In those early days when our Navy was first organized night communica-tion was made by lantern from the masthead. This was the only com-munication between ships at sea during through which many times newsfrom home was transmitted.

Quoting from the survey: 27.5%(or 62,168) Milwaukee homes haveradios needing repair or replace-ment ; 19.5% (or 44,000) homeshave vacuum cleaners needing re-
pair or replacement ; and the fig-ures for other applicances are:washing machines, 40,000 homes ;cooking ranges, 21,250 homes ;electric irons and toasters, eachabout 20,000 homes; refrigerators,18,000 homes and electric mixers,10,400 homes.
As 31.7% (71,600) Milwaukeehomes want a quick-freeze unit;44.2% want automatic washers and35% want electric ironers, it is ap-parent that prospects for this coun-try's radio and electrical applianceservice dealers are exceedinglybright. It's a great, profitable busi-to be in. So, repair to the hilt now,keep customers happy by treatingthem fairly, put profits into WarBonds and be prepared for thefast -approaching V -Day and thetime when radios and applianceswill again be delivered to dealersand consumers eagerly awaitingthem.
"B" Gas Rations For Servicers Now Okeh!
ON JUNE 19th the OPA amendedand "clarified" gasoline Ration Or-der 5C with the statement, "Pre-ferred mileage may not be grantedfor the repair of radio receivingsets unless the sets are used by oron behalf of a government or gov-ernment agency for inter -com-munication or f o r monitoringbroadcasts."
At first reading of this ROamendment we got the impressionthat Service Dealers were nowonly to b allowed "A" gasolinerations. We communicated withMr. Quentin W. Regestein, OPAWashington, D. C., who statedthat such an interpretation was in-correct. Mr. Regestein further ex-plained that "preferred mileage"means "C" rations, for which onlya few Service Dealers will qualify.However, the OPA authority de-clared that Service Dealers mayapply for and obtain "B" rationsunder the new amendment as it isrecognized by OPA that the main -

tenance and repair of home radiosets is a valuable adjunct to thewar effort.
Service Dealers in the Easternpart of the country are now eligi-ble for sufficient "B" coupons toallow them 325 miles of occupa-tional driving per month. ServiceDealers in the Midwest section areentitled to 475 miles of occupa-tional driving monthly and ServiceDealers located out West mayhave 400 miles of occupationaldriving monthly.
Many Ration Boards, confusedby the original Ration Order, havelong refused Radio Service Dealerssupplemental "B" rations on thegrounds that repairing homeradios meant repairing "entertain-ment devices" which of course wasnot the original intent of OPA.Now, at long last, the entire issueis clarified. Service Dealers, as wehave maintained from the outset

Plant -Broadcasting UnitA simplified low-cost unit for voice -

Pagingcalls may be sent over the system whilemusic is being played by means of anautomatic control which decreases themusic volume. Donley Heads New WestinghouseRadio Receiver Division
Walter Evans, Vice President incharge of Westinghouse radio activities,announces the appointment of HaroldB. Donley as manager of the Westing-house Radio Receiver Division. Thismarks the first time since 1928 thatWestinghouse will develop a completeline of home radio receivers which willinclude standard receiving sets and fre-quency modulation, with and withoutphonograph combinations, and home tel-evision equipment. These will be man-ufactured and marketed as soon aspossible.
Mr. Donley has been with Westing-house 22 years and was until recentlygeneral appliance manager for theWestinghouse Electric Supply Companyin New York City.

graphs are taken and developed in theespecially equipped Utah dark room.Thus, it is possible to make a microscopicinspection of the actual condition of themetal before other atmospheric changestake effect. Since metal surfaces exposedto salt -spray tests change rapidly aftertests are completed, it is necessary andpossible, by this photographic method,to determine and accurately record cor-rosion in metals.

Clock servicing is a "natural" extra money-maker forradio servicemen during war -time. These repair cus-tomers will be post-war radio and appliance buyers.
amination, Bartlett calls the house-hold and issues a verbal reminder.If the clock isn't in on the specifiedday the customer does not get the50c rate but may pay the regularshop charge which is somewhathigher.
In this way Bartlett does not goout on a limb as regards getting toohuge a number of clocks in for themonthly once-over. For good meas-ure, customers desiring the servicemust make their own pickups-nohouse calls are even remotely con-sidered.
Bartlett uses one full day weeklyto check the clocks in theatres, res-taurants, small factories and busi-
ness offices. Again this "commercialcheckup" is at a flat monthly rate of75c, the slightly higher figure beingjustified by the leg work involved.
Bartlett does not attempt to trainapprentices in the art of clock -repair-ing but he has hired a house wifewho accepts and disburses bothradios and clocks over the shopcounter.
It's this serviceman's consideredopinion that the repairing of elec-tric clocks is desirable from allstandpoints. But he will not repairany other form of electrical product.Clocks is clocks, and toasters, iron-ers, cleaners and the like he cannotundertake to service.

Radio Serviceman Bartlett, of Syra-cuse, New York, is concerned. Forto him an electric clock is a thingof beauty. Getting down to cases,Bartlett combines radio servicingwith electric clock repair. For atpresent the humble electric alarmclock is kingpin in the scheme ofgetting defense -workers to work ontime. And replacements are not al-ways available if the family time-piece goes on a spree.
Bartlett believes that electric clockservicing is a wartime field of en-deavor worth considering by thetypical radioman. There is no de-livery problem; clocks can be broughtinto the shop in person and pickedup by the customer in person. More-over, clocks present only half the re-placement situation that radios do.Clock parts are fairly plentiful ac-cording to this radio -clock repair-man.
Bartlett puts aside a certain sec-tion of each day for clock -servicing.He suggests it best to work for afew hours at the radio service benchthen spend an hour or two on clockrepair. The change in work relaxesthe radioman's mind and preventshim from going stale. Bartlett ad-vises that this procedure helps fromthe standpoint of customer satisfac-tion. All things being equal, they'llbear with and not criticize a service-man for delays in radio repairing ifthey respect him as a clock -repairerand depend upon him in his dualrapacity.

