HISTORY AND CULTURE
The islands were discovered by a Dutch explorer and navigator Abel Tasman in 1642. So it was a Dutch colony
first and James Cook claimed the country for Great Britain in 1769. New Zealand was named after a part of
Holland – Zealand.
The first inhabitants were Maoris who were originally
cannibals of Polynesia. They arrived at the shore of the island
by canoes and began building a settlement. Over the years,
they developed their own distinct culture, the Maori. The
Maori has a rich and unique culture, with their own
traditions and lifestyles including carving, weaving, moko /
tattoo), the Kapa Haka (group performance) and many more.
The Haka is now represented by the New Zealand Rugby
Team, the “All Blacks”. They always perform this ritual dance
on the field before every game. The sample of the Haka
