What is Speech? What is Language?
Speech pathologists are often asked to explain what the difference is between
speech and language. Speech is the way we pronounce sounds in words.
Language is how we join words together to make sentences and use these
sentences to communicate our ideas. Having good vocabulary and spoken
language is important for children when they are learning to read. By the time,
a child starts school they usually have about 2,000 words or more in their
vocabulary. If they have problems using language, it can affect their ability to
participate in classroom activities.
Here are some fun ways to encourage your child to learn new words and use
them in conversation.
Next time you’re in the car try some of these:
Play a game of categories. In this game, one player chooses a category
(e.g. animals) and each player takes turns naming an item in the category.
If a player is unable to name a new item, they are out.
Rhyme time. Similar to categories, try using rhyming words instead. For
example, the first player says “tree” the next person may say “key”, “bee”
and so forth.
Eye Spy: what car trip wouldn’t be completed without a game of eye spy.

the students came together every Thursday afternoon to
participate in their choice of activity. Last week we had a whole
Stage assembly where we shared and celebrated our learning

our last three week rotation of new activities.

Stage 3 Personal Learning Projects This term in PDHPE the Stage 3 students have identified two personal goals that they would like to work on. The first was a value that they would like to further develop
within themselves and the second was a project that they would like to do that would support them to
develop this value. The students have then worked together in different
groups to support each other to achieve their personal goals.
There has been a group that have worked together to learnt the rules of basketball and work on how they interact and
support each other as a group. There was another group who worked on developing their confidence with singing, a third
group who worked together to develop a dance, another group that looked at developing healthy eating habits and
cooked different recipes each week, a group that developed and refined their soccer skills and a group that looked at developing initiatives to support the school community.
The effort, dedication and persistence of the students when engaging with these projects has been inspiring. Next week we
will have a Stage assembly to share our achievements with each other.