Bartlett recommends a monthly"inspection" of electric clocks at aflat inspection rate of 50c. For thisfee the clock is examined and minoradjustments made if necessary. Seri-ous repairs are charged fully forand are not included in the monthly"time -checking" fee.
In this way Bartlett can catch theflaws in electric clocks before theygenerate into serious propositions.Each customer has a certain dayeach month he or she is to bring allhousehold clocks into the shop. Inan average family some family mem-ber has a wristwatch so that thehouse isn't left timeless. The inspec-tion is completed in 24 hours flat un-less trouble really rears its ugly

Yes, probe anypoint-plate, screen, bias, a.v.c.,power line output, oscillator grid,power transformer secondary and allthe rest-and your answers willcome rolling right along; positivedc, negative dc, AC, motor -boating,negative oscillator grid voltage,audio speech or music, etc.
Of course, there are limitations.The Indicator will not show actualvoltage, but it will differentiate be-tween high, medium and low de volt-age (so you can tell plate or screenfrom cathode and grid) ; in fact, youcan go a step further and identifythe ac filament contacts-all withoutturning a knob or even changing apin plug.

cathode bias resistor (Re) is set tocause the indicator 6E5 tube to illu-minate 2/3 of its normal unbiasedshadow angle, with no input signalor external voltage applied. (SeeFig. 2)
Then the plate resistor (Re) isadjusted to cause the two edges ofthe illuminated portion of the indi-cator to contact each other withoutoverlapping, with a 6.3 -volt,cycle signal applied to the input.
After these two easy calibrationshave been made the interpretationsof various reflections are used to dif-ferentiate between AC (a -f) or dc,relative dc voltage values; contin-uous audio or interrupted audio.
The application of a negative devoltage will close the eye within arange of approximately -4 to -1000

volts. Voltages down to a half voltor less will be indicated, althoughthey may not be sufficient actuallyto close the eye.
Positive voltage applications up to1000 volts will reverse the deflection,causing the eye to open. We see herethat a quick, safe and reliable indi-'eation of polarity is obtainable evendown to the smallest potential whichwill produce a visible indication.
Examining Figure 1, you will notethat the resistor (Re) and the capaci-tor (Ce), in series, will serve as ameans of assuming a charge from anapplied de voltage. This charge willslowly leak off due to the high resist-ance discharging circuit through the10 megohm input resistor (Re),which with Ite remains to dischargeCe once the source of the appliedvoltage is disconnected. This dis-charge rate for either positive ornegative voltage will be in propor-tion to the applied voltage, thusshowing a slow return to the normalshadow angle when high voltage isapplied. The lower the voltage, then,the more rapid the return to normalwill be.
From the foregoing we have foundhow a negative voltage will causethe eye to close and how a positivevoltage will cause it to open morethan normal. If we then apply anAC or audio voltage composed ofalternate positive and negativepeaks, the indicator deflection shouldshow a swing in both directions.This is exactly what happens and theeye shows a partial illumination overits entire deflection area with anyvoltage from approximately 4 voltsr.m.s. to 1000 volts, r.m.s. The par-tial illumination is due to the "on"and "off" time of the a -c voltage

Deflection Sensitivity andDeflection Factor
It is convenient to express the gainof a given amplifier by use of theterm "Deflection Sensitivity," whichis the ratio of the lineal deflectionproduced on the cathode-ray tubescreen to the r.m.s. or the direct cur-rent voltage required at the inputterminals to produce this deflection.Deflection Sensitivity, therefore,gives a convenient figure for com-parison of various types of oscillo-graphs irrespective of type ofcathode-ray tube used or the acceler-ating potential at which it is oper-ated. An increasingly desirable termused for the sake of convenience isthe term "Deflection Factor" whichis the reciprocal of the "sensitivity"ratio.
In general, the useful range of acathode-ray oscillograph extendsfrom zero frequency to several hun-dred megacycles, provided sufficientvoltage is available to allow a reason-able deflection with direct connectionto the cathode-ray tube deflectionplates. The amplifiers generally pro-vided will extend the useful voltage

range while at the same time will re-strict the useful frequency range.Since these two considerations tendto operate in opposite directions, afactor taking both into account isuseful in determining the perform-ance of a particular amplifier. Sucha factor is that obtained by takingthe product of the gain and the bandwidth. Consequently, it follows thatan amplifier with an extended highfrequency range will have a high de-flection factor or similarly a low de-flection sensitivity. Obviously, a largenumber of amplifying stages can beused to increase the gain to any de-sired value, providing noise disturb-ances can be kept to a satisfactoryminimum. For a device which pro-vides a visual indication, however,the requirements for stability arestringent. Unless sufficient stabilityis provided, accurate photographicrecords of cathode-ray tube indica-tions are not practical. As a result,the design of any oscillographic am-plifier is necessarily a compromise.
Square Wave ResponseSince a cathode-ray oscillograph is
primarily a test instrument, it shouldgive a true representation of the sig-nal under observation. In order toinvestigate the characteristics of anamplifier, it is common practice to ap-ply a square -wave signal, as shownin Figure 4, to the input circuit. Thesteep front of such a wave gives anindication of the high -frequency or"transient" response, and the flattop of the wave is an indication ofthe low frequency characteristics of
the amplifier, where the terms "high"and "low" frequency are relative tothe fundamental frequency of thesquare wave.Low Frequecy Distortion
If a low frequency square wavesignal is applied to the amplifier cir-cuit shown in Figure 5 between pointA and ground, and if the time con-stant of the grid circuit, C1R1, is toosmall, the signal at point B andtherefore at the output between pointC and ground, will appear as shownby the dotted line in Figure 4. Thissawtooth distortion is caused by thecharging and discharging of the ca-pacitance C1 through resistance R1during the flat top periods. This typeof low -frequency distortion racy ob-viously be reduced or eliminated bymaking the values of C1 and Si, suf-ficiently large so that the time con-stant of this part of the circuit be-comes very large. For very goodlow -frequency response, i.e., withthis type of distortion eliminated,the physical size of the capacitancerequired becomes unreasonable sincethe grid resistance must be limitedin value by the grid current charac-

