P. 41-52

“The Architects’ papers are a curious mixture.

-Nelson Goodman-”

NELSON GOODMANwas an American philosopher, known for his work on counterfactuals, metrology, the problem of induction, irrealism, and aesthetics.

(7 August 1906 - 25 November 1998)

A series or system of written s y m b o l s u s e d t o re p re s e n t numbers, amounts, or elements in something such as music or mathematics.

NOTATION

The abstraction of notation is instrumental, and not an end itself.“”Map of Rome, Luigi Vagnetti, 1450,

Reconstructed Following the Text of Alberti’s Descriptio rubies Romae

DIAGRAMIllustration compared to the idea of an illustration or picture it is useful by way of expressing abstract ideas and concepts.

DIAGRAMS VS NOTATION

All notations are diagrammatic, but not all diagrams are notational….Notations belong to time, diagrams to space and organisation.

“”

AUTOGRAPHIC VS ALLOGRAPHIC ART FORMS Architecture is neither one of the other, but a combination.

”“ -Stan Allen-

AUTOGRAPHICDefined with the assumption that there is value in the original, and the authenticity depends on the direct contact with the author.

An example of this would be with paintings and sculpture.

Diana at the bath by dutch painter &etcher, Rembrandt, 1631

ALLOGRAPHICCapable of being reproduced at a distance from the author by means of notation.

Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus. Quartet, strings, K. 387, G major. (London: L.

Lavenu, circa 1797).

An example of this would be in music. Notation, which musicians interpret and understand through a learned convention can be performed and create new realities

“Diagrams are an explanatory device to communicate or clarify form, structure, or program; or as a graphic assemblage that specifies relationships between activity and form.
