KOLKATA, February 19(IANS): The West Bengalgovernment is conductingacting workshops for sexworkers to help them get jobsin the entertainment industry,a minister said on Friday.

Sixty sex workers andtheir children were given actinglessons as well as training injewellery and costume makingon Friday under a project called‘Swabalamban Special’, SashiPanja, who is minister of statefor women development,social welfare and childdevelopment, told IANS.

“Many of them areattracted to the glamour worldand through acting lessonsthey can work as junior artistsin television and movies of theregional film industry,” shesaid.

GANGTOK, February 19: Adaylong workshop on‘Pradhan Mantri KrishiSinchai Yojana in Sikkim forthe Financial Year 2015-16’was organized by the FoodSecurity & AgriculturalDevelopment department incollaboration with ICAR,Indian Institute of WaterManagement, Bhubaneswar atSAMETI training hall,opposite ICAR, Tadong onThursday.

The technical knowledgefor the preparation of DistrictIrrigation Plan, (DIP) and theState Irrigation Plan (SIP), bythe officers of Agriculture andHorticulture and allieddepartments were highlightedin the workshop, informs a

press release.Around 80 participants

including SAMETI director,officials, engineers, villagelevel workers, field assistants,block technology managersfrom Agriculture, Horticulture

and line departments took partin the workshop.

The resource persons wereSWC engineering principalscientist R.K. Panda andICAR-IIWM senior scientistDr. Ranu Rani Sethi.

Panda made hispresentation on some of thevarious important issues ofwater management like soilerosion and land degradationprocess , s t ream bankerosion, contour trenches,stone wall, farm ponds andterracing.

Likewise, Dr. Sethi gavepresentat ion on waterrequirement of importantcrops, ground waterresources, irrigation supplychain, water sources, farmlevel management and wateruse efficiency.

The participants laid theirdoubts and queries in thesecond half of the workshop.

The resource persons leftno stone unturned to clears allthe queries raised by theparticipants, adds the release.

The person brought atRangpo PHC for medical careby Bengal Police on February14 is still under sub-consciousstage.

GANGTOK, February 19: Anew-born baby weighing amere 700 grams has survivedagainst all odds after numerousmedical interventions at NeotiaGetwel, Siliguri.

The journey of the infantfrom ventilation-CPAP-oxygen-without oxygen lastedfor 75 days. In theultrasonography, it was foundthat there was no amniotic fluidin the sac.

The husband had given hisconsent for his wife to besaved amongst the two due toneurological condition;however Dr. Khemkaproceeded with the medical

proceedings and saved bothmother and baby.

When the child took birthafter a gestation period of sevenmonths she did not cry,respiration and heart rate wasalso very low. The baby aftera tough strife for survival inthe Intensive Neonatal CareUnit of Neotia has nowrecovered and has beendischarged after 75 days inhealthy condition.

Ashok Yadav, the fatherof the baby expressed histhankfulness to the entire teamof paediatrics and neonatologyof Neotia Getwel for theirintegrated approach in helpingthem in having their childalive.

Addressing the sabha, thepanchayat presidenthighlighted about the schemesunder five year plan likeconstruction of toilet indifferent schools of the GPU,construction of garbagecollection bins, drinking watersupply to schools,construction of cow shed,

poultry, piggery and fisheriesfarming, construction of newroad and footpath and upgradation of Kokaley primaryschool among others.

Panchayat secretary R.P.Regmi presented the accountdetails of the GPU for the year2014-15.

The gram sabha alsopassed the beneficiaries list ofwidow pension and grant fordifferently abled persons.

The Tintek BDOmentioned that the gram sabhais a decentralisation of powerand said that people should beaware of the activities of thegram panchayat and thegovernment. He further urgedthe line departments to increasecoordination with the BAC andGPU.

GANGTOK, February 19: A25-year-old youth fromDaragaon, Jorethang wasattacked with an axe by twoassailants after a scuffleescalated on February 18.

The incident took placenear Jorethang seniorsecondary school.

The victim was taken toJorethang PHC where themedical authorities deemed theinjury as not fatal.

The assailants are still atlarge and Jorethang police isinvestigating the matter.
