Early Days

Hailing From Agricultural Family in Gujrat’s Saurashtra region,Tulsi and his three younger brothers decided to do something else instead of going in their families cold storage business.

Tanti is B’com from Rajkots Saurashtra University and simultaneously pursued diploma in engineering.

In 1980 He started a Polyster yarn business in Surat ;due to electricity problems in 1990’s he bought two turbines from Danish Manufacturers vestas, for his business and realized its huge potential.

Path towards Success

In 1995 Tulsi and his three brothers Vinod,Girish, Jitendra

began with Suzlon Energy in Pune by selling some family property.

• The Tanti’s shopped around for technology in Europe but no one was willing to give it without an equity stake.

• Finally,Sudwind a small german company agreed to give them ten turbines.

• Tanti convinced IPCL a petrochemicals company that had been supplying raw materials for its yarn business,to sign up as suzlons first customer.Suzlon completed IPCL’s 3.5 megawatt project using sudwinds turbines within 3months deadline.

Opportunist

Sudwind went bankrupt in late 1990. and Tanti seized the opportunity by acquiring its R&D division.

Instead of moving to India,Tulsi hired former Sudwind employees and set up a R&D laboratory in northern Germany in city of Rostock,here existing designed were fine tuned .

Similarly Tanti Managed to acquire a Dutch blade manufacturer.

Rise Up

In 1999,state of Maharashtra passed a law that allowed companies to claim the cost of installing wind turbines as a tax deduction.Tanti had made it by 2002 sales at suzlon was $131 million.

In 2004 Suzlon set up a plant in Pondicherry,with more than 1200 workers,many with german expertise but paid in Indian salaries.Local production conditions enabled suzlon to boast 14% profit margin where as the standard Industry is 8%.

In 2005 Suzlon raised $340 million from initial public offering,which made Tanti’s family in the realm of subcontinents ultrarich.

Tanti is recipient of prestigious Canada India Foundation(CIF) Chanchlani Global Indian Award(2009)

Tanti was named Champion of the earth by UNEP United Nations Environment Programme for his Entrepreneurial Vision in combating climate change.

Rajiv Gandhi Award 2007 for most successful Industrialist in India.

“Ernst and Young Entrpreneur of the year 2006” by Ernst and Young.

Business Leadership award 2002 by Solar Energy Society of India.
