AAAS receipts for 1962 exceeded
income by $204,932. This amount isexclusive of grants for special purposesand of dividends and other income fromthe investment account, which are dis-cussed later in this report. The Asso-ciation's receipts came from the follow-ing sources (all figures have beenrounded to the nearest whole dollar):

In addition to the $204,932 bywhich receipts exceeded costs, the tableof expenses shows that the Associationset aside $34,811 as a depreciation al-lowance on building and equipment.
Comparison of 1962 with 1961
Receipts in 1962 were $335,973greater than in 1961. The major itemsaccounting for this difference were in-creases in receipts from members' dues($48,000), nonmember subscriptionsto Science ($11,000), and sale of ad-vertising in Science ($304,000). How-ever, there was a decrease of $17,000in the receipts from the sale of sym-posium volumes.
Expenses for the year exceeded ex-
penses for 1961 by $349,927. The larg-est increases were in the printing andediting of Science ($179,000), thecost of selling advertising in Science($76,000), the expenses of the an-
nual meeting ($13,000), and the ex-
penses of some of the Association'scommittees ($11,000); in addition, theAssociation assumed some costs ofwork on science education that inearlier years had been supported bygrants. The cost of symposium volumessold was $10,000 less in 1962 than in1961.The excess of receipts over expenses
was $13,954 less in 1962 than in 1961.
Grants Administered during 1962
At the beginning of 1962, the Asso-ciation held a balance of $262,137 re-
maining from various grants receivedearlier. During the year this amountwas augmented by $778,549 in new
grants and contracts and additionalpayments under prior existing ones. Ex-
penditures amounted to $595,984, leav-ing a balance of unexpended grant andcontract funds of $444,703 at the endof the year.The year 1962 saw the termination
of support by the Carnegie Corpora-tion of the Association's Science Teach-ing Improvement Program. A grant of$300,000 in 1955 and 3 years later agrant of $250,000, each to be ex-pended over a 3-year period, enabledthe Association to expand greatly itsactivities in the field of improving sci-ence teaching. Work in this area willcontinue, partly supported by Associa-tion funds and partly by grants forspecial purposes. We are greatly in-debted to the Carnegie Corporation forthe generous support that enabled usto develop a competent staff and aprogram of activities in the field ofscience teaching improvement.As it had since 1955, the National
Science Foundation continued to sup-port the traveling school libraries ofscience books. The final year for thehigh school science program ended inJune of 1962. The traveling elementaryschool library continues, as does thepublication of annotated lists of sciencebooks suitable for different age groups.Expenditures under this programamounted to $140,350 during the year.The National Science Foundation
made a grant of $125,000 (of which$100,412 was expended during theyear) to support the work of theCommission on Science Education, tohold conferences on the improvementof science teaching in the elementarygrades, and to work toward the devel-opment of new teaching materials forscience instruction in the early grades.
Another grant from the NationalScience Foundation of $115,900 (ofwhich $86,245 was spent during theyear) supported a series of nine re-gional conferences, jointly planned bythe National Science Foundation, theUnited States Office of Education, andthe AAAS, to acquaint school super-intendents and principals with scienceinstructional materials in biology,chemistry, physics, and other sciences,produced under grants from the Na-tional Science Foundation and othersources for programs to improve coursecontent.An NSF grant of $70,000 (of which
$46,843 was used) supported for 1962the program of bringing to the UnitedStates mathematicians and scientistsfrom other countries to lecture, conductseminars, and hold informal discus-sions with teachers attending a number

