skill set, and those who want to keep theirskillssharp.Ifindmyselfinthatsecondcategory.Earlyinmycareeras an editorial freelancer, I joined The Christian PEN and became amemberoftheChristianEditorCon-nection (CEC) with a certificationin nonfiction. Over the past threeyears, I’ve completed over 180 proj-ectsandstillthere’smuchtolearn.

Last year I wanted to get serious about my fiction editing and takeit to the next level. To that end, ItookJeanneLeach’sEditingFictionIclass,offeredbyThePENInstitute.

I was hooked, so I took her level II class.Jeanne’sflyershavebeenin-valuable for self-reference and for explainingconceptstoclients.Kris-ten Stieffel’s information was alsohelpful, especially her Elements of Fiction Editing Checklist (Kristen-Stieffel.com). So with great plea-sure, I took her Advanced FictionEditingclass.

With those three classes under mybelt,Ifeelconfidentenoughtotake two CEC fiction editing tests.Thankfully I passed them, and ear-lythisyearIgotmyfirstCECfictionreferral, a novel about the perse-cutionofChristians infirst-century

Rome—a great project to work on with my history and theology back-ground. In a one-on-one appoint-mentatthisyear’sPENCON,Kristingave me wonderful ideas for anoth-erfictionprojectIwasworkingon.

Whether you’re a beginning or seasoned editor, I’d encourage you to look at the upcoming classes at ThePENInstitute.Andtothosewhohavebeenediting foryears, thankyou for passing on your knowledge toothers.Myowngoalfortherestof this year is to learn the ins and outs of InDesign so I can create pro-fessional-looking interior layouts.What’s your goal?

As an editor, what do you specialize in? I specialize in substantive editing for longernovels, but I often point outpunctuation and spelling er-rorsas Igoalongtoo. Isimplycan’t bypass something that is incorrect.Also,I’veeditedsev-eral devotionals. I find this tobemygreatestjoy.Ioftenlearn

somethingfromthedevotions.I’vehadseveralpublishedthrough The Secret Place and The Upper Room, so I have someexperienceinwhatmakesagooddevotion. What training have you completed on your journey to becoming an editor? I’vetakensomeofTheChristianPen courses, I’ve attended severalwriting conferences,andI’vealwaysenjoyedtheEnglishlanguage.Inaddition,I study The Chicago Manual of Style and The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style.Substantiveediting,seeingthewhole picture, seems to be something that just comes naturally to me. I’ve always had a strict attention todetail,andIthinkthathelps. What are some of your favorite resources when ed-iting or writing?DefinitelytheCMOS.IhavetheonlinesubscriptionwhichmakesitsimpletolookupsomethingImightnotbeawareofortodoublechecksomething.Kathy Ide’s Proofreading Secrets of Best-Selling Authors is agreathelp,aswell.Inaddition,myconnectiontootherChristianPENeditorsandmymembershipwithAmericanChristianFictionWritershasexpandedmyknowledgeonsomany levels. It’s important tohave friendsandcon-tactswithinyourfield. What advice would you give to a beginning editor? Findyourstrengthsandstudytheactualrules.ToooftenI see new editors relying on what they think is correct, but many of us know that what we’re taught, or what is theaccepted“norm,” isnotalways correct.And thingschange frequently, so it’s important to keep up with the ever-changing language and rules. In addition, doublecheck your work, be willing to learn, and seek to be hum-ble.Andwrite.Aneditorneedstoknowwhatitmeanstowritewhatheorsheisediting.Youneedtoknowhowtheprocessworksandwhatmakesagoodstory. Do you participate in any organizations or groups other than the PEN? Yes, I’mamemberofACFW,andIserveontheboardof(andamthewebmistressandnews-letter“guru”for)St.DavidsChristianWriters’Conference.

How has God gifted you to succeed in this business? That’s a toughquestion.All ofmy “success”has comeaboutinthelastfiveyearsorso,butIdon’tfeellikeI’mquiteatthelevelGodwouldlikemetobe.I’mstilllearn-ing and growing as an editor and a writer, but He has opened doors and connected me to people, like those inthePEN,whohavehelpedmeestablishmybusiness.It seems whenever I say, “Help,” He is there with a solu-tion. What is your favorite Scripture and why? “My heart isstirredbyanoblethemeasIrecitemyversesfortheking;my tongue is the pen of a skillfulwriter.” (Psalm45:1)IcameacrossthisversewhileworkingfortheSt.Davidsconference.Theyusedtouseitastheir“motto,”and I thought it justspoketohowI feelaboutwriting.I’m recitingmy verses, what I write, for the king—forGod—and it is a noble theme, a noble cause.When Iedit,Iwanttheauthor’swordstoreflectwhattheywantto recite and thenoble cause theywrite about. That’swhyIloveeditingdevotions,becauseIcanrelatetothatauthor. But evenwith secular authors, I’ve found thatconnectiontosomethinggreater.Mostofthetimetheydon’twrite forselfishreasons.Ourvoice,ourtongues,arethepensofaskillfulwriter,writingdownversesfortheking.Howawesomeisthat? What’s one unique thing about you? My husband says Icaretoomuch.LOL! I trulycareabouteveryau-thor’swordsthatcomeacrossmydesk.Iknowhowhardit is to write, especially a full-length novel. It doesn’tcomeeasily to everyone.But I believeeveryonehas astory to tell, and I want them to be able to tell it in a way thatspeakstothemasses.Sometimesthisintensecaringgetsmeintrouble.Iinvestabittoomuchandgethurtsometimes.But Iwouldn’t have it anyotherway.Godgavemethisgift,andIintendtouseit. Sometimes, despite an editor’sbest efforts, amistake is print-

