The U.S. House of Representatives has passedthe Deborah Sampson Act by a 399-11 vote, requiring greater oversight of women's healthcare in the Department of Veterans Affairs. Thebill would create a new office of Women'sHealth at the VA, extending coverage ofhealthcare for newborn children of veterans, aswell as access for female veterans experienc-ing post-traumatic stress disorder, sexualtrauma, and homelessness. Approval by theSenate and signing by the President are stillnecessary before the Act becomes a law.

Deborah Sampson (1760-1827) was born inPlympton, Massachusetts and fought in theRevolutionary War.

Sampson's first attempt to join the Army wasfoiled in 1782 when she was recognized despiteher men's clothing. Later that same year,Sampson again dressed as a man and enlisted

Deborah Sampson Act Closer to Realityas “Robert Shirtliff”, joining the Light InfantryCompany of the 4th Massachusetts Regiment. Anelite troop, the Light Infantry Companies weretaller and stronger than the average soldiers.

In her first battle, Sampson was wounded bytwo musket balls to the thigh, and a cut on herforehead. Despite her injuries, Sampson tried toavoid being brought to the doctor where shefeared her gender would be discovered. How-ever, Sampson left the hospital as soon as herhead wound was treated, and removed one ofthe musket balls herself with a penknife and sew-

ing needle. Her leg never fully healed with a musket ball

left in her leg, too deep to reach by herself. In1783 Sampson fell ill, and a doctor discoveredher secret. She was honorably discharged with-out reprimand.

In later years, and at times with the help ofher friend, Paul Revere, Sampson did receivepay that had been withheld because she was awoman, eventually winning petitions for a mili-tary pension, and an increase as an “invalid sol-dier” due to her injuries incurred in battle.
