University Mission Statement
The American University of Beirut (AUB) is an institution of higher learning founded to provide excellence in education, to participate in the advancement of knowledge through research, and to serve the peoples of the Middle East and beyond. Chartered in New York State in 1863, the University bases its educational philosophy, standards, and practices on the American liberal arts model of higher education. The University believes deeply in and encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to foster tolerance and respect for diversity and dialogue. Graduates will be individuals committed to creative and critical thinking, life-long learning, personal integrity and civic responsibility, and leadership.
Academic Advising Mission Statement
Academic advising is a collaborative process based on personal responsibility, regular interaction, and positive rapport between students and faculty. The American University of Beirut will provide students with an advising experience that facilitates personal development, enhances academic performance, and ensures progress towards graduation.
Responsibilities of Academic Advisers
Academic advisers have the following responsibilities:
• Support the mission of AUB to assist students to make appropriate academic and professional decisions, and to work with relevant faculty, student officers, administrative officers and staff to resolve student issues
• Be familiar with AUB’s academic programs, requirements, policies and procedures, including but not limited to: programs of study, how to add or withdraw, filing of petitions and forms, and determining academic standing
• Assist students to select appropriate classes, choose majors, and develop academic plans, while also helping students to recognize and work through issues that hinder academic performance
• Be sensitive and effective in assisting students with different life experiences, social and cultural backgrounds, values and abilities
• Be available and accessible to student advisees on a reasonable and reliable basis using an appropriate number of office hours
• Maintain student confidentiality and high degree of professionalism
• Help students to develop an understanding of academic and personal integrity
6 7
Responsibilities of Students
It is your responsibility to:
• Be familiar with AUB’s academic programs, degree requirements, policies, procedures and resources
• Make appointments with your academic adviser on a regular and timely basis, as required by the university, faculties and departments
• Respect the personal time and boundaries of your academic adviser by being on time for appointments, limiting interactions with advisers to posted office hours, and being fully prepared to discuss academic issues
• Keep your academic adviser informed of any changes that might impact or interfere with your academic progress
• Establish and maintain your AUB email account• Register for classes during your scheduled time period• Take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions• Be aware of the Student Code of Conduct:
Formal Complaints The University has designed distinct processes to provide prompt, reliable, and impartial resolution of allegations of a) discrimination; and b) sexual and other discriminatory harassment. Members of the AUB community who believe that they have been discriminated against, but not harassed, may file a grievance in accordance with the University’s Grievance Policy and Procedures, which provide different processes for faculty, staff, students, and third parties to address their concerns. All grievances alleging sex discrimination are routed to AUB’s Title IX coordinator, who directs the implementation and administration of university policies and procedures on sex discrimination, sexual harassment, and sexual violence. Members of the AUB community who believe they have been subjected to sexual or other discriminatory harassment may file a formal written complaint with the University’s Title IX coordinator or with a designated receiving officer in the President’s Office, who will log the complaint and deliver it to the Title IX coordinator. The University’s Procedures to Address Formal Allegations of Sexual and Other Discriminatory Harassment provide more specific instructions on the filing of harassment complaints and on related procedures.
Responsibilities of Department Chairs
Department Chairs have the following responsibilities:• Organize the structure and processes of the academic
advising system within their respective departments• Train departmental advisers to be responsible and committed
to academic advising• Address relevant advising issues, including but not limited
to: the performance of academic advising, curriculum reform and information management (updates to forms, e-petitions, degree requirements, undergraduate and graduate catalogues and opening capacity for students)
• Provide advisers and students within their respective departments with information about the advising process, including but not limited to: the names of advisers, changes in academic schedules, course equivalencies, and changes in programs of study
• When necessary, resolve advising issues in coordination with relevant faculty, student officers, administrative officers, and staff within the university and its various faculties
• Evaluate their department’s academic advisers and processes in coordination with the Academic Advising Unit within their respective faculty
• Serve as secondary academic advisers within their respective departments

