DINING GROUP

The Dining Group continued its world wide tour and for the final meal of the year in December touched down for a Jamaican beach party at the James’ house. They were joined on the beach by Caroline who was on holiday in Jamaica! As was fitting for a party the evening started with an “old Jamaican cocktail” (and rum continued to flow through the evening!), continued with sweet potato fritters and hot banana salsa appies followed by sweet potato soup, culminated with goat curry, jerk pork, tropical chicken and saltfish with ackee, and was topped off with pineapple upside down cake! These dinners are always great fun and help us see the world through our tummies! -Colin James

This is the photo from our last dinner. As you can tell the theme was Jamaican. left to right, Colin James, Jean Tilt, Caro-line Laitenen, Shane Haywood, Ron Haywood, Peter Tilt and Katie James. -Tom Walton

On December 13, Heidi Coleman proudly showed us R.I.H.’s new Clinical Services building, it’s truly a facility to be proud of.

TEA CONNOISSEURSPROBUS MEN’S COOKERS

3

The Men’s cooking group met for its second session of the season at Tom Walton's house on January 5th. Although close on the heels of the Christmas season; under the able supervision of Tom, we all managed to summon up enough enthusiasm to prepare a fine, plain, meal of pork chop medallions au gratin (set on a bed of finely chopped onions and finely sliced pota-toes) - although Chris Rose's idea of what constituted "finely sliced" was a matter of debate! The first thing my dear wife asked me after I had described what we had prepared was "And what did you have for vegetables?" Even after I had patiently explained that onions and potatoes are vegetables she seemed to think we had missed something.-John Crowe

The picture below was taken at our most recent Tea Connoisseurs get together at Elaine Wood’s. The story on the picture goes something like this – How often does the colour of the tea, match the pattern of the Royal Albert Blossom Time teacup? Rarely, I would think but Elaine managed to do this with her “Sleigh Ride” tea which was a blend of many blossoms and other exotic ingredients. Very tasty! The Red Velvet Whoopee Cookies and Buttery Pumpkin cook-ies make a good backdrop for the tea. We also enjoyed tea from Rita McNeil’s Tea House in Big Pond, Nova Scotia. A pleasant way to spend a very cold January afternoon!

At the Tea Connoisseurs January 5th get together. Peter is the only gentle-man member of the group. He has no trouble holding his own amongst the ladies.

SNOWSHOEING GROUP 2017

This was our first snowshoe of the season. There are a couple of pics that together show all of the “brave” 4 who ventured into the freezing temps. You may want to use all or parts of the remarks. If you are interested in this activity, Give Bill Flyn a call or sign the sheet at the Probus sheet at the next Probus meeting.. Some would say, “hardy”, others “foolhardy”. But then “intrepid” might fit too after a day which began with some “trepidation”. What a great first snowshoe of the year it turned out to be, on Tuesday January 3rd, for the Probus Snowshoers. Wind chill -23 ºC? No bother! Blue skies, sunshine and lots of snow at Stake Lake made the day for Joanne and Gary McClelland (Probus Thompson), Larry Dixon (Pro-bus Thompson) & Bill Flynn (Probus Kamloops). We followed the Giant Fir, Marsh and Lake Trails in an interesting 4.25 km circuit out from and back to the Lodge. In all it took an hour and 25 min. Various ailments and the continuing cold weather led to only 7 signing up before departure. Of those, 3 didn’t make it on the day since it was so cold.

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2017 (CONTINUED FROM LAST PAGE)

David & Jan Davies, Donna Cassidy, Janet McChesney, Gordon & Anne Lloyd & Sheena & Bill Flynn are obviously enjoying the good food and lively conversation at the Christmas lunch.

Peter Allik-Petersenn presented Norm Moss with a gift certificate to Hoodoo’s as a “thank you” in appreciation for the work he did as President last year
