Effective writing Improving readability
Use short sentencesLimit your sentences to 15–20 words
One idea per sentence
Use active voiceMore simple, direct, and easier to read
ACS Style Guide: “Use the active voice when it is less wordy and more direct than the passive”. (3rd ed., pg. 42)
Effective writing
Readers focus at the end of the sentence to determine what is important.
1. You deserve a raise, but the budget is tight.
Which sentence suggests that you will get a raise?
2. The budget is tight, but you deserve a raise.

Sentence structure
Effective writing
The budget is tight, but you deserve a raise. Your salary
will increase at the beginning of next year.Stress position Topic position
The topic position introduces the idea of the current sentence
The stress position also introduces the topic of the next sentence

Currently, Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric materials are mainly fabricated by unidirectional solidification and powder metallurgy (typically, hot pressing) techniques. Although the thermoelectric performance of unidirectionally solidified materials is excellent, their mechanical strength is not sufficient. By contrast, the hot-pressed materials have high mechanical strength, unfortunately, their thermoelectric properties are lower than those of the unidirectionally solidified materials. Moreover, both preparation techniques result in high fabrication costs because of low product yield during the cutting process for forming net-shaped thermoelectric modules.

Nature’s guide to authors:
Nature is an international journal covering all the sciences. Contributions should therefore be written clearly and simply so that they are accessible to readers in other disciplines and to readers for whom English is not their first language.

Two-dimensional layered semiconducting chalcogenides (such as MoS2) have attracted attention due to their having an intrinsically high carrier mobility, mechanical flexibility, and a finite bandgap. However, improvements for MoS2 transistors have been hampered by the presence of a Schottky barrier…
However, conventional thin-film materials limit the use of such thin-film transistors in flexible backplane-circuitry due to their fragility and relatively low mobility.

In this research, we investigated the high-temperature electrical behavior of a MoS2 transistor with a high Schottky barrier…High temperature leads to a larger thermionic emission that transports electrons over the energy barrier.

…we found the μm to be limited by thermionic emission at high operation temperature due to the high Schottky barrier at the MoS2-Ti/Au metal junction. In this regard, a high-performance 2D multilayer MoS2 transistor having a zero or slightly negative Schottky barrier can be realized. Furthermore, observing the high temperature electrical behavior is a good method for determining whether a device is an ohmically-contacted or a large-Schottky-barrier device.
