PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

In the preface to the Panwmma-Ralpa'Sutra, Part I, all that needs

be said with reference to Nityoisava has been said. It only remains to

mention the MS$. on which this edition of Nityotsava is based,

They are as follows:.

' ' '

1, A grantha manuscript copy of the Adyar Library, No, XXXVB 103;;cited as *

2, Another granlha manuscript copy of the Adyar Library, No.

VIII F 18; cited as v

3, A grantha manuscript copy kindly lent by Mr, M. V. Srinivasa

Iyer of Triplicane, Madras; cited as'

4-6 Devanagari MS. copies of Central Library, Baroda, Ace,

Nos. 183, 4637, 5572; cited as * v* '<>* '* respectively,

.7, A Telugu MS. copy borrowed by Pandit R. Anantakrishna

SaStri from the owner in the Nizam's Dominions, cited as fl.

Of these No. 3 is the most carefully prepared copy. The others

are all tolerably correct, except for some clerical errors. Two or three

of these MSS, contain each here and there passages not found in the

other MSS. Of these the important and useful ones have been

embodied in this edition, the source being noted in each case.

A. MAHADEVA SASTRI

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION

Nityotsava, the present work, was first edited by Pt. A.

Mahadeva Sastri, the Curator of the Adyar and the Mysore Govern-

ment Libraries and was published in the Gaekwad's Oriental Series, as

No. XXIII in 1923. It then appeared as the second part or supple-

ment to the Parasuramakalpasutra, which too was published in the

same year under the same editorship as No. XXII in the Series. The

ever-growing interest of Sanskrit scholars and lay public in mystic

sciences of the Hindus is responsible for the rapid sale of the first

edition, and this has been a matter of gratification for both the present

editor and the authorities of the Oriental Institute. The first edition

of the Paras'uramakalpastura also is by now completely exhausted

and ere long a second edition is likely to be placed before the public.

The work of preparing a revised edition of the work Nityotsava

was very kindly entrusted to me by my learned and esteemed friend

Dr. Benoytosh Bhattacharyya, M, A,, Ph.D., the Director of the

Oriental Institute, to whom I hereby offer my sincere and heartfelt

thanks for thus presenting me with an opportunity to be of some*1

service to the devotees of Sri Vidya in placing before them this revised

edition.

In the present edition, I have made use of a MS of the work, which

once belonged to the collection of Snvijayananda Natha of Surat. This

was obtained through the kind offices of my friend Krsnalal

Bhagavanji Manraji of Dwarka to whom also I take this opportunity of

offering my grateful thanks for this act of courtesy. The variants found

by me according to this manuscript have been designated as ?T and

are incorporated in this edition.

The author Umanandanatha refers, in the course of this Paddhati-

work, to several Mantras. As the devotees are likely to experience

some difficulty in the absence of the full text of these Mantras owingtoJthe original text of Tantras being inaccessible, as also because of

the Availing ignorance in the matter of the theory and practice of

in mddern days, the Mantras have been given in theif

the Appendix; and, it is hoped that the enthusiastic

sswill benefit themselves by the same.

Vll

The Kulakulacakra likewise was not given in the previous edition.

It was obtained through much effort and search, and has been insertedin the Appendix in this edition. The connection existing between theritualistic portions and the philosophic tenets as taught in the workdeserves to be carefully studied according to the traditions of thescience and the results arising out of such discussions explained in theIntroduction ;

for reasons more than one this has to be postponed for

some later occasion. In case the work of re-editing the Paraiuramakal-pasiitra comes up in the near future, an attempt will be made in its

Introduction to do some justice* to the . subject It will also be myearnest endeavour to give in the forthcoming Sutra edition, the diagramsexplaining the various Yantras referred to in the present work.

Umanandanatha, the author and compiler of this work, (referredto on p. 59 of Nityotsava) mentions that he was the disciple of thefamous Bhaskararaya Makhindra, otherwise known as Bhasurananda-natha. An account of the ideal life led by this great luminaryamongst the Tantric Acaryas, his vast learning, the works attributed to

him, with a list of the works referred; to or quoted by him in his

several works, etc., I hope to give in the ensuing edition of the Sutra, when an opportunity presents itself.

RamesJvara, the commentator on Para^uramakalpasutra, in his

roc*mmentary, entitled the Saubhagyodaya mentions about himself

(p. 367) that he was living in Slaka 1753 (A. D. 1831); As this

Rame<ivara criticises in many places in his work the views held byUmanandanatha, it may be considered as an established fact thatUmananda must have composed his Nityotsava long before this date

and, that the work had come into sufficient prominence and recog-nition by 1753 Saka or the time when Rame^vara flourished. This is

corroborated by the fact that Umanandanatha mentions at the close of

Nityotsava the date of the composition of his work as being Siaka 1697'(A. D, 1775) or the Kali year 4876.

Umanandanatha is the name of our author as he was known after

his DiksS (or the. initiation ceremony); while before this event, his

name was Jagannatha Pandita, his father's Balakrs^a and his mother's

Lak?ml, his gotra being that of V&vamitra, and his surname beingSrutapetava- He is also said to have been a Maharastra Brahmanawho received great honours at the hands of the Maratha Princes of

the royal family at Tanjore ; (see Nityosava p. 173 and BhaskaravilSsa,verse 111.)

Among the 58 works referred to by our author in the

Vlll

work, about 32 works are at present available, and the remaining too

may be brought to light some day, if the collection of MSS and the

publication of rare works are carried on with greater zeal than at

present.

When the available Tantric works will be studied by scholars

and the deserving among them published, the research scholar study-

ing the science from the historical standpoint, as well as others in

India interested in the science itself, will, it is hoped, find themselves

in a position to benefit themselves immensely; for, the revival of Tantric

culture means the revival of the spiritual culture for which India had

ever been famous,

Baroda,. TRIVIKRAMA TIRTHA,

13th January 1931.

PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION

The Nityotsava which is a supplement to the famous Tantra work

the Parasurama Kalpastttra was published as early as the year 1923 for

the first time. It was ably edited by the late lamented scholar Pandit

A. Mahadeva Shastri of Adyar. This work proved extremely popular,

and the devotees of Tantra as are still available in India found the

Nityotsava of practical value in their daily and occasional worship. The

first edition was soon exhausted, and in 1930 a second edition was issued

with some supplementary matter under the editorship of the late Swafcnr

Trivikrama Tirtha of revered memory. It is a matter of great satisfac-

tion to see that the second edition with larger number of copies was

also exhausted during war years.

It was thus found necessary to issue a third edition since the

demand for this book went on increasing. The difficulties of printing

and labour created by the war made it impossible for our printers to

undertake or continue this work. But thanks to the new Manager of

the State Press, Baroda, Mr. R. G. Thakar, the work of reprinting was

taken up last June and finished within a month in July 1948. MrThakar deserves all our thanks for having done the third edition expe-

ditiously and excellently.'

\ In issuing the third edition the work of proof correction Wats, done

entirely% Pandit Raghavan Nambiyar, Catalogue Assistant of this

Office, tviio spared ho pains to present the text as faithfully as in the

^rii^r edition^ Sincere thanks of the General Editor are due to hint