teristics of the vacuum tube. It isalso desirable to keep the time con-stant of this part of the circuit assmall as possible since it will deter-mine the actual time required forthe amplifiet to recover from the ef-fects of a large transient pulse. Onemethod of obtaining good low -fre-quency response while still limitingthe size of Cl and R, is to employplate circuit compensation as shownin Figure 6. By the addition of theresistance -capacitance circuit R2 C2in the plate circuit of the amplifier asshown in Figure 6A, a voltage ap-pears at point D having a form asshown in Figure 6B. When this po-tential is added to that shown by thedotted line in Figure 4, the resultantis the original square wave, whichappears at point C in Figure 6A.This compensation must be carefullybalanced to provide the properamount of compensation to correct

Stray Circuit CapacitancesThe presence of stray circuit ca-
pacitance and the inter -electrode ca-pacitance of the vacuum tubes in theamplifier may be represented by thedotted shunt capacitance Co shownin Figure 7. These stray circuit ca-pacitances have the effect of decreas-ing the plate load impedance as thesignal frequency is increased. Highfrequencies are therefore attenuatedand the frequency response curvewill appear as shown by curve A ofFigure 8.
High Frequency Compensation
By the insertion of a series in-ductance L1 in the plate circuit of theamplifier, as shown in Figure 7, a re-actance increasing with frequency isadded to the vacuum tube plate loadto increase its impedance at highfrequencies and, consequently, to

maintain the amplifier gain at thesefrequencies. If this inductanceshould be increased in value abovethe optimum, a response curve simi-lar to curve C of Figure 8 will be ob-tained. This rising characteristic isobtained by resonance between theadded inductance L1 and the straycircuit capacitance Co. This type ofcharacteristic will accentuate the re-sponse to signal components over alimited frequency range, thus tend-ing to distort the signal under ob-servation. The effect is shown inFigure 9, illustrating a tendencytoward oscillation at the start ofeach half cycle of the square wave.The inductive compensation em-ployed should be so proportioned thatthe maximum increase in high -fre-quency response is obtained withoutintroducing additional distortion ofthe signal. An example of propercompensation is shown by curve Bof Figure 8, and a typical exampleof good wave response correspondingto this type of characteristic is illus-trated by Figure 10, for a squarewave of 100,000 square -wave cyclesper second. It will be noted thatusable deflections may be obtained atfrequencies higher than the high-frequency rating of the amplifiers,provided that the amplifier charac-teristics are taken into considerationand the resulting pattern properlyinterpreted.
D -C Signals
The resistance -capacitance coupledamplifiers ordinarily employed incathode-ray oscillographs will notpass direct current signals becauseof the inability of a capacitance topass direct current. Signals whichare composed of an alternating com-ponent superimposed upon a directcurrent are therefore establishedupon a new reference axis corre-sponding to the average level of thealternating component. Since meansare already available for the meas-

urement of the direct current com-ponent of the signal by meters anddirect connection to deflection plates,automatically removing the d -c com-ponent results in being able to obtainfull-scale deflection, or more, of thealternating component, thereby fa-cilitating fine detail study of thepattern.
Although nearly all oscillographsdo not include direct current ampli-fiers, special instruments have beenmade with them. This problem hasproved difficult to solve since directcurrent amplifiers are in general,rather unstable, the instability in-creasing with the gain. Improve-ments have been made in their de-sign in recent years, but they are,not yet in widespread use. The uselof carrier current amplifiers intaining a high gain for direct cur-.rent use has been suggested, and fu-`ture developments may include suchamplifiers.

Noise
Noise is another factor to be con-sidered in amplifier design. Noiseincludes such component factors asactual noise produced by controls,microphonics, and residual hum. Itshould be remembered that an oscillo-graph provides a visual indicationand noise, as such, is not apparentexcept as a distortion of the patternunder observation. Consequently,care is exercised in the selection ofgain controls, vacuum tube types andother components to be used. Thisparticular consideration is becomingmore important since the state of theart is indicating a trend towardhigher accelerating potentials andmore sensitive instrument amplifiersto extend the range of usefulness.
Z -Axis Amplifiers
Separate amplifiers are usuallyprovided for Z-axis or intensitymodulation of the cathode-ray beam.The considerations of the design of

