Petco To Close Rhinelander “Foster and Smith” Operations
By KEN KRALL & WJFW TV
(Rhinelander)--Petco has announced the closing of most of it's operations at Drs. Foster and
Smith pet supply company in Rhinelander on February 12. Petco told employees at Rhinelander
of the closing on Wednesday. Petco will permanently close all operations in Rhinelander. About
289 full- and part-time employees work at Drs. Foster and Smith. Petco bought Drs. Foster and
Smith in early 2015. It most recently cut 17 pharmacy jobs. In a statement to WXPR, Petco
officials said they made the difficult decision to close the business in February.
The company says the needs of modern pet parents, shifting consumer preferences and an
ongoing evolution of the Petco brand led to the closing. Employees last days of employment will
vary from 60 to 120 days. Officials say the employees have been notified of the closing and will
be provided severance and transition support. Petco officials say they will work with Rhinelander
officials to provide outplacement programming for those impacted in February.
A statement from Petco headquarters:
Petco today announced that we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Drs.
Foster and Smith (DFS) business based in Rhinelander, Wis., on February 12, 2019. Taking into
account the needs of modern pet parents, shifting consumer preferences and the ongoing evolution
of the Petco brand, we believe this will enable us to streamline operations and better focus on our
core business and customer. This change affects 289 employees, with their last days of employment
varying over the next 60 to 120 days – all have been notified and will be provided severance and
transition support. This decision has not been an easy one, nor has it been made lightly, and we
appreciate that it has a very real effect on both individuals and the broader community in
Rhinelander. In an effort to help, we’re committed to working with local officials to provide ample
outplacement programming for those impacted starting in February. We greatly appreciate all of our
partners for their dedicated service and contributions to Drs. Foster and Smith and to Petco.
ZAHP Update: Virulent Newcastle Disease
Tue, 8 Jan 2019 17:43:53 -0500 (EST)
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the detection of Virulent Newcastle Disease (VND) in a commercial layer flock in Riverside County, California. This is a
continuation of the outbreak that started in southern California in May of 2018.
Virulent Newcastle Disease is not a food safety concern so properly cooked poultry products are safe
to eat.In very rare instances, people working directly with sick birds can become infected. Symptoms
are usually very mild, and limited to conjunctivitis and/or influenza-like symptoms. Infection is easily
prevented by using standard personal protective equipment.
According to Dr. Jonathan Sleeman of the National Wildlife Health Center, the strain currently
circulating in southern California is distinct from strains identified earlier in cormorants in the Great
Lakes, and the strain affecting rock doves in Texas.
To our knowledge, this California strain has not been detected in birds other than poultry, but it is
unknown how timely the sharing of surveillance information will be with the current government
shutdown. This virus is highly adapted to gallinaceous birds. It is not known if gallinaceous birds other
than chickens are equally affected. This could impact gallinaceous birds in breeding and exhibition
settings.
What this means for our community
Exhibitors, bird breeders and owners should carefully examine their biosecurity protocols, and
heightened biosecurity measures may be appropriate. Guidance on biosecurity for VND can be found
on the California Department of Agriculture’s website. Additional information on biosecurity for all
poultry flocks can be found on USDA’s Defend the Flock Resource Center.
Since the spread of this virus from one facility to another is still under investigation, you must consider
multiple possible routes of infection. It is very important to ensure that any of your staff or volunteers
monitor the health of their own birds, and report sick or dead birds promptly:
State Bird Hotline 1-866-922-2473
USDA toll free number 1-866-536-7593
Additional backgroundprovided by USDA email
Virulent Newcastle Disease is a contagious and fatal viral disease affecting the respiratory, nervous
and digestive systems of birds and poultry. The disease is so virulent that many birds and poultry die
without showing any clinical signs. A death rate of almost 100 percent can occur in unvaccinated
poultry flocks. Virulent Newcastle Disease can infect and cause death even in vaccinated poultry.
Clinical signs of Virulent Newcastle Disease include: sudden death and increased death loss in the
flock; sneezing; gasping for air; nasal discharge; coughing; greenish, watery diarrhea; decreased
activity; tremors; drooping wings; twisting of the head and neck; circling; complete stiffness; and
swelling around the eyes and neck.

Valentine Strawberry Coconut Bird Cake
Your parrot is going to be your very special Valentine when you serve up this yummy Valentine Bird
Cake.
Ingredients:
1 package Bird Bread Mix
2 large eggs
1 and 1/3 cup water
2 tablespoons olive oil or Red Palm Oil
One 5 ounce size packages of unsweetened flaked coconut
1 large container fresh strawberries
One round, or heart shaped, pan for baking. Wash strawberries and cut stems and set aside.(Remove leaves before serving to bird) Remove 1/2 cup coconut from bag and set aside. In large mixing bowl add package of Bird Bread mix, eggs, oil, and the 1/2 cup coconut, and water, and mix together all ingredients until well blended. Pour mixture into round lightly sprayed cake pan and bake at 375 for approximately 40 minutes. Ovens vary so check for doneness with toothpick or butter knife that comes out clean when inserted into cake. Allow cake to cool some on cake rack or plate. Once cake is only warm to the touch, take remaining coconut and begin applying on the sides and top of cake. Press into sides of cake lightly. Once coconut decorates cake, add whole strawberries or strawberry slices to decorate as you wish. Makes a yummy fruity bird cake for any size bird or parrot. Cake can also be frozen in serving size baggies or containers for daily use if you wish.
