1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

Elders and DeaconsWhat does Paul mean by “the husband of one wife?”

Some possibilities…

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

Elders and Deacons1. A leader must be married

(prerequisite for leadership)2. A leader can have only one wife in

his lifetime

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

Elders and Deacons3. A leader cannot be divorced4. A leader is faithful to his wife

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

RESPONSIBILITIES 4-6RESPONSIBILITIES 4-6False teachings/Cults

Common traits of a cult:1. Rejection of the deity of Christ2. Rejection of salvation by grace through faith3. Rejection of the resurrection of Christ

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

False teachings/Cults4. Adding to or altering Scripture5. Leadership that claims to be divine6. Leadership that does not tolerate questions7. Control over activities, friends and finances

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

False teachings/Cults8. Isolation from the outside world9. Indoctrination/brainwashing10. Meditation/chanting

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

False teachings/CultsA defense against false teachings/cults:

1. Discipline/train in godliness- no spiritual “flabbiness”!

2. Develop godliness now- “I’m too young to be godly” is a cop-out!

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

Instructions concerning various duties:1. The elderly2. The Elders3. Masters and slaves

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

Instructions concerning various duties:4. False teachers

- conceited- argument starters- use “religion” to make money

1 TIMOTHY1 TIMOTHY

Instructions concerning various duties:5. Money

- contentment + godliness = wealth- the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil

CALL OF A SOLDIER 1CALL OF A SOLDIER 12 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and discipline.

“No Fear”: God’s love removes fear1 John 4:18

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.

Power: Christ in us2 Corinthians 12:9

… most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

2 TIMOTHY2 TIMOTHY

Love: Agape!1 John 4:7-8

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

2 TIMOTHY2 TIMOTHY

Discipline: sound mind1 Timothy 4:7

… on the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

TITUSTITUS

Key passage: Titus 2:11-13… looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus

TITUSTITUS

Jehovah’s Witness version… looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and the Savior, Christ Jesus

TITUSTITUS

Jehovah’s Witness version… looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and the Savior, Christ Jesus

TITUSTITUS

“our great God and the Savior, Jesus Christ”

Adding the word “the” causes the text to state that God and Jesus are two different and separate beings!

TITUSTITUS

How do we refute this?

1. 1. No early manuscripts contain a “the” between God and Christ Jesus

2. The Granville Sharp Rule: phrases in the form of noun and noun emphasize the unity of the nouns

TITUSTITUS

Titus 3:10-11

Reject the factious man after a first and second warning, knowing that such a man is perverted and is sinning being

self-condemned.

TITUSTITUS

Titus 3:10-11

self-condemned.

TITUSTITUS

Titus 3:1-2Remind the people to be subject to rulers and

authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be

peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.

TITUSTITUS

Titus 3:1-2Remind the people to be subject to rulers and

authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be

peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.

Opposite? Disobedient, do whatever is wrong, slander everyone, belligerent and inconsiderate, arrogant.

““Christians” can act either Christians” can act either way. Both ways way. Both ways

demonstrate Jesus love. demonstrate Jesus love.

TITUSTITUS

Titus 3:3At one time we too were foolish,

disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated

and hating one another.

Sounds like the opposite person right? There is a change that happens to true Christians!

TITUSTITUS

Titus 3:4-8But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,

he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom

he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we

might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these

things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These

things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