these amplifiers are, in general, dif-ferent from those employed for de-flection. The output voltage require-ments are considerably less severe,while the frequency range usually ex-tends to a higher upper limit. Sincethese conditions are generally true,the design of an amplifier is con-siderably simplified, even though anextended frequency range is desired.The lowered output voltage require-ment for complete modulation of thecathode-ray tube beam allows the useof low plate impedance in the finalstage of this amplifier for extendedhigh -frequency response. Since, ingeneral, the source of signal foroperation of this amplifier is an ex-ternal signal generator, the inputsensitivity need not be too great,thus simplifying the design of thisamplifier still further by requiringfewer amplifying stages. One desir-able feature which may be incorpo-rated is a means for reversing thepolarity of the modulating signal toallow selection at will of either a re-duction or an increase in the inten-sity of the beam.
Uses
One of the principal uses of the Z-axis amplifier is to provide a meansfor impressing a timing signal uponthe pattern. The timing signal forthis purpose is supplied desirably inthe form of sharp pulses of shortduration and necessarily higher fre-quency or rate than the signal un-der observation in order to increasethe accuracy with which the time in-terval between certain events can bedetermined and in order to preventelimination of large section of thetrace. Although the linear time -base provided is very nearly linearin time, it cannot be dependedupon for highly accurate determina-tions. Therefore, use of the modua-tion amplifier for timing purposes isrecommended.
In some cases this amplifierhandles the signal used for elimina-tion of the return trace or flybackof the time -base to prevent confusionof the pattern.
AttenuatorsSince the oscillograph is a measur-
ing instrument, the power drawnfrom the circuit under test should bea minimum. The input circuits musthave provision also for attenuationof the signal to a value which may be handled by the input of the firstvacuum tube without distortion oroverload. This provision requires ahigh impedance, low capacitance,voltage divider placed across the in-put terminals of the oscillograph.The simplest method of obtainingsuch a voltage divider would be touse a high -resistance potentiometerin the grid circuit of the first vacuumtube. The use of such an attenuatorhowever, is subject to certain limi-
tations, mainly extreme frequencydiscrimination at intermediate set-tings. As shown in Figure 11, thedistributed capacitances C1 and C2produce a voltage division at thehigher frequencies. This voltage di-vision is essentially constant and in-dependent of the setting of the po-tentiometer arm. Thus, as the posi-tion of the potentiometer arm ischanged, the relative voltage divisionacross the sections of the potentiome-ter and capacitances will differ, pro-ducing serious frequency discrimi-nation. Although this frequency dis-crimination may be by using alow -resistance potentiometer, t h eloading upon the circuit under testwill be excessive. A solution of thedifficulty is to provide an input at-tenuator with fixed steps and adjust-able capacitance elements as illus-trated in Figure 12. This schemewill permit individual adjustment foreach attenuation ratio, maintaininguniform voltage division over a widefrequency range. Obviously, thiscannot be used as the only attenua-tor, since to cover a wide voltagerange and still maintain useful at-tenuation ratios, a large number ofsteps would be required. Conse-quently, an additional method of at-tenuation will be required for fineadjustment. Such a method is avail-able by the use of a cathode followerstage, providing a low impedancecathode output suitable for use witha continuous attenuator, or gain con-.trol.
One type of circuit, which involvesa cathode -follower stage, and whichwill allow a wider range of input sig-nal than conventional amplifiers isshown in Figure 13. This circuitwill, however, have a definite fre-quency limitation, but it is a definiteimprovement over other previoussystems. For the widest possible fre-quency range without frequency dis-crimination, the circuit of Figure 14will be used. With R1 and R2 bothlow in value, the circuit capacitanceswill be ineffectual even in the mega-cycle region. C1 is used as a block-ing capacitance in both cases to re-move the direct current from the con-trol R2. Both of these circuits whenused in conjunction with the fixed -step attenuator permit an extremelywide range of voltage input withoutfrequency discrimination.
Positioning CircuitsThe cathode -follower circuit illus-
trated in Figure 13 may also be usedfor obtaining a means of providing apositioning voltage for cases wherethe deflection amplifier is directlyconnected to the deflecting plates ofthe tube. Such a circuit is illustratedin Figure 15, as well as a method forconnecting the amplifier to the deflec-tion plates, and still operating thedeflection plates at or near groundpotential.

appliances is not so simple. LastOctober some high officials in Washing-ton were optimistic about refrigeratorproduction starting in the second quar-ter of this year. They talked of a yearlyrate of 900,000 to 1,000,000 refriger-ators. Since that time, the projectionhas been pushed back to the 3rd or4th quarter. Some leaders in govern-ment and industry believe that it willbe 1945 before we get under way.
Approximately the same situationexists on washers and other major ap-pliances-just last week one of the offi-cials in the Consumers' Durable GoodsDivision of the WPB refused to evenestimate when washer productionwould start. He would only state thatthere now are no definite plans to pro-duce washers at any time soon.
Of course, this outlook could changeovernight-depending upon war de-velopments.
Radio Production OutlookThe Army and Navy radio equip-
ment requirements for 1944 areeven larger than in 1943. Production
80% from January toNovember of 1943, but Major GeneralClay recently issued a statement thatsignal equipment must be expanded in1944. Despite enormous volume atCrosley in 1943, they still have unfilledorders for more than a year's produc-tion in war material of which a sub-stantial portion is signal equipment.
We find no one in authority who willventure a civilian radio productionforecast for 1944, other than the pos-sibility of making some small nearlystandardized sets for export to Cen-tral and South America and to recon-quered areas.
New Models
It is rather clearly indicated thatthe first refrigerator production willbe from the tools and dies last used.The only changes will probably be ma-terial substitutions where critical ma-terials were used in the last produc-tion.
This is a sensible program. We donot believe that the valuable time ofengineers and toolmakers should be di-verted to new model refrigerators dur-ing the emergency. Partieularly sobecause the last models which the in-dustry produced were very efficient andattractive refrigerators. The samerules will probably apply on other ma-jor appliances including washers,ranges, etc.

models produced will have a normalyear model changes. The really newmodels probably won't appear until thefinal phases of the war have beenterminated for a good many months.
This model program is sound, sales -wise. Millions of families need anelectric refrigerator right now. Theyneed one from the very first produc-tion. Then later, sales stimulationwill be provided by sharply -improvedmodels. And still later, the new de-signs should be ready when a real salesimpetus is required. In the meantime,every one who buys will have secureda sound value, a beautiful and an effi-cient refrigerator.
Many authorities believe that ap-proximately the same program will befollowed in radio. That the first pro-duction will be from the last tools and
dies but that the quality will be im-proved because of the things whichhave been learned in the production ofthe exacting specifications of warradios. Improved manufacturing proc-esses and more rigid quality controlwill result in better quality and greateruniformity.
Undoubtedly, the first models pro-duced will have new designs in woodcabinets.
What will come later will be influ-enced by the findings of the RadioTechnical Planning Board which hasbeen organized at the suggestion ofChairman Fly of the Federal Commun-ications Commission. The findings ofRTPB and the later decisions of theCommission will have an importantbearing on both Frequency Modulationand Television.
"Voice letters" haveclicked. Sales of blanksand equipment plusmaintenance will addto dealers' incomes as"voice writing" be-comes commonplace forbusiness and personalcorrespondence too.

