As a result of this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe the SEP “Developing and Using Models”

• Create a basic lesson or revise a lesson using the aforementioned practice

Modeling can begin in the earliest grades, with students’ models progressing from concrete “pictures” and/or physical scale models (e.g., a toy car) to more abstract representations of relevant relationships in later grades, such as a diagram representing forces on a particular object in a system. (NRC Framework, 2012, p. 58)

What is a model?

• Models are external representations of mental (internal) concepts

• A scientific model can be used to see patterns, identify relationships or mechanisms, construct or communicate explanations or make predictions

• All models contain approximations and assumptions

• a scientific model is an abstract, simplified representation of a system that makes its most important features explicit and visible