ed. Some people think, “Oh well,editors are human, after all.” Buttyposdohavealastingeffect.

At a minimum, a typo can smudgethereputationofthepub-lisher or website where it was pub-lished.Readersoftenwillnottrustthe credibility of a text if there are obvious typos. Such readers maynot buy products with typos, thus decreasing sales and profits. Ty-pos can also interfere with search engines that look for a string of specificcharacters.Ifawordismis-spelled, the text may not show in the results. This can be especiallydamagingtoanonlinepublication’s

readership.When typos do occur, it is im-

portant to explain them to con-cerned bosses, reminding superiors that nothing will be 100 percent er-rorfree.Keeptrackofthenumberof errors you do catch, and compare thattothetotalnumberoftypos.

Often typosoccurbecauseed-itors are pressured into choosing quantityoverqualitytomeetpub-lishingdeadlines.Explaintoacon-cerned superior that fewer typos would occur if editors had more timetoworkonpiecesor ifasec-ondeditorreviewedthepieces.

For me, Psalm 23 is more than just a pastoral psalm, it is the key to

thepathoffreelancesuccess.How-ever, that dream path was so big I wasn’tsureIcouldfollowit.Some-timesdreamslookbiggerthantheyreally are; yet in many respects, self gets in the way of the largeness of that dream, and it really isn’t the dreamloomingbeforeus.

The obstacle to success is us.Such was the case for me, aftergraduatingwith amaster’s degreeinEnglish.Writingandeditingwasin my blood—I dreamed it, ate it,

read about it, and jabbered on about it, ever eager to help the per-son in frontofmefix theirmanu-script issues, rewrite an in-officememo for clarity and conciseness, or offer suggestions after listeningto a friend brainstorm their manu-script. But even after working tenyears toward a bachelor’s in Pro-fessionalWritingandamaster’s inEnglishEducation,Istilldidn’t“feelready” to launch my freelance ed-iting career. Surely, I’d fail. You’regrinning now—because you know whatI’mtalkingabout.You’vebeentheretoo.

A friend pointed out Psalm 23 to me in a way that enlightened,

encouraged,andenlargedmyfaith.“To lie down in green pastures” meansto“grazeinsecurity.”AstheGood Shepherd, the Lord guides His children and wouldn’t want them to fail, so why should I think failing thoughts? You can go any-where, do anything, because the Lord is there each step of the way, guidingwithHissecurehand.AfterI removed self from my dream and putmyhandinGod’shand,lettingHim lead, I began to see stellar re-sults.Nomatterthecircumstancesinwhichwefindourselves,wearesecure in the palm of God’s hand, and that security allows us to graze successfullywithGod.

My grandchildren are moving into their teenage years. It’s hard to

takeashower?”Asthetalecontinuesthrough the three volumes, the girls grow up, begin to care for others, and learn there is life beyond high school socialevents.

eventinasrealisticawayaspossible,given no one knows the real results ofsuchanevent.Herresearchiswelldone, thus making the story more compelling.It’snotastoryofunendingviolence.Itisastoryofwhatmaymorelikely be people’s reaction. AlthoughBurkard also presents an element of

Christianity, it is without “Biblethumping.”Liketherestofhersto-ry,theChristianfamilyisbelievableintheirreactionsandtheirfaith.

I will be purchasing this series for my granddaughters. However,even though the intended audience is teenagers,don’tpass itup.Thisseries has a solid tale adults will alsoenjoy.

Seen on the table of a Houston-area WeightWatchersmeeting:asympa-thy card for one member, with the note“Sosorryforyourloss.”Some-how, that seemed ironic wording in the context of a weight-reductionsupportgroup.

Adidasdidn’tdomuchbetterwhen,after sponsoring the 2017 Boston Marathon, it sent those who com-pleted the race an e-mail with the note, “Congrats, you survived!”That went over poorly with people who remembered the deadly 2013 bombings, and Adidas wound up is-suing a public apology for its choice ofwords.
