NOW YOU KNOW

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan

The seventh Secretary-General of the

United Nations (UN), Kofi Atta Annan was a diplomat of Ghana. Joining in 1962, he worked for the World Health Organization

in Geneva, Switzerland and several capacities within the UN, before being

appointed Secretary-General December 13, 1996. Later confirmed by the

Security Council, Annan was the first black man to hold the office and the first

Secretary-General to be chosen from within the UN ranks.

His agenda was to shape global politics

by promoting peace, fighting poverty, HIV/AIDS and global warming. During his

tenure, he negotiated directly with Saddam Hussein over UN weapons

inspections before the invasion of Iraq, despite incurring sharp criticism for the

meeting. Although divided on the matter, he and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met to discuss Iran’s

nuclear program. Annan also worked to improve women’s rights among several

Middle-Eastern countries.

In 2001, both Annan and the UN were co-recipients for the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in giving priority to human

rights. Annan retired from his post in December 2006 but continued his work

for a fairer and more peaceful world through the Kofi Annan Foundation, an independent non-profit organization.

Sadly, Kofi Annan passed away Saturday, August 18, 2018 after a brief illness.
