American Basketball League and National
Basketball League were the first attempts at basketball leagues.
The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded in 1946.
Baltimore Bullets won the first ABL Title. Minneapolis Lakers won the first NBL Title. Philadelphia Warriors won the first BAA Title.
Before the Merger
On August 3rd, 1949 the NBL agreed to merge with the
BAA, thus creating the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Started with only 17 franchises, a year later downsized to 11 until 1953.
1954, the NBA reached its all time low with only 8 teams consisting of the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Royals/Kings, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, and Nationals/76ers.
1954 - To encourage shooting the NBA introduced a 24 second shot clock.

games (41 home & 41 away). Each team faces each other four times within
their division. Each team plays six of the teams from the
other two divisions in its conference four times, and the remaining four teams three times.
Finally, each team plays all the teams in the other conference twice apiece.
NBA Season
The 161-day lockout began on July 1, 2011, It
delayed the start of the 2011–12 regular season from November 1 to December 25, and it reduced the regular season from 82 to 66 games.
Reason was the division of revenue and the structure of the salary cap.
During the lockout, teams could not trade, sign or contact players, and players could not access NBA team facilities, trainers or staffs.
Ended on December 8, 2011