In the early days of the war, therewas a great deal of discussion inand out of Washington on the revolu-tionary changes which would occur atwar end in our system of distribution.Thinking on this subject has changedduring the past six months and theconsensus of opinion now seems to haverationalized.
We at Crowley believe that the pres-ent system of distribution in the radioand appliance industry is sound. Wedo not believe that a radical change isrequired-we do not think it would bein the public interest. We went onrecord to this effect on July 26, 1943.Since that time many others have donelikewise.
The costs of wholesaling and retail-ing in radio and appliances have been

materially reduced during the past tenyears. This has been possible becauseof improved products that give betterperformance and less service-becauseof greater efficiencies and because ofhighly expanded volume.
A further amplification of those samefactors will provide greater efficienciesand lowered costs in the future. Thatis progress. I'm sure none of us,manufacturers, distributors or retailerswant to attempt to stand in the wayof progress.
As these things are accomplished-when the costs are reduced-then themargins of distribution can be reducedstill maintaining an adequate and fairmargin of profit for the services ren-dered. When these things become factnot theory, then another great forwardstep will have been made by our in-dustry. A further contribution willhave been made to the American sys-tem.
We believe in the factory-to-knde-pendent - distributor -to - dealer - type ofdistribution.
Future of the Radio and ApplianceIndustry
We are urging our distributorsdealers to prepare for big volume in-creases in the post war market. Whydo we think the market will be solarge? Let's take a quick look at someof the facts which are now available.
Many of us often lose sight of theestablished fact that our country isgrowing rapidly. In 1940, there weresix million more persons employed, orseeking employment in this countrythan in 1929. In 1940, 46 million em-ployed persons produced more goodsand services than in any previous year.In 1941, with shorter working hours,the productivity was 25% greater thanin 1929. After the war, there will be
more than 57 million workers availableto produce and to consume. Millionsof these will want and will buy newradios and appliances.
We all know about the great de-ferred demand, and people will havethe money to buy with.
Individuals in this country had neversaved as much as 10 billion dollars inone year prior to 1941. In 1942, theysaved more than 25 billion dollars. Ap-proximately 20 billion went into sav-ings in currency, bank deposits andGovernment Bonds alone.
The savings in 1943 exceeded 30 bil-lions and if the war lasts through1944 the savings will be even larger.In the past three years, savings in cur-rency, bank deposits and GovernmentBonds have increased more than 60billion dollars. They will probably bein excess of 100 billion prior to warend.
And, during this period, installmentsales indebtedness has been reducedfrom some 9 billion dollars to an esti-mated less than 2 billion. All other in-debtedness has likewise been sharplyreduced.
So today-Americans owe less andhave bundles of cash.
The Domestic and Foreign Branch,WPB Radio Division, recently estimateda postwar market of 17,000,000 to 21,-000,000 radio receivers.
Prominent television authorities arenow forecasting that television salesin important figures will start withinone to two years after the end of theJapanese war. F. M. sales forecastsare large also.
Certainly, all of this is not an im-possibility if the RTPB studies andconclusions materialize as rapidly as isnow forecast.
The U. S. Chamber of Commerce"Third Progress Report" of a consumersurvey to measure Post War BuyingInterest for the Period ImmediatelyFollowing War's End indicates twothings :
1. That people have the money tobuy-and that
2. They expect to buy in large vol-ume.
The survey shows that even morepeople were saving money in 1943 thanin 1942. Sixty-one percent say theyare now able to save. Thirty-four per-cent say they are saving over 10% oftheir income. Actually, more than 61%are saving because 76% are buyingWar Bonds and Stamps.
Eighty-four percent are investing inone or more of the following: WarBonds, life insurance, savings accounts,mortgage retirement or other invest-ments.
Forty percent of the people feel theyare better off than a year ago. And

55% have confidence in the future.They think there will be "plenty ofjobs" for everybody the first year afterthe war.
Sixty-four percent of the Nation's35 million families name one or morepurchases they would make within sixmonths, if the war ended tomorrow.
What will they buy?3,675,000 intend to buy new automo-
biles2,625,000 intend to buy mechanical
refrigerators2,100,000 intend to buy washing ma-
chines1,645,000 intend to buy stoves1,400,000 intend to buy vacuum
cleaners.People plan to buy these large quan-
tities of appliances in six months.In addition to the appliances which
were sold in volume prior to the war,there will be a greatly increased busi-ness in many that were just getting agood start.
The frozen food cabinet is a goodexample. Only a small quantity hasbeen produced and sold but the demandwhen production is permitted has beenestimated in very large figures.
We know that big meat packers arelaying plans to put the old-fashionedmeat industry on a production basis.They forecast savings to the consumerof 20% to 30% on 60 pound frozenmeat assortments. The large foodpackers plan to get into the frozenfood business with both feet. Theyforecast better quality and lower pricesfor frozen foods than for canned orfresh fruits and vegetables.
When these programs materialize, thepurchase of a frozen food cabinet willhave an appeal from an economic aswell as a convenience standpoint. Thefood savings will result from bulk pur-

