Distance 4.3 miles (7 km) or 5.9 miles(9.5 km) with optional extension.

Height Gain 131 ft (40 m) or 810 ft (247 m)with optional extension. Fairly level.

Terrain Mixture of grass path, stony track,rail path and tarmac road.

Time 2.75 hours with extension.

How to get there Ravenscar is 3 miles eastof the A171 between Whitby and Scarborough.Buses from Scarborough (Route 16) Mondayto Friday.

10 This walk can now be extendedby walking down the track passingthe Coastal Centre along theCleveland Way. Drop down thistrack for 0.6 mile (1 km), turningleft as you join the main trackfurther down.

11 Take the right turn on thepermissive path taking you to thePeak Alum Works which is ownedand managed by the NationalTrust.

12 You can return by rejoining thetrack and following it through thegolf course to return to the CoastalCentre.

1 From the National Trust CoastalCentre follow the main road for 100metres, then turn left towards thesea at the wooden Cleveland Wayfinger post.

2 At the cliff edge turn rightcontinuing along the coastalCleveland Way.

3 Continue beyond the oldCoastguard lookout for anotherkilometre.

4 Turn right at the stile and footpathsign and walk along the field edge.

5 Turn left at the minor road (WarDyke Lane).

6 Leave the road, turning right ontothe bridleway.

7 Just before the railway arch turnright and head up the slope to jointhe old railway line.

8 Turn right and follow the oldrailway track back towardsRavenscar.

9 Drop off the old railway line intoStation Square then follow thepavement back to the CoastalCentre.

Ravenscar – Ravenscar’s claimto fame is as the town thatnever was. In 1895, propertydevelopers bought the landwith the intention of setting upa big holiday resort. Only a fewhomes, along with the roadsand the sewer system, werebuilt before the developerswent bust. These can all beseen today

Whitby-Scarborough disusedrailway – The old railway linewas opened in 1885 and carriedholidaymakers and daytrippersto popular places such asRobin Hood’s Bay. At Ravenscarthe line went into a tunnel asthe owner of the Raven HallHotel, Mr Hammond, wouldnot allow a visible line acrosshis land! The line closed in 1965and is now a popular route forwalkers and cyclists.

Radar Stations – At point 3 youwill see the best example of aWorld War II Radar Station onthe North Yorkshire coast. Builtin 1941, the station enabledoperators to see enemy craftapproaching that wereotherwise invisible to thenaked eye.

Peak Alum Works – The 1.6 mileextension to this route allowsyou to visit the site of theformer Peak Alum Works. NorthYorkshire is considered hometo the world’s first chemicalindustry and alum was used tofix dye in materials. The site atRavenscar lasted from 1640 to1862 when cheaper syntheticmaterials were found thatcould do the same job. Thereare numerous interpretationboards on site which fullyexplain its importance.
