Have a lovely holiday break and stay safe
It has been a busy Term 2 and I wish all students and parents a safe and happy holiday. I look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 18th July. Staff and students both start on Monday 18th. We have a number of new students starting Term 3 so it will be a busy holiday for some parents. I en-courage all parents with new students who may be attending the College in 2012 to contact me very early in Term 3.

Reports and Parent Teacher Nights This is the last week of term and teachers are busy writing reports
for Semester 1. These will be sent home prior to the Parent-Teacher
Day and Night. Parent Teacher Night will be held on St Mina and St
Marina Church at 59 Saffron Drv, Hallam from 4pm to 8pm. Like
2010 we will hold the evening . For those who cannot attend at night
we will also be
holding interviews on the following day from 10am to 3pm at the
College. We were really pleased with the number of parents who
attended last year and to enable time for each family to speak with
their child‟s teacher we will be organising appointments with you to
discuss your child in these times.
I would like to remind parents of the promotion policy at the
College and the need for children to meet the criteria to proceed to
the next level. Even though this report is for Semester One, allowing
time for further improvement in Semester two, if you are not happy
with the progress of your child then I encourage you to speak to me
at these meetings or contact me at the College.
Under pressure paying fees? If you are finding it difficult to pay your school fees, then you are not alone. About one-third of our parents have a Health Care Card, some are still studying, while others are just between jobs. At these times your Coptic College is here to help. Please do not hesitate to contact me or our Business Manager Ms Mariam Matta, if you need our help with paying school fees. What is most important to us is your child‟s education and we would hate them to leave our College. We have a range of ways we can help. Please contact us.
Thank you for helping with health Care Card enquiries
Last week we contacted every family by phone to see if they were holders of a Health Care Card. The purpose was to determine families receive Government assistance which means the College can get more government finance and thus keep fee rises to a minimum, or support those who cannot afford their fees. As a result of this survey and your cooperation we now have identified that we have four times as many card holding families than we had records for. This also means that we can help these families by making them aware of Government assistance and how to receive it. I thank you very much for your assistance with this research.

Year 10 VCE information evening It has come to the time of year where our school is recommending year 10 students begin to
explore the variety of courses offered by different universities and their prerequisites. For
example their will be an information evening run by La Trobe University on Thursday 28 July
2011 at 6-7:30PM, Union Hall, Melbourne campus. This event is designed specifically for year
10 students and their parents, as a preliminary to starting VCE studies. It will be an ample
opportunity for students and parents to ask questions, collect information and discuss courses
with faculty course advisers
Interested students can register on line at www.latrobe.edu.au/year10
Does your child need extra help with Maths Maths Online is a completely independent maths tutoring website available free of charge to
every secondary school student in Australia. Provided by McDonald's Australia, high schools
have unlimited access to the program with the option to register an entire school, maths class,
or individual. To find out how you can get involved please visit: www.mathsonline.com.au
This will be the last newsletter for term 2. I would like to take this op-
portunity to thank all of the year 9 and 10 teachers for their exceptional
effort in improving our program and for the extra help they provided to
each student. I would also like to commend the students for their
well-mannered behaviours and academic progress displayed throughout
term 2.

DEACON TRAINING /CHOIR
DEAR PARENTS OF YEAR 9 & 10 STUDENTS
“Know the God of your father,
and serve him with a loyal heart
and with a willing mind”.
(1 Chronicles 28:9).
I was recommended at the be-
ginning of this year to teach
Coptic hymns to the middle and
high school deacons at St
Anthony‟s Coptic Orthodox
College. Since I have arrived at
the school I have begun to form
the St. Anthony‟s Coptic
Orthodox College Deacons
Choir. My vision is to form a
deacons choir that will base a
strong foundation for Coptic Or-
thodox deacons now and in the
future of this school as later in
the coming years I would like to
implement a mentoring buddy
system. I have been doing this
through.......
Topics about deaconship each
level with its duties and
responsibilities
Retreats
Deacon Badges for motivation
and commitment to deaconship
Other outings
I would also like to encourage
other deacons that have not
heard about this deacon‟s choir
and would like to attend to
please come on Tuesday‟s during
lunchtime.

