Where are they?• Today 1% of the U.S. population are

Native American• They represent more than 1/2 of the

nation’s culture• There are over 500 tribes, each has its

own language and tradition• The Navajos or the Diné Nation is the

largest.

What are the names of other tribes?

• Can you pronounce…. NAVAJO OGLALA….SIOUX….CHEROKEE……

• BLACKFEET………...FORT APACHE…….ROSEBUD SIOUX……?

• Let’s have a look at one of these tribes

The Navajo Tribe• In its language it means “planted fields”• It’s also known as Diné• You can visit them in Arizona, New

Mexico,Utah and Colerado• They still live there on their own

Reservation• They are also U.S. citizens

Politics!!!!???• There is a chief, chosen by a

tribunal.• His work is very hard as he works

like a negotiator, not like a King.• He has to make everyone agree• The chief and the tribal council are

elected by the people

Language• What do Native Americans speak?• Everyone speaks English but

nearly 150,000 speak the native Navajo language too.

• It’s very hard, it was used during World War 2 as a code maker and breaker.

What about the children?

• They go to school,play and help at home!• They like hunting and fishing• In the past, more work, less play• They had toys: dolls, other games• They loved races, archery and riding

WHERE DO THEY LIVE?• Nowadays, they live in houses, flats

and apartments• Before they lived in HOGANS• These are Earth Houses which are

dome shaped with the door facing East• HOGANS are used for Religious and

Cultural events

they wore head bands• You had to earn your feathers• An eagle feather!• Make up• Pow Wows and Teepees

Transport• They walked everywhere!• Coastal tribes travelled by boat• When the Spanish came they

brought horses. Native Americans loved horses

• They used dogs and drag sled

animals• They used weapons to hunt!
