INTRODUCTION
The companies listed in this directory are helping to solve North Carolinas solid waste problem. They are also a vital part of North Carolinas economy, responsible for creating thousands of jobs, millions of dollars of capital investment, and making considerable additions to the state tax base. They help to close the recycling loop by manufacturing new products from recyclable materials. These companies play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and stability of recycling andgenerating economic opportunity by providing valuable markets for the materials collected inresidential and workplace recycling programs.
This directory is designed to help consumers and buyers in both the public and private sectorsidentify recycled products available from North Carolina manufacturers. Government agencypurchasers should refer to the Division of Purchase and Contact, N.C. Department ofAdministrations Web page, located at www.doa.state.nc.us/PandC, for recycled products availablethrough North Carolina state term contracts.
To have a product added or removed from this directory, contact the N.C. Division of Pollution(DPPEA) at (919) 715-6500, or complete the form on pages 43-44. For additional informationabout buying recycled products turn to the Buy Recycled Resources section (pages 40-42) of thisdirectory or visit the DPPEA Web site at www.p2pays.org/br.
HOW TO USE THIS DIRECTORY
The products in this directory are divided into nine main categories: 1) Agricultural/AnimalProducts, 2) Building/Construction Products, 3) Miscellaneous Products, 4) Organic Products, 5)Office Products, 6) Pallets, 7) Paper Products, 8) Textile Products, and 9) Transportation Products. In each category, products are listed with two different percentages, %RC and %PCC. Thepercentage of recycled content (%RC) is the overall proportion of recycled material used tomanufacture the product, which may include post-industrial discards. The percentage of post-consumer content (%PCC) is the proportion of recycled material used to manufacture the productwhich has already served its intended purpose and would have otherwise been discarded as solidwaste. An N/R placed in the %RC column means the company did not record the percentage ofrecycled content on their questionnaire.
Company names and detailed information can be found for each manufacturer in the companyinformation index (pages 20-39). Distributor information not otherwise included in the productlisting section may be obtained by contacting the manufacturer.
Some products such as pallets and printer toner cartridges listed in the directory are remanufactured. When a product is remanufactured, the item is either refilled or repaired with new or used parts.

WHY BUY RECYCLED PRODUCTS?The familiar recycling symbol of three chasing arrows represents the three steps involved inrecycling: 1) collection and processing, 2) manufacturing, and 3) buying recycled products.
All three of the activities must be completed to close the recycling loop and makerecycling a viable alternative to waste disposal. Buying products with recycled contentestablishes demand for these products, stimulates recycling markets, and supportscommunity collection programs. Increased demand for recycled products provides incentivefor manufacturers to use higher quantities of recycled feedstocks, which in turn reduces theproduction costs for recycled-content items.
There are five basic reasons why buying products with recycled material benefits theenvironment and North Carolina communities:
1. CONSERVATION OF RESOURCES AND LANDFILL SPACE:
Recent data characterizing the recycling infrastructure in North Carolina support the needto increase the procurement of recycled products by businesses, industry, government, andthe general public. Using more recycled material in manufacturing increases recovery ofrecyclables, and reduces dependency on landfills and incinerators, in turn helping NorthCarolina to reach its waste reduction goals.
2. REDUCTION OF WASTE AND POLLUTION:
Collecting, processing, transporting, and manufacturing new products with recycledfeedstocks creates less air and water pollution and less solid waste than making the sameproducts from virgin material. Overall, recycled products generate less pollution during themanufacturing process than comparable virgin products.1
3. JOB CREATION:
The Institute for Local Self-Reliance in Washington, D.C., estimates that nine jobs arecreated for every 15,000 tons of solid waste recycled into a new product. In North Carolina, recycling has lead to a net creation of jobs. For every 100 jobs created by recycling, only 13jobs were lost in solid waste and virgin material extraction sectors. The industry supportsmore than 8,800 jobs within the state.2
4
4. CONSERVES ENERGY:
Energy savings from manufacturing with recycled material can be substantial. Recyclingreduces energy consumption by a factor of three when compared to virgin production andeventual disposal of products (even assuming waste-to-energy disposal methods areemployed). According to a report published by DPPEA in September 1997, the recycling ofbottles and cans by North Carolina local government programs helped save 1.31 billion Btuof energy in fiscal year 1995-1996.3 Conserving energy reduces the nations dependency onnon-renewable energy resources and the pollution generated from the extraction andconsumption of these resources.
5. IMPROVED COMPETITIVENESS:
Research suggests that as companies and industries use more recycled material in theirproducts, they become more efficient and competitive in the global marketplace. Ananalysis conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that increasedpaper recycling will extend U.S. fiber resources and contribute to enhanced competitivenessfor the U.S. pulp and paper industry. Heightened competitiveness, according to the USDA,could increase export and decrease import of pulp and paper products and significantlyimprove the U.S. balance of trade.4

TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS
RECYCLABLE MATERIAL: Material capable of being recycled that otherwise would beprocessed or disposed of as solid waste.
RECYCLED CONTENT (RC): Recycled material used to manufacture a product. FederalTrade Commission guidelines only allow recycled content claims that include materialrecovered or otherwise diverted from the solid waste steam, either during themanufacturing process (pre-consumer) or after consumer use (post-consumer).
POST-CONSUMER CONTENT (PCC): Recycled material used to manufacture a productgenerated by businesses or households, that has served its intended use and hasbeen diverted or recovered from solid waste destined for disposal. Post-consumermaterial does not include waste generated by the manufacturing process.
PRE-CONSUMER WASTE: (Also known as post-industrial) Wastes typically generatedin the production stages of manufacturing, which may include scrap, trimmings, offcuts overruns, and damaged products.
VIRGIN MATERIALS: Any feedstock used in industrial processing or manufacturingthat has been produced from a raw material and that has not been previously used.
PLASTIC ABBREVIATIONS:
Plastics are categorized by resin type into seven industry categories. Each category andresin type is designated by a number inside the recycling symbol on the bottom of beverageand food containers, bags, and other plastic products.