VCE NEWS
VCE
Information night
A VCE information evening will be held on the evening of Thursday 11th August 2011. This evening is for all parents of students and students undertaking their VCE studies at St Anthony‟s Coptic Orthodox College next year.
It is expected that all current year 10 and 11 students and their parent(s) attend. During the evening a range of issues regarding VCE will be addressed including:
Requirements for successful completion of VCE
Scaling and the ATAR (Previously ENTER)
The VCAL program
Subjects available for selection
VCE teaching staff will be available to assist with selection of subjects.
July – Break
The upcoming break should be seen as a break from school and not a holiday. VCE students cannot afford to use the upcoming break as a holiday. For them it is simply a break from attending school. In year 12 I would still expect them to work 4 to 6 hours per day on:
Holiday homework
Preparing study notes for their subjects
Revising those study notes.
All VCE stu-dents will have homework to complete during this break. It is essen-tial that this work is completed so that the new term can commence with everyone at the same point.
Success in VCE
Too many VCE students do not want to have a successful year .In a previous edition of the newsletter I outlined what students need to do in order to succeed in their VCE. These included:
Time management (A weekly study/work timetable)
Preparing Study notes. (For each subject based on the study design)
Revising Study notes
Practice exams. Do as many of these as possible in the few weeks leading up to the exams.
It was disappointing to see too many students had not completed the above in the lead up to the recent mid-year exams. Too many students were finalising study notes, did not have study notes, were photocopying other peoples study notes or downloading study notes. These study notes should have been completed weeks before the exams. In those last couple of weeks leading up to exams successful students would be completing practice exams.

VTAC Selections
Year 12 students will need to select
courses through VTAC during August
and September. While this is still some
time off students need to start thinking
about and researching different course
options. Ways to research course
options include:
Attending open days at Universities and
TAFE‟s. All open days are available on
the VTAC website. http://
www.vtac.edu.au/opendays.html
Purchasing a VTAC guide.
Available from me for those that
ordered one at a cost of $15.00
each.
Using the coursesearch option on
the VTAC Website. http://
www.vtac.edu.au/
Searching the various University and
TAFE websites.
I will be spending time with the year 12
students ensuring that they know how
to and do complete their course
selections through VTAC.
If you have any concerns, issues or ideas
then please contact me at college on

Mid Year Reports
Mid-year reports are in the process of
being completed and will be ready to be
presented to parents on the evening of
Thursday 28th July. The reports will
have the same grading scale for
assessments in all grades up to year 11.
That scale will be the one on the table
below,
The reports will be in a new format and
I would encourage parents to give
feedback to the college regarding the
format. Feedback may include things
that you would like included in reports.
This feedback can then be considered
for future reports.

Chemical reaction that involves acids and bases play an important role in our lives. They occur in
kitchen, in the laundry, in the garden, in swimming pools, and even inside our body. Acidity or
Basicity of a substance is measured by using a pH scale. Universal indicator is a mixture of
indicators that changes colour as the strength of acid or base changes. The above experiment
helps students understand the Theory of Neutralisation using acid and bases of different
concentrations.
YEAR 9 SCIENCE: UNDERSTANDING THE
FAULTS AND FOLDS
The earth‟s crust is not still-it is constantly moving and
changing .Nor is it dull- deep beneath the surface is a layer
of red-hot molten rock which sometimes burst through
resulting in volcanoes, mountains and sometimes even
faults. Students get a firsthand experience of how these
natural phenomenons take place when they make their own
models of cross section of earth and folds that results in
mountain ranges with synclines and anticlines.
MODELS OF SYNCLINES AND ANTICLINE
AND THE INTERIOR OF THE EARTH.

their unit on Nutrients
YEAR 9 SCIENCE :
FASCINATING
CHEMISTRY
All synthetic materials we
call plastics are polymers.
Polymers are very large
molecules that consist of
many repeating units
called monomers.
Monomers are small
molecules.
Most monomers contain
the element carbon.
Students are making
polymers using sodium
alginate and calcium
chloride solution.

Year 7‟s break through
during some of their many
matches on the day.
The successful year 7 boys soccer team. After not losing any of their preliminary matches the boys
went on to win their final 1 – 0 in extra time thanks to a superbly curved ball from Meron Negassi
that flew between the top of the keepers hands and the top of the goals, a FANTASTIC strike.

SOCCER RALLY DAY
This term has seen the College compete in all levels of
Inter school Soccer. Our College was extremely well
represented at these events, with both a boys and girls
team competing in all but one of the five days on offer.
We have had some fantastic results across all year levels
and students have displayed excellent sportsmanship to
other schools, as well as fantastic team spirit amongst
our own college.
This year St Anthony‟s won THREE pennants, in the
following year levels:
Year 10 Boys VCE (year 12) Boys Year 7 Boys
In addition to this, a number of our teams made divisional finals, an outstanding result for the
college.
SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS
Many thanks to all our college community for the great
work done in collecting Coles vouchers last year for the
„Sports for Schools‟ program that was run. The
response from all parents, students and friends of the
college meant that the school received over 33,000
reward points, which gave us the opportunity to
purchase over $3000 of new equipment. Some of the
items purchased are listed below:

RAAF MUSEUM POINT COOK EXCURSION
Grade 1 and 2 went on an excursion to The Pont Cook RAAF Museum to learn about early aviation in
Australia. All Students sat in the cockpit of a Hercules cargo plane. Students were shown around the
Museum by retired pilots from the Australian defence forces.
Students were able to compare and contrast their learnt knowledge from integrated studies.
Students in Grade 1 and 2 highly recommended this experience to all.