of the summer institutes for scienceand mathematics teachers.
Under a contract with the NationalScience Foundation, $42,924 was spentto convene panels of judges and forother costs of screening and selectinghigh school science and mathematicsteachers who had been recommendedto the National Science Foundation toreceive fellowships to enable them topursue graduate work in their teach-ing fields.Two grants supported a cooperative
program of studies by the NationalAssociation of State Directors of Teach-er Education and Certification and theAAAS. Under a grant from the Car-negie Corporation of New York, $40,-418 was spent in continuing a study ofthe education in science desirable forscience teachers. Earlier work had con-centrated on secondary school teachersand resulted in publication of a set ofguidelines for the education of pro-spective high school teachers of scienceand mathematics. During 1962 theseguidelines were formally adopted byseveral states and a number of collegesand universities. During 1962 emphasisunder this program was shifted to anexamination of science education de-sirable for elementary school teachers.Under a National Science Foundation
grant, $5968 was spent in bringingclose to conclusion a study of theeducation, subject-matter preparation,and some other characteristics of asample of persons teaching science andmathematics in the nation's secondaryschools. A report of this study will bepublished by the National ScienceFoundation.The Holiday Science Lecture Pro-
gram, which was started in 1961, con-tinued in 1962, with series of lecturesgiven for invited audiences of superiorhigh school students in Cincinnati andChicago by Rene Dubos; in Boston byLyman Craig, Stanford Moore, andWilliam Stein; in New York by MarkKac; and in Seattle by Paul Weiss. Ex-penses for the year amounted to $28,-829 and were borne by a grant fromthe National Science Foundation.A National Science Foundation grant
of $10,470 (of which $8117 wasspent) enabled the Association to starta study of the role and acti9ities ofjunior and collegiate academies of sci-ence.
All of the above grants fall in thegeneral area of science education. Othergrants supported activities for scientists.Expenditures of $1529 from a grant

from the Asia Foundation provided anumber of scientists from Asian coun-tries with AAAS memberships orhelped to pay their expenses in attend-ing AAAS meetings.A grant of $40,000 (of which $19,-
135 was spent during the year) startedthe Committee on Desert and AridZones Research on a major review andanalysis of U.S. research on the utiliza-tion of arid lands.The Association supplied administra-
tive support to the National ScienceFoundation in handling the expensesof the joint United States-Japan Com-mittee on Scientific Cooperation. Ex-penses during the year amounted to$12,972.
In cooperation with 12 scientific andengineering societies, the AAAS be-gan a weekly television program overstation WNDT, the educational televi-sion station of New York City, directedspecifically to scientists and engineers.Expenses were shared by the affiliatedsocieties, the Association, and the tele-vision station, and were partly borneby a grant from the National ScienceFoundation, of which $8111 was spentduring the year.
In the field of improving public un-derstanding of science, a grant fromthe Westinghouse Foundation of $7500supported the two annual awards forexcellence of science writing and thecosts of selecting the awardees andmanaging the program.At the end of the year, the Asso-
ciation received $85,000 from the Al-fred P. Sloan Foundation, representingthe first portion of a 3-year grant tosupport a variety of activities intendedto improve the quality and increase thequantity of science presented on net-work television. Only a relatively smallamount ($5194) was spent in 1962.
Investment Account
At the end of 1962, the Associationheld in its investment account securitieswith a quoted market price of $1,210,-l11-a figure $56,367 above the costbut $12,631 less than the market valueat the beginning of the year. Investmentswere divided as follows:

The total includes $54,574 held forinvestment on behalf of the Gordon Re-search Conferences, Inc., and $553,578of unallocated reserve. The remainderrepresents the Association's severalsmall endowment funds.
During the year the Association re-ceived $41,718 in dividends and intereston these investments and realized again of $3843 on the sale and exchangeof securities. The dividend and interestincome represented a yield of about 3.8percent on the average market valuethrough the year and of 4 percent onthe amount of money that had been in-vested in the purchase of securities.The dividends and interest were dis-

Net worth increased during 1962 by$156,423. This gain resulted from anexcess of receipts over expenditures andan increase of $69,525 in the appraisedvalue of the land on which the Asso-ciation's headquarters building stands.A partially offsetting factor was a de-crease in market value of a number ofthe securities held in the Association'sportfolio.
The 1962 accounts have not yet beenreviewed by G. P. Graham and Com-pany, certified public accountants, whoannually audit the Association's records.Experience indicates that the auditor'sreview will result in a few changes, at-tributable chiefly to the fact that therewill be several additional items of in-come or expense that were applicableto 1962 but that were not availablewhen this report was prepared. Experi-ence also indicates that changes result-ing from the audit are unlikely to belarge enough to alter any of the figuresto a material degree. If this should notbe the case, corrections will be includedin the annual financial report for 1963.
