‘Flogging’lands manin prisonBy ELLIE TURNER

A MAN jailed over the brutalbashing of a violent homeinvader can’t accept that hedid wrong, the NT SupremeCourt has heard.

Jeremy Brazendale admit-ted causing serious harmto Shaun Dennington —who suffered a broken eyesocket, elbow and ribs andbruising — when he gavehim ‘‘a good flogging’’ with apiece of wood.

Justice Judith Kelly said:‘‘That does not begin todescribe it. You delivered asavage beating with a wea-pon to a man lying helplesson the ground.

‘‘Mr Dennington was ag-gressive . . . your initial reac-tion, to your credit, was totry to calm him down.

‘‘Then he punched you inthe face. You were entitled todefend yourself and yourhome. But what you did canonly be described as an ex-treme overreaction.’’

The court heard Mr Den-

nington was drinking with awoman at Wisdom Bar onMitchell St when he becameangry about a friend’s trou-ble with an ex-partner namedJack Ranshaw.

He rocked up to con-front Mr Ranshaw, whowas at Brazendale’s home, and pushed his way insidethe house.

Brazendale tried to con-vince the victim to go homebut Mr Dennington punchedhim in the face.

He grabbed a 5cm-widepiece of timber and jabbedMr Dennington, making himfall out the door.

He continued to strike himas he lay on the ground try-ing to shield himself. MrDennington then fled.

Justice Kelly said Brazen-dale had a long criminalhistory, including assaultson a police officer and a pub-lic servant.

Brazendale will serve ninemonths of a 27-month headsentence before being re-leased on a bond.

Mum’s magnificentJORDAN Montgomery sayshis mum is always there forhim — so he nominated herfor Barnardos Mother of theYear program.

She last week won theALDI and Barnardos Motherof the Week prize and is inthe running for the big one.

‘‘I saw the ad on TV and asI was watching it I kind oflooked at mum and she waslike, ‘What?’,’’ the 14-year-oldGunn resident said.

‘‘And then I went, ‘Where’syour computer?’ and I wentover and nominated her.

‘‘What inspired me to do itis that whenever I needsomething or need to go

somewhere, all the time, she’s always there. No mat-ter what, pretty much, she isalways there.’’

Mother-of-two NicoleMontgomery said she washonoured to be recognised.

Barnardos Australia mar-keting and fundraising direc-tor Manisha Amin saidNicole always put her familybefore herself, and with herhusband working in the de-fence force she had to juggleher sons’ sport and after-school activities.
