Introduction to Sensor Networks

Major concerns before deployment

Management protocol discussed:

SRM – Sensor Reliability Management

Architecture of SRM

Working of each module

Conclusion & Future work

References

WSN has many limitations such as:

Power (limited battery)

Storage (limited RAM or Flash memory)

Coverage (low power RF transmitter)

Reliability (correct data delivery)

Programs developed must take into account its hardware restrictions.

Overheads and awake state may kill the network very quickly.

WSN Management

SRM MANNA SNMP – Proxy SNMS

Based on hierarchical management architecture and policy-based paradigm.

Data reliability management framework

Allows network administrator to interact with the network by defining management policies.

Provides self control capability.

Can easily integrate with other management services through management policies.

Management tasks are distributed to all sensor nodes including cluster heads and base station.

Divided into three levels:

Node level

Cluster level

Base-station level

SRM framework includes four modules which are different for all levels.

Policy Specification

Policy Parser

Policy Distribution

Policy Framework Definition Language (PFDL) is used to define policies

IF <condition> THEN <action> SCOPE <scope> Where,

CONDITION is disjunctive normal form of expressions

ACTION is list of single action statements

SCOPE is sensor node where the policy is enforced.

▪ Scope could be LOCAL, CLUSTER or NETWORK

Similar to MIB

Stores network policies defined by Network Administrators.

In SRM, two policies are defined:

Data Reliability

Congestion Reliability

Function Mapping

Function Distribution

Function Mapping

Receives selected actions from DMM

Maintains function list for each action and maps set of functions to be executed

Function Scheduling

Distributes the assigned functions among the sensor nodes which executes the required actions practically.

Base Station is connected to GUI which is programmed in JAVA

Sensor nodes are equipped with SRM framework programmed in C Language

Action used: ADJUST_RETRANSMISSION_RATE Comparison between: e-ACK (capable of retransmitting 7 times)

no-ACK (no acknowledgements)

SRM with R=60% (where R is reqd. Reliability)

SRM with R=70%

SRM with R=90%

Figure: Simulation results (extracted from [1])

SRM provides reliability but nothing is FREE.

Management traffic increases with the reliability requirements.

SRM is designed for reliability but can be integrated with other management services.

Network Congestion Policies could be explored and improved in detail to improve system performance.

How decision making module handles the conflicts in management rules.

There is always a margin of improvement

What do you think about adaptive policies?