Additional IT Tips
1) To Activate your new Student AUBnet Account
Go to any public computer lab and log in using “newstudent” for the username and the password
• Open your browser and go to https://myaccount.aub.edu.lb/ Or use any internet connected device
• Open your browser and go to https://myaccount.aub.edu.lb/
Prerequisites:• Your Student ID number (9 digit number)• Your Birth date or your ID barcode number (6 digit number
on back of AUBID)
2) To Connect to AUB Wireless• To connect inside AUB:
Connect to wireless network SSID, choose “AUBdot1x” Enter your AUBnet Account credentials when prompted
• To connect in any Eduroam member institutionConnect to wireless network SSID, choose “eduroam”Enter your AUBnet Account full credentials when prompted
• Prerequisites: You should have completed the activation processes (step 1 above)
• Advantage of “eduroam” connection:
If you are travelling or visiting other universities, you can connect to the Internet by simply selecting the eduroam Wi-Fi connection on your computer or smart device using your “home institution” credentials (user name and password)eduroam allows members from participating institutions to obtain free Internet connectivity in over 70 countries
86 87
3) To Check your Email
Open your browser and go to: https://outlook.com/mail.aub.edu
4) To Access our eLearning System “Moodle”:• Go to AUB homepage and click on “E-Learning” link, or• Open your browser and go to http://moodle.aub.edu.lb
Moodle (E-Learning) is the official Learning Management System (LMS) at AUB and it is used:
a. To teach Web-Enhanced, Blended/Hybrid, and online courses
b. As a means of communication between professors and their students
c. By professors to post all their course material, announcements related to the course, etc.
d. By students to access course resources and activities from any device (PC, Laptop, smartphone, IPad…) with Internet connection regardless of the Operating System
5) To Access the IT Service Catalogue:
Open your browser and go to https://www.aub.edu.lb/it/service catalog/pages/index.aspx
This provides the community with a comprehensive new way to access information about the services IT provides to students, faculty, staff, and the community at large. The catalog answers a frequently asked question - “What services do you offer as IT?”
That’s of course the tip of the iceberg: like a restaurant menu, it lists what could be served but doesn’t explain how the kitchen makes it happen.
6) To Get Assistance from IT Service Desk • You can log on to the Service Desk Portal:
https://servicedesk.aub.edu.lb/• Or email the IT Service desk at:
IT.helpdesk@aub.edu.lb
Important Notes:• IT Service Desk agents will only provide help with the
configuration once students have tried to configure their devices themselves.
• IT Service Desk does not support personal devices except in wireless configuration.
• Configuration for Phones and PDAs is done according to the manuals present online.
• If you have forgotten your AUBnet password, You can reset it by going to one of the above offices. Make sure you have your AUB Student ID with you.
• If you have forgotten your AUbnet username, you can look it up in the AUB Directory website (accessed from the computer labs) by searching for your name.
Note: AUBsis ID and pin code are different from your AUBnet username and password.

General Instructions
Arabic for Communication Skills Requirement
Students who are holders of the Lebanese Baccalaureate can fulfill the current Arabic for Communication Skills requirement by taking any of the Arabic courses that have the Arabic Communication Skills attribute without taking a placement exam.
Students who hold diplomas other than the Lebanese Baccalaureate can take a placement test (administered by the Department of Arabic) to determine their level of proficiency in Arabic and place them accordingly. Students whose Arabic proficiency is limited can be placed in Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL) courses.
The Writing Center
The Writing Center offers free support for all students on any writing task.
We know writing is hard! You don’t have to be a weak writer to come to the Writing Center: All writers need an extra pair of eyes (and ears) at some point.
What should you expect?
Our goal is to make you a better writer, not just make your paper better. Tutors will work with you individually or on group projects at all stages of the writing process: understanding an assignment, brainstorming ideas, organizing topics, citing sources, editing and proofreading, and more.
You will be the one doing the work: We support and advise as you write and edit. It doesn’t matter if you have one tiny question or if you have total writer’s block. We’ll help!
How should you prepare for an appointment?
Come ready to talk about what you’re struggling with, what questions you have, or what your concerns are.
Bring a digital or hard copy of your writing as well as the writing prompt (if there is one).
Writing takes time, so schedule an appointment well before your deadline, show up on time, and know that you might need multiple appointments to cover everything you want to.
Schedule an appointment, meet our tutors, and find resources
https://aub.edu.lb/writingcenter.25-minutes .50-minutes (for graduate students only)
Writing Center locations 214 Ada Dodge Hall – on the terrace 336 West Hall

Established to elevate the stature of the American University of Beirut (AUB) as a dynamic and leading research institution that empowers innovation in entrepreneurship, the Center for Research and Innovation (CRInn) launched in February 2015 under the oversight of the Office of Grants and Contracts (OGC) and the Technology Transfer Unit (TTU) at AUB.
CRInn is a creative hub that welcomes AUB students, alumni, staff and faculty members, guiding them across their journey of transforming their ideas into scalable startups.
We support members by (1) connecting them with leading mentors, investors and fellow entrepreneurs, (2) hosting customized workshops and inspiring talks, (3) collaborating with various AUB faculty and student groups to build a vibrant entrepreneurial community and (4) partnering with external players making a mark in the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

TOBACCO-FREE UNIVERSITY
The American University of Beirut was declared tobacco-free on January 1, 2018. This initiative is in line with numerous universities worldwide that have also made the decision to become tobacco-free, both indoors and outdoors. No smoking is allowed on AUB property. Compliance with the policy is mandatory.
Please take note that, in accordance with the Tobacco-Free Policy that is published with AUB’s policies and the Student Code of Conduct, violations of the policy will result in disciplinary measures. Smokers who are interested in quitting can seek support by calling the Smoking Cessation Program at AUBMC at extension 8030. Out of respect for the environment and the neighborhood, we urge smokers to dispose of their cigarettes in the assigned cigarette recycling receptacles while smoking outside the gates of the university and in its vicinity.
Welcome to AUB, and we hope that you will join us in keeping our campus healthy and clean. For more information about this initiative and the policy, please visit our website: www.aub.edu.lb/tobaccofree.
