonies, key and time signatures are complex but the music, presented in a made-for-children format, is quite engaging.
The above would be challenging as is, but Avenue Q adds the element of puppetry in a manner unique in modern musicals. The puppet operator actors are not hidden but are part of the environment of the play. The intricacies inherent to the play demand the performers imbue the puppets with personality and intention. This requires the puppet operator actors to maintain a neutrality that gives focus to the puppets while they execute choreography and general navigation of the stage.
The student designers have faced challenges of delivering naive statements that inform deep, comically ironic appreciation for the challenges of human experience in a modern urban environment. I am extremely proud of these students’ work as well as the student artisans and technicians who have realized the reality that is Avenue Q. The scope of the effort to conceive and realize the puppets for this production has been a joy to watch and for which I am quite grateful.
As this is my final production as full time faculty at SOU, I would be remiss if I did not express my gratitude to my colleagues, faculty and staff, who over the twenty-six years of my time here have been a source of inspiration and support. Your commitment to our students’ growth is laudable.
Avenue Q is a smart, irreverent play that has great reverence for the challenges human relationships present us. Issues of race, gender equity, social responsibility and intimate domesticity are met with unflinching frankness. Within the bawdy blunt nature of the play is the genesis of its disarming comedy. Please accept our invitation to participate in the world of Avenue Q.

About the PlayJeff Whitty was born on September 30, 1971, in the town of Coos
Bay, Oregon. He studied at the University of Oregon as an undergrad until 1993, then attended NYU’s graduate acting program where he received his master’s degree. He has written such plays as The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler (which was performed at OSF in 2008), The Plank Project, Balls, The Hiding Place, and Suicide Weather. He also wrote the libretto for the musicals Tales of the City and Bring It On: The Musical. Whitty still acts at times, such as in productions of The Beard of Avon, Freedomland, Shortbus, and Lisa Picard is Famous. Most recently, in 2012, Whitty took part in a short run of The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler in New York, where he played the title role of Hedda Gabler.
Whitty is without a doubt most well known for penning the book for the musical Avenue Q, along with co-creators Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx who composed the music and lyrics. Whitty received the Tony for Best Book of a Musical in 2004 for Avenue Q. Avenue Q opened on Broadway in 2003, and has since had two national tours, as well as runs in the West End, Las Vegas, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries. Sweden was the first country to translate the original version of the musical back in 2007.
About the PuppetsThis production of Avenue Q features three different types of puppets,
each either originally devised or developed by Jim Henson. First are the hand-rod puppets, in which the puppeteer operates the puppet’s head with their dominant hand and then moves the puppet’s arms about through the use of attached rods with their lesser dominant hand. This sometimes can be a two person job, depending on how the arms need to move. Some well-known examples are Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Elmo, and Grover.
Second are the live-hand puppets, where the puppeteer uses their dominant hand to control the head, like with the hand-rod puppets, while the other hand is slipped into the puppet’s hand like a glove. This puppet almost always requires a secondary puppeteer in order to operate the second hand. Some well-known examples are Fozzie Bear, Ernie, and Cookie Monster.
Lastly is the full-bodied puppet, which is a hybrid of costume and puppet. The puppeteer uses their dominant hand inside the costume to operate the puppet’s head, while using physical movements from their entire body in order to act as the puppet’s body. Some well-known examples are Sweetums, Thog, Snuffleupagus, and Big Bird.

About the PlayThe Illusion was originally penned by Pierre Corneille in 1636. Corneille
was born in Roanne, France, on June 6, 1606. As he aged, he studied law and began work as a lawyer, though he proved unsuccessful in the field.
Early on in his law career, Corneille wrote his first play, Mélite, which became a hit. He soon moved to Paris and became one of the most critically acclaimed French playwrights of his time. Corneille went on to write over thirty plays, and is now often referred to as “the founder of French tragedy.”
His play Le Cid was a tragicomedy that brought about the attention of the French Academy, and established the Academy as the arbiter of French culture. The Academy scrutinized Le Cid for breaking too many dramatic rules, such as including too many events (such as war) within the requisite twenty-four hour period of a play and for breaking decorum by portraying a daughter marrying the hero despite the fact that he killed her father in a duel earlier in the show. These comments caused Corneille to withdraw from society for a short while, as he was known to not take criticism well.
The same year Le Cid premiered, in 1636, Cornielle also wrote the comedy L’Illusion Comique (The Illusion), his eighth play. Corneille’s last play was Suréna in 1674. He died in 1684, after he had been retired from playwriting for ten years.
Anthony Robert Kushner, better known as Tony Kushner, was born on July 16, 1956, in Manhattan, New York. Kushner majored in Medieval Studies as an undergrad at Columbia University, but then was accepted into the acting program at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York.
He has since written seven original plays, the most acclaimed being the two part play Angels in America, which was turned into an HBO miniseries in 2003. Kushner has written three screenplays as well in his career: Munich, Wrestling with Angels, and Lincoln.
Kushner has won over twenty awards, including the Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Play for both parts of Angels in America, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Angels in America: Millennium Approaches. He’s also been given the prestige of the Evening Standard Award, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, the National Foundation of Jewish Cultural Achievement Award, and several other high honors.
In 1988, Kushner took Corneille’s play and adapted it into English. The Illusion is not the only time Kushner’s adapted an older play into modern language. He also adapted Ansky’s The Dybbuk in 1997, and Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan in 1997 and Mother Courage and Her Children in 2006.
