MARANG, TERENGGANU• Marang has an area of 666 km². • The district's topography consists of the South China Sea Coast, Peat swamps, hills and plains. • The sub-districts (Malay: mukim) of Rusila, Pulau Kerengga and Merchang lie on the coast

with sandy plains gradually giving way to hills in the interior. • The Jerong sub-district is mainly hilly.• The sub-districts of Bukit Payong and Alor Limbat consist of rolling plains and peat swamps. • The district's population of 84,938 (2000 census) is 97.2% rural and

predominantly Malays (97.2%) while the Chinese are the biggest ethnic minority (2.6%).

Project Characteristics and Results

The project site is located on a 76-hectare plot of land in Mukim

Merchang, Marang District, Terengganu, made available by

the State Government of Terengganu, Malaysia.

WASTE

Responsibility of Majlis Daerah Marang (MDM)

• Comprised of providing stationary waste storage container at waste collection site

• Collecting the solid waste approximately 3 times a week

• Waste transportation to the dumpsite for waste disposal

• Compactor vehicles are used to collect the waste

Conventional method waste generation>>waste storage >> collection >> transportation >> disposal

The solid wastehousehold waste, commercial waste, institution waste, industrial waste and construction waste.

RECYCLING

Nowadays, consciously or not we have been facing the very critical problems

where the capacity of landfills are more limited.

MDM also provide a drawing contest and design recycling bins, a collaborative

programs and also giving the recycling banners and pamphlets to all schools in

Marang’s area.

Majlis Daerah Marang (MDM) take the action to do the recycling campaign. We can see the recycling bins were placed in public area and also in residential area.

Also not forgetting in school area.

EMPLOYMENT

Due to Marang is located in areas with fertile land and nearby coastal areas, the majority of the population in Marang are worked as fishermen, farmers, labour and the other villages work.

However, there are also other employment like teacher, businessman, contractor and others. But in some area the major employment of them are fisherman and farmer.

Express bus terminal is located in Marang Town, that is at Jalan Marang-Kuantan to facilitate passengers wishing to go to Kuala Lumpur, Melaka,

Johor, and Kuantan in using the services.
