NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY
PROGRAM (NREP)
The 1st Philippine Green Jobs Conference
SMX Convention Center
August 15-16, 2011
• Geothermal Resource – 1,200 MW
• Hydropower - 10,500 MW
• Wind resources – 76,600 MW
• Micro-hydro – untapped vast potential
• Solar Energy – Average potential 5kWh/m2/day
• Ocean energy - 170,000 MW
• Biomass (bagasse - 235.7 MW, rice husk – 360 MW)
RE RESOURCES
Energy Sector Objectives RE Goals RE Policies and Strategies
Adoption of sustainable energy development strategies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels
Ensure sufficient, stable, secure, accessible and reasonably-priced energy supply
Cleaner and efficient energy utilization
Private-Public Partnerships (PPP)
Increase RE-based capacity by 100% in 2030
Improve the Philippines’ ranking as second largest geothermal producer
Be number one wind energy producer in SEA
Expand contribution of biomass, solar and ocean
Diversify energy mix in favor of indigenous RE resources/technologies
Wide-scale use of RE as alternative fuels
Encourage private investments through market-based incentives
Establish responsive market mechanisms for RE-generated power
RE POLICY FRAMEWORK
• 100% INCREASE RE-BASED CAPACITY BY 2030 – thru enhancement of policies and programs, establishment of market-driven RE industry
• Republic Act No. 9513 (R. A. 9513) or the Renewable
Energy Act of 2008 establishes necessary infrastructure
and mechanisms to attain our RE Goals
• Section 27 (b) of the law and Section 31 (a) of the
Implementing Rules and Regulations - mandate the DOE,
in consultation with its stakeholders, to formulate and
facilitate the implementation of NREP
