Activities in JULY 2014
NETFISH’s outreach programmes during the month of July 2014 were comprised
of 186 regular awareness classes, 5 street play shows, 1 clean-up programme, 3 school
programmes and 2 other special programmes. The number of beneficiaries of regular
programmes was 5164 and that of special programmes was around 360. Apart from
these, a few meetings were organized with Fisheries officials as well as with stake
holder groups in some of the regions to discuss and solve issues related to hygiene and
conservation. Table 1 gives an overall picture of the different types of extension
programmes conducted during the month. The region wise details are given in the
subsequent sections.

The extension programmes in West Bengal included 23 regular awareness
classes, a mass boat cleanup programme at Deshapran Fishing harbour and Sankarpur
Fishing Harbour and two School children programmes at schools in coastal blocks of
Purba Medinipur district. On 10th July, a meeting was held with boat owners, Secretary,
Fishermen Association and NGO member at Raidighi Fishermen Association, Raidighi,
South 24 Parganas regarding registration of fishing boats with MPEDA and financial
assistance of MPEDA to the boat owners. On 17th July, a meeting was held at Digha

mohana, Digha, Purba Medinipur with the exporter’s agent regarding catch certificate
issue, entry of Log sheets etc. On 24th July, a meeting was held with Secretary, Kakdwip
Fishermen Association at Bhutbhutighat, Kakdwip regarding MPEDA’s subsidy scheme
and registration of fishing boats.

In Odisha, 25 regular programmes were organized at selected regions through
member NGOs. NETFISH awareness posters, leaflets and films were made use of during
the programmes. Instead of stipend money, cleaning materials, t-shirts etc. were
distributed among the participants. Certificates and prizes were distributed among
selected participants of pre-processing programmes to encourage them to follow
hygienic practices.

During July, 20 extension programmes were conducted at selected regions of the
state, which consisted of 15 regular programmes and 5 street plays. Hand gloves and
plastic sheets were supplied to the beneficiaries instead of stipend and NETFISH
documentary on Hygiene in Pre-processing units were shown to the participants. On 8th
a discussion was held with the President of Mechanized Boat Operators Welfare
Association, Visakhapatnam on the use of square meshed codends in trawl nets. On 16th
& 17th July the SCo coordinated with CITD training programmes on “EU standards in
fishing vessels and landing centers and their approval by competent authorities in
India” and “approval of Tuna long liners vessels and the catch storage facilities in fishing
vessels”. EIA, MPEDA and CIFT officials attended the programme in which
demonstrations were done in fishing vessels and fish landing areas of Visakhapatnam
fishing harbour. On 23rd July, a meeting was arranged in fishing harbour with stake

holders and Fisheries Department officers concerned to discuss regarding collection of
toll to carry out fishing harbour cleaning activities. On 26th the SCo attended the
meeting arranged by the AP Crab marketing Cooperative Society Limited at
Machilipatnam and informed about the export market value of crab and urged the
cooperative society to utilize MPEDA subsidy to construct the Chill fish handling center.
On 31st of the month, the SCo along with Fishery Development Officer met the Port
Conservator and Port Officer of Kakinada Ports and discussed on handing over the toll
money to the Fishing harbour management committee, Kakinada to support effective
regular cleaning activity of the harbour.

conducted along southern regions of Tamil Nadu. On 21st July an orientation
programme for fisher women on hygienic preparation of dryfish was organized at
Kovalam in association with Stella Maris Institute of Development Studies. On 8th July, a
meeting was held with Assistant Director, Chinnamuttom to discuss about harbour
renovation work. On 31st July, the SCo visited Vellapatti landing centre and discussed
with fishermen representatives on blue crab conservation initiatives.

NETFISH conducted 40 regular extension programmes during the month along
southern coastal regions of Kerala. A discussion was held with Matsyafed Officials at
their District Office, Ernakulam regarding dry fish units. Discussions were held with

authorities concerned regarding upgradation of Sakthikulangara & Cochin Fisheries
harbours. A meeting was arranged with AD, Fisheries at Neendakara to discuss about
illegal fishing practices existing in the region.

In Karnataka, 11 regular programmes and a special programme were conducted
during the month. Fish Farmers Day celebration was jointly organized at College of
Fisheries, Mangalore on 10th July 2014. Leaflets of NETFISH and schemes of MPEDA for
farmers and ornamental fish breeders were distributed to all the participants. A special
campaign for popularization of MPEDA schemes for fishers, especially the insulated ice
box scheme, was arranged at Bhatkal fishing harbour on 15th & 16th July. MPEDA
officials, member NGOs and representative of Ice Manufacturers also took part in the
campaign. Subsidy schemes of MPEDA for fishers were familiarized among the fishers
and the advantages of insulated fish boxes were explained to them. The SCo urged the
fishers to carry insulated ice boxes on board fishing vessel for better quality and longer
shelf life of their catch. Distribution of schemes in detail, application forms, fishing
vessel registration forms, list of approved firms for insulated ice boxes were done on the
spot. As a result of the campaign we received a few applications from the fishers which
were verified by the MPEDA officials and physical verification of fishing vessels was
done at Bhatkal and Alivekodi fish landing centres. Visit to fishermen societies were
done for the implementation of MPEDA schemes and distributed application forms,
scheme details etc. among the fishers.

NETFISH in Maharashtra conducted 26 regular extension awareness
programmes during the month. During Dry fish programmes, fishers have shown

interest to set up solar drying units to produce hygienic dry fish. Many fishermen
societies have given their letter of interest to NETFISH regarding this. In the
conservation programmes, awareness was given on conservation of Lobsters and
Pomfrets and a few fishers have shown interest in lobster culture and fattening. Also
they understood the need to stop catching juveniles of Pomfrets.

The extension programmes in Gujarat during the month included 20 regular
trainings and a special programme. The special programme was organized on 28th July
for the students of a school located near Veraval fishing harbour, to create awareness on
marine conservation. Around 50 students of VIIIth Standard took active participation in
the programme. The president and members of Bhidya Koli Samaj Boat Association also
attended the programme. NETFISH posters & documentary film were also shown in the
programme. On 4th of the month, the state coordinator visited office of Dept. of fisheries,
Veraval and appreciated their good effort on taking action against fishermen who did
fishing during ban period. Around 35 FV license were suspended by Dept. of fisheries.
On 5th July a discussion was held with the Officials of dept. of fisheries, Porbandar about
fishing ban and need for taking strict action against those violating the ban. On 8th July,
President of Boat Association, Veraval visited NETFISH SCo and discussed about
hygienic handling of Ice and the need for conveyer belt Ice Crushing machine or other
such kind of mechanism to avoid crushing ice on floor. On 22nd of the month the SCo
visited Dept. of fisheries office, Veraval and discussed on use of 40mm square mesh in
Trawl nets and fishing ban during monsoon season. On 31st July, a meeting was held
with the President of Veraval Kharwa Sanyukt Machhimar Boat Association and
discussed on stopping ice crushing on dirty floor and its solution.