chases so a larger compartment willbe required than can be contained ina two -temperature refrigerator.
The room cooler business was big-ger in conversation than in fact priorto the war. It was just beginning tocome into its own in 1941. Post-warforecasts vary from 100,000 to 250,000per year. But our guess is that whenwe have the right unit at the rightprice, that sales might well be one mil-lion per year.
There are many other untapped mar-kets including kitchen cabinets, gar-bage disposal units, dishwashers andso on.
So we firmly believe that the outlookfor the radio and appliance manufac-turer, distributor and dealer is a bril-liant one.
It will be easy for you to accuratelydetermine whether or not there will bea big radio and appliance market inyour community. Ask the first 100people who come into your store, "Doyou plan to buy a radio, television, F.M. radio, refrigerator, frozen foodcabinet, washer, ironer, table appli-ances, dishwasher, kitchen cabinet, etc.when production is resumed."
My guess is that if you do this youwill have the start of a fine prospectlist. Your best prospect will be thecustomer to whom you have given sat-isfactory service in the past. We knowa great deal, from firsthand experience,about how difficult radio and applianceservice problems are today. We havebeen operating three distributor serv-ice departments.
We know how difficult it is to getand to train and to replace servicemen. How hard it is to get replace-ment parts. But many distributors anddealers are actually making friendstoday through their service department.
There are servicing opportunities inthe 35,000 radio -equipped planes anti-cipated for the first post-war year.
The personnel is courteous. When theycan't give customary prompt service,a good and polite explanation is made.Customers are being created for prod-ucts when they are again available.
During the past year or two, manyprominent dealers have lost their identi-ty as radio and appliance dealers.They haven't had this merchandise todisplay or sell. Their stores today looklike anything but a radio and appli-ance store. This was a natural se-quence to the closing of production.
But I think it is not now too earlyfor dealers to start identifying theirstores as radio and appliance dealersas soon as products are available. Ap-propriate signs in the windows, in thestore, direct mail and prominent dis-play in your newspaper and radio ad-vertising will some day pay big divi-dends.
Certainly it's not too early to startan up-to-date prospect list.
During the past sixty days, I'vetalked with many distributors anddealers. There seems to be two schoolsof thought on post-war selling.
One school says-"There is such aterrific pent-up demand for radios andappliances-there are billions of dol-lars in War Bonds and other savingsthat are waiting to rush into the mar-ket as soon as production starts again.So we think there will be a 'SellersMarket' for several years after manu-facture starts. Why should we spendmoney on advertising and salesmenwhen the demand will be bigger thanthe supply? We are going to wait un-til supply is greater than the demandbefore we start to build a sales organi-zation."
The other school says-"We thinkthere is going to be a bigger radio andappliance market after the war thanhas ever existed before. But, we alsoknow that the production capacity ofthe radio and appliance industry willbe increased many fold when war pro-duction stops. Practically every menu -

It is reported that a chain depart-ment store in Chicago is "merchandis-ing" the present frozen condition indomestic appliances by setting up fix -it departments. There they take ordersto repair worn gimmicks, from toasters,waffle irons, washers, refrigerators,etc., to radios. The work is farmed outto various independent servicing organ-izations.
Though many radio services dealersare working against time, often intothe small hours, to keep up with thedemand for repairs, there may be somewho are in a position to benefit con-siderably from this potential source ofadditional income.
What happened in Chicago can wellbe duplicated in any community, largeor small. Say a dealer works out anarrangement with a local departmentstore, or furniture store, to handle re-pair work on certain appliances inaddition to radios. It might be doneon a percentage or flat "trade fee"basis. The service dealer might billthe department store monthly, allow -

ing 20% or so to the store, which willcollect the individual customer items.Or there may be a flat "spiff" to thestore for every job turned in, dependingon the amount of billing.
The announcement about the Chicagoset-up says nothing about having thedealer's name displayed in the fix -itdepartments. But that is almost atrade obligation, anyway. There's nodoubt that the department stores willhave recourse to the service dealer inthe case of complaints. The work will,of course, carry a guarantee, with theusual provisos regarding parts andlabor. Where a proposition like thatdoes work out, the stores can put acrown on their efforts to cater to thepublic by stressing the fact that theyare employing reliable service dealerswho join them in their guarantees.And while dealers may never learn theidentity of the people whose appliancesthey are repairing, they can amass avast amount of extra good will in theircommunities-a priceless ingredient for
business planning-plusadditional cash income.

Proctor Toaster Repair HintThe utmost care in packing must be
taken when returning a model No. 1430for repair. The bakelite base is fragileand must be protected against breakagein shipment. The toaster should bepacked in its original carton with suffi-cient inner packing to prevent thetoaster from rattling in the carton.This original carton should in turn bepacked in a larger carton with ex-celsior packed tightly around the bot-tom of the carton to protect the baseof the toaster.
If these instructions are not followedthe risk is very great that the toasterwill be received with a broken base.

PAPER CAPACITORS AsMICA CAPACITOR SUBSTITUTES*
AS A MEANS of meeting theshortage of mica capacitors,various capacitors of other
types have been proposed as alter-nates. Included among the suggestedsubstitutes are the impregnatedpaper capacitors of both tubular andmolded-bakelite construction.
Paper capacitors of several typeshave been tested by the capacitormanufacturers to determine theirsuitability as mica condenser substi-tutes. Among the electrical charac-teristics investigated are the Q,power factor, insulation resistance,temperature coefficient of capaci-tance, and working voltages. In de-termining the suitability of substi-tute capacitors, it has been necessaryto keep in mind the particular appli-cations in electrical circuits in whichmica condensers have distinguishedthemselves, and to respect size re-,quirements already set by mica capa-citor dimensions.
TypesBakelite -molded paper condensers
usually resemble standard moldedmica units in shape; and their sizesare not much different from those ofmica capacitors. The capacitor sec-tions may be of "stacked" construc-tion or may be "wound" and flat-tened. The molded paper condensermay be impregnated with oil or wax.
Special tubular paper capacitorsfor mica substitution resemble stand-ard tubular units except for theirreduced size. These condensers aregenerally oil -impregnated and areprovided with cylindrical metal con-tainers, with or without an outer in-sulating sleeve.

Substitute paper condensers of bothtypes cover a wide range of capaci-tance values. While it is desirableto replace as many of the mica typesas possible, it is particularly import-ant that alternates be provided forthe larger condenser value unitswhich employ the greatest amountof mica. Prominent in the latterclass are units with capacitance rat-
ings of 0.002 mfd., 0.005 mfd., and0.01 mfd., which are employed invarious coupling, blocking, and by-passing positions in radio and elec-tronic circuits.

