Nelson Mandela was born in Thembu, on July 18, 1918.On December 5, 2013 Nelson Mandela died at age 95.

In 1942 Mandela joins the African National Congress, South Africa's main campaigner for black equality.

In 1964 Mandela and six others were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Mandela walks out of prison, hand in hand with wife Winnie. Three years later on 15 October Mandela and de Klerk share Nobel Peace Prize.

The Prison YearsIn 1962 he was captured, and sentenced to five years in prison for leaving the country illegally and inciting a strike.He was finally released from prison in 1990 after over 27 years of unbroken incarceration.After the released he was elected president of the ANC in 1991.

The Nobel Prize

Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, sharing it with Frederik Willem de Klerk, President of South Africa at the time.
