Profiles are automatically created for a user when they register or log into developerWorks. A user must have a profile to be able to utilize My developerWorks.
A user’s profile can contain both private and public information. A user can choose to keep mandatory information private except: Full name, and display name

Associate blogs, bookmarks, activities, files and wikis with a group
Search capabilities – search specific groups, all groups or your own groups
Message board
• Communicate with group members
• Highlight important messages by pinning them to the top of the message board
Members’ widget to manage group members’ privileges
Highlight important bookmarks
Groups
Groups are micro communities that can be public or private. They have a lot of valuable features for allowing users to create an enriching collaborative environment.

Available roles for group members are owner and member:
• Any owner can email the entire group*
• Any owner can invite non-registered members to join*
• Any owner can invite other dW users to join*
• Any owner can change a member’s role
• Any member can access blogs, bookmarks, activities, files or wikis associated with the group
Groups
Option Description
Private: Hidden and restricted to a particular set of users.
This group is not accessed via search or other group listings.
It is only recommended for groups that are sharing confidential content or have a business critical need for a gated community.
Open: Publicly available and anyone can join and contribute.
A public group has a low barrier to entry, encouraging participation.
Public groups are a great marketing and communication vehicle to the external IT professional audience.
* Varies based on the group’s access level.

Activities• Use for all "mini projects" that require you to assign tasks, to do's, discussions therein and/or file-sharing
Blogs• Use to post an announcement, share some news or sharing static documentation
Files• Use to share a file (or updated version thereof), not related to an Activity
Wikis• Use to collaboratively create or publish a document that is referenced (and updated) frequently
Bookmarks• Use to share important or commonly utilized URLs
Mail Group• If all else fails, group owners can mail the entire group by utilizing the “Mail Group” functionality. When
doing so, always refer to materials that exists on your group to facilitate communication.