Electrical CharacteristicsThe electrical characteristics of
substitute paper condensers dependupon the material employed as adielectric (at least as far as dielec-tric constant is concerned), and theproperties of the oil or wax impreg-nant.
In general, a low Q value (10 to 30at 10 Mc.) may be expected. Powerfactor will be approximately 0.5%at 1000 cps. Insulation resistance willbe of the order of 8000 to 10,000
. megohms at 500 volts dc. Residualinductance will depend upon the typeof construction and lead length, andis usually of such magnitude that theresonant frequency of the 0.01 mfd.

Beyond the resonant frequency,the condenser is generally consid-ered as unsuitable for by-passing inhigh -frequency circuits. However,this is not entirely true. Statingthe matter in engineering terms, thereactance of the capacitor does be-come inductive at frequencies higherthan the resonant point, but an in-ductive reactance can be as efficienta by-pass path as a capacitive re-actance, as long as the reactive pathis considerably lower in ohmage atthe operating frequency than is theby-passed path. This will be trueexcept when phase angle of the feed-back voltage is of importance. Thus,for instance, an inductive reactanceof 1 ohm or thereabouts might by-pass effectively a tube cathode re-sistor of 500 ohms. At a certainnigh frequency beyond resonance,the inductive reactance will becomeequal to the resistance of the by-passed component and its by-passingability, accordingly, will be de-stroyed.
Temperature coefficient of capa-citance for the 0.01 mfd metal -en-cased tubular substitute paper unitwill be positive and of a low value.Temperature coefficients of both

Capacitance tolerances of substi-tute paper units up to, but not in-cluding 0.01 mfd capacitance, are-20 to +50%; for units of 0.01mfd capacitance, the tolerance is-10 to +40 %.
Common working voltages for thesubstitute paper condenser are from300 to 800 volts dc for capacitancevalues between 0.001 mfd. and 0.01mfd. Some of the types have alreadygiven good account of themselves onlife tests conducted by the manufac-turers as well as their customers.
Ability of the substitute units towithstand water immersion accord-ing to any standard specifications isa function of the condenser casing,rather than of the type of element orimpregnant. This is important inmoist locations.
ApplicationsIt has been common practice to
employ mica condensers in certaincritical positions in r.f. circuitswhere equivalent series resistanceof the unit must be of a low magni-tude. One such application is the

This is a Victor national special re-lease. Artur Rubinstein heard someVilla -Lobos compositions and soughtout the composer in Brazil. Villa -Lo-bos shows a first-hand knowledge ofhis country's folk music and primitiverhythms. No wonder he cast aside ac-cepted forms, showing unusual original-ity in his compositions, which includeorchestral and solo instrumental worksas well as choral music.
In spite of the title, "The Child'sFamily" is not children's music, but israther a series of tone sketches abouta doll family which a child accumu-lates. Artur Rubinstein's performanceof these seemingly light pieces is amarvel of piano sorcery evoked withhis flying fingers and insinuatingphrasing.

In this vein, our front coverthis month shows a railroad en-gineer and fireman using a Motor-ola 2 -way radiotelephone whichoperates between the train dis-patcher's office and the locomo-tive cab. The apparatus is in-tended to facilitate the safer han-dling of passenger trains and tre-mendously speed up freights con-veying war materials in trainyards and on long hauls.
There is further promise forex -service radio specialists in theannouncement by the GeneralElectric Company's ElectronicsDepartment and the taxi indus-try's Cab Research Bureau, Inc.,that a "ridey-talkie" version ofthe war's walkie-talkies will be in-stalled right after the war in taxi-cabs, beginning with Cleveland'sfleets. Benefits claimed are:establishing contact with any cab
instantly anywhere; eliminatingall present unattended call boxesand their direct lines to cab head-quarters; reducing "dead" mile-age and thus conserving gasoline,rubber and extending the life ofthe cab itself.
When it comes, radio service-men may have this stationary ap-paratus to cope with, in the be-ginning : one main and two sup-plementary transmitters, eachhaving four channels with 100cabs assigned to each channel. Inaddition there will be thousandsof units of cab equipment to serv-ice.
These are just a few of manynew applications of radio -in -indus-try which will provide men re-leased from military service withthe post-war job opportunitiesmany of them are seeking.

I am forced to turn away five to eightsmall sets daily for lack of 50L6, 12SA7,12SK7, 25L6, and other types of tubeswhich cannot be secured from any Bostonwholesaler, only in lots of two or three amonth, provided you stand in with thejobber and give him plenty of business.We keep getting tips about some blackmarket source of tubes at list, or 50c to$1.50 above list. The same applies to wirewound resistors, power transformers, etc.,and lately a serious shortage exists in evenlow voltage electrolytic condensers whichare needed in many small set servicingjobs.
Lately Boston and New York jobbersare circularizing the trade with lists ofadapters for using one tube in place ofanother. These combinations use a 7A8in place of a 12SA7, a 47 to replace a 45,and so forth, when no one has any, eitherwholesale or retail, and the substitute tubessuch as 7A8, 7B7, 47, etc., are as difficultto obtain as the tubes they are supposedto replace. The public knows nothingabout these conditions, only reading dailypaper bla-bla about "Eight Million RadioTubes To Be Released," and when theyare most of the numbers are slow movingtypes that have been in the jobbers' ware-houses for the past two or three years suchas types 26, 27, and other numbers thathardly anyone wants.
Probably the above is what you haveheard a thousand times in the past yearbut it is the problem the serviceman facestoday and something should be done to geta few scarce tubes into the hands of allthe services who need them so badly atthis time.

More Batteries, Says WPBRadio dealers and other merchants
who handle farm radio batteries aretold by WPB's Director Stanley B.Adams that an increase in battery pro-ducti9n is expected this fall. Overseasneed for batteries have increased enor-mously, but WPB is trying also to stepup civilian production because lack ofbatteries may prevent people from tun-ing in on important radio messages andparticipating in vital war programs.

