Newsletter No 14 18th September, 2020
From the Principal’s Desk
Reception Enrolments 2021 and planning 2021 We have a very long waiting list so please contact the front office immediately if you have a child (sibling) who will be starting school next year. Once our second round offers are accepted, we will be at capacity. If you are leaving us at the end of the year please let the front office know ASAP so we can begin accepting other year levels from our 2021 waiting list.
Writing and mathematics focus Our work on our Site Improvement Plan is continuing with staff PLC’s (Professional Learning Communities) and a Pupil Free day utilising our literacy and numeracy coaches to identify improvement strategies and then implement them. We have spent considerable time this term looking at the language of mathematics and having cosistency of approach across the year levels. We will be sharing with parents early next term some small vocabulary changes which will help students with their conceptual development. Our writing improvement has been going ahead in leaps and bounds. Students are experiencing the joy of writing through bookmaking and writer’s notebook strategies. Teachers have also built their capacity through training in Writing Plus and Brightpath. We have also participated in our Partnership moderation of English where our students were outstanding in the moderation of A and B level portfolios.
STEM updates Our STEM ambassadors have been busy creating a KIDS Teach STEM conference online with our interstate connections. All of the schools involved have produced a
video with local STEM professionals to help students understand the many and varied pathways to a career in STEM. The videos are hosted online. These videos were officially launched via Teacher’s Mutual bank and Social Ventures Australia with a video being added each week over the next few months. Our students led a presentation to 50 leaders and teachers from around Australia at our latest online version of SVA conference.
Parking Conditions Change Prospect Council are preparing new signage to put up around the school. To improve traffic flow during pick up and drop off, Arthur St will have more 15 min parks and Stuart road will have an extended drop and go zone. All students who are being picked up via “drop and go” will have to do so on Stuart Road where we can monitor them. Arthur St will be for parents to park and come in. Please be aware that conditions will change soon, keep a check on the signage.
Sports day We are planning to have Sports Day in week 4 next term. We want to give the students the opportunity to participate in the day but Due to Covid restrictions we will not be able to have parents attending. We have a planning group running through the logistics of the day, and will let you know what is decided early next term.

Spanish in Term 3
P.E in Term 3 Year 6 and 7 students have been undertaking a ‘Roles in Sport’ unit of work, using the SEPEP (Sports Education in Physical Education Programs) learning model. In this unit, students developed, learnt and performed different basketball skills and games, whilst also having an off-court role, such as being a team manager, coach, scorer, captain, and referee. This enabled students to experience varieties of roles that they can have in sporting teams or clubs, with a variety of social and community health benefits. The SEPEP lessons ended with a round robin tournament, which showed some good basketball skills and team work.
‘The most important thing I learnt was being a referee. The role was hard because players would argue when they disagreed with a call, decision or foul. You would then have to be assertive and manage the players to ensure the game continues on’ – Oskar
‘I learnt that managing a team is hard. You have to choose rules for your team members and remind them about their roles and responsibilities to the team on and off the court’ – Aryan
In other year levels, students have been focusing on a variety of invasion games and sports, such as basketball and soccer.
The Spanish topic for term 3 has been ‘feelings’. Students have shared with others students situation that made them feel: estoy contento/a (I’m happy), estoy triste (I’m sad), estoy aburrido/a (I’m bored), tengo miedo (I’m scared), estoy cansado/a (I’m tired), estoy orgulloso/a (I’m proud), estoy decepcionado/a (I’m disappointed), tengo hambre (I’m hamgry) etc. For Receptions, the most common answer when asked what made them happy was to play with their friends and play on the computer. What comforts them the most when they are sad is a hug from mum or with their stuffed animal. They feel proud when they win a game or finish a task. They feel disappointed when their mum does not keep her word or they can’t go on holidays because of Covid. They feel tired after a race and scared when it is dark. Students talked very openly about strategies that help them to stay calm when they get upset, like breathing deeply, thinking about something that is fun, drawing or cuddle their soft toy.
Students from Room 0 dancing Valeria’s choreography of the song
“Por la vereda del sol”sung by Diego Torres. This is a translation
of the song ‘I’m walking on sunshine’ by Katrina & the Waves
Students from Rooms 14/15 playing a traditional Spanish game 'El pañuelo' (the handkerchief) to review the vocabulary of feelings.
Students from Studio 12 playing battle ships to practice sentences
about family and feelings
Reception and Year 1 students’ mini books about feelings

Visual Arts in Term 3 This term in Visual Arts students have been experimenting with various mediums and using different techniques. Throughout the first half of term, the year 5-7 students have been working on personal learning projects, in which they have each designed, planned and created an artwork of their own choice. This work has ranged from digital artworks, to henna designs and even the construction of board games. In the second half of term these students have delved into the process of String-Block Printing and have printed mythical creatures as part of this unit. Reception and year ones have been working with a different medium/elements of art per week. This has included working with pastels and completing collages whilst learning colour theory and other key concepts of Portrait and Landscape. The middle years have been learning the art of weaving, especially circle weaving with plates and wool. Some classes have now moved onto research Graffiti style artwork and are working in groups to design their own large-scale piece.

This inspired us to write a persuasive letter to convince Mr Wegner to supply us with a set of laptops to support us with
our personal investigations!
As a class we deconstructed and analysed
a variety of persuasive letters. This is what
we found that made them most
effective…
- High modality words
- Rhetorical questions
- Power of 3
- Repetition
- Strong elaborations and examples
This term, we have been learning about writing persuasive letters in order to convince our reader
of something we want to have, something we want to happen or something we want to stop.