The resistor R4comprises the plate load for the de-flection amplifier V2, while R5 and Rereturned to a high negative potentialprovide direct current voltage divi-sion to cause point P to be at zeropotential with respect to ground. Ca-pacitance C1 is provided to reduce theattentuation of the alternating cur-rent signal component. Since R5 isnecessarily high in value, the timeconstant of C1 and R5 will not atten-uate the low frequencies appreciably.The chief advantage of direct cur-rent positioning is that of eliminat-ing the lag usually associated withalternating c u r r en t positioning,when good low frequency response ismaintained.
Alternating current position, as il-lustrated in Figure 16, is used forapplications where the lag is not seri-ous, or when direct current connec-tion is not desirable.
The above mentioned lag or "elec-trical backlash" is caused by thetime required for the capacitance C1and C2 to establish a steady directcurrent potential at plates D1 and D2after position control potentiometersR1 and R2 have been adjusted tosome new value. This time is neces-sitated by the large time constantsC1R3 and C2R4. High values of re-sistance are necessary at R3 and R4to maintain a high input impedanceat the deflection plates and to insuregood low frequency response in thedeflection plate coupling circuit.

For high speed testing the oldscrew driver method can be revived,but this time the brutal part of it isovercome because of the high re-sistance input of the electronic indi-cator. You can quickly check for thepresence of voltages where they be-long or for the presence of undesiredvoltages, hum or signals where theydo not belong.
In practical application it is easyto detect a leaky coupling capacitorwith an internal leakage resistancearound 1 or 2 megohms by observ-ing polarity indications while prob-ing at the grid side of the capacitor.
After the above leakage test hasbeen made, a further check on coup-ling capacitors is a simple matter.By connecting a small capacitor, sayof about .002 infd. in series with theprobe the d.c. plate voltage will beblocked, permitting only A.C. or au-dio voltage to influence the Indica-tor. With this adaptation the samea.f. indication should be apparent atboth ends of the capacitor; if it isnot, the capacitor may be open orgrounded and consequently useless.
Should your problem involve inter-mittent output, the indicator asmodified above, can be used as a highimpedance monitor to test for theerratic action of a capacitor over aperiod of time sufficient to producesuch behavior. Once connections aremade for monitoring the signalthrough a suspicious part of any de-fective device it is not necessary totouch anything until the normalcourse of events have proven or dis-proven any questionable perform-ance. Thus the problem of contactshock -curing poor internal capacitorconnections is eliminated.

Many retailers are today makingcomplete plans for their post war radioand appliance departments. The en-larged department floor space plans arealready laid out. Merchandising pro-grams have been developed. Arrange-ments have been made for departmentheads who are to start work severalmonths in advance of the time produc-tion will begin. Tentative arrange-ments have been made with salesmen-and so on.
There will be a big normal marketfor post war products. But it can bemade bigger by creating a bigger de-mand. And that is what salesmen, ad-vertising and sales promotion can ac-complish.

Heretofore, mica con-densers have met this requirementwith no difficulty. However, the low -Q characteristic of the substitutepaper condenser renders that unittotally unsuitable for use in high -frequency tuned circuits.
Certain receiver circuits in whichautomatic volume control is incor-porated employ a fixed condenser inseries with the grounded end of theinductor of a tuned circuit, as shownin Figure 2. Here, as in the first

case, the fixed capacitor is effectivelyconnected in series with the coil andthe variable condenser and will re-duce the circuit selectivity unless thefixed unit possesses low equivalentseries resistance. Present substitutepaper condensers do not exhibit asufficiently high Q to replace micacapacitors in this application.

The paper units can be used, also,for by-passing in r.f. circuits oper-ating at frequencies up to the capa-citor resonant point, and as far be-yond as the ratio of reactance toby -passed -circuit resistance will per-mit. They are satisfactory for by-passing in audio -frequency circuits.
Figure 4 shows an ordinary super-heterodyne receiver circuit in whichpermissible positions for substitutepaper capacitors have been indicated.

In all six songs, ranging as they dothrough every emotion, the natural andartistic qualities of this American bari-tone's voice are coupled with excep-tionally fine diction. Each song is anentity, a miniature masterpiece of vocalartistry. . . . The man just loves tosing, and admits it: "I'm not happyunless I am about to sing, singing, orfinishing a sing." . . .
Bluebird 30-0826 is shared by CharlieBarnet and his Orchestra and AlvinoRey's group. Barnet, with the capableassistance of baritone Bob Carroll,plays "I'll Remember April," while Al -vino Rey and Yvonne King swingthrough the melody and lyrics of "Don'tTake Your Love From Me."
Barnet's band is augmented by a vio-lin section giving a smooth setting toCarroll's voice. The tune on the rec-ord flipover is tailor-made for the`young love' department, and Alvino andYvonne are their usual perfect matchin it.
Bluebird 34-0715 gives us Yank Ra-chell, blues -singing "Bye Bye Blues"and "Katy Lee Blues." Original blueswas 'shouted" rather than sung, andYank has clung to that first blues man-ner. The accompaniment is not somusical as it is rhythmical. Both sidesof this Bluebird Race record are tra-ditional blues in the twelve bar pattern,as originally played.
Sidelights on Plant BroadcastingPsychologists note that the music pro-
grams played for war workers is creatinga desire for classical music among peoplewho never heard the works of the mastersbefore. Various plants report employeesrequesting repeats of Beethoven, Bach, andBrahms. At one plant in the middle westan employee dropped a note in the requestbox asking the director to "play thatBronze Lullaby and Clair de Goon again."
Certain plants equipped with RCA in-ternal broadcasting systems report thatsoft, sweet music is played in the companyinfirmary waiting rooms to soothe nervouspatients. Nurses report that the musiccauses the patients to relax, thus aidingmedical diagnosis and treatment.
A wartime substitute for the "singingmessenger boy" has been devised by FredHomer, director of plant broadcasting atthe RCA Victor Camden plant. A gleeclub octet harmonizes "Happy Birthday"over the plant broadcasting system priorto announcing birthdays.
