MISSISSIPPI INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING
NURSING EDUCATION
Nursing education in Mississippi is regulated by the Board of Trustees of
State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) for registered nurse (RN)
programs at the Associate, Baccalaureate, Master and Doctoral degree
educational levels (Miss. Code [1991 Supp.] § 37-129-1, et seq.). The
Mississippi Community College Board (MCCB) regulates the practical
nursing programs in the state.
Registered nursing programs in Mississippi must be state approved and
nationally accredited by one of two national, non-profit accrediting bodies,
Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and
Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). National
accreditation of nursing programs is desirable because of the quality of
standards, emphasis placed on outcomes, and importance in the national
marketplace for recruiting faculty and students.
The Nursing Education Opportunities in Mississippi publication, developed in
partnership between IHL Nursing Education and the Mississippi Council of
Deans and Directors of Schools of Nursing (MCDDSN), provides a snapshot
of the state’s twenty-three Schools of Nursing and the types of programs
offered. Geographically located throughout the state, the nursing schools
provide those who are interested in pursuing a career in nursing the
opportunity to attend a college or university near home.
For additional information, please visit the IHL Nursing Education website
http://www.mississippi.edu/nursing/ or the MCCB website

Janette S. McCrory, DNP, RN

Dear Nurse of the Future,
On behalf of the Mississippi Council of Deans and Directors of Schools of

rewarding choices that encompass autonomous and collaborative patient care
for all ages, families, communities, and settings. I am especially pleased that
you are exploring such opportunities right here in the great state of
Mississippi.
The Nursing Education Opportunities in Mississippi publication provides you,
as a future nurse, with a comprehensive overview of the many different
nursing programs throughout our state. Basic information is provided related
to practical (PN), associate (ADN), baccalaureate (BSN), master (MSN), and

NURSING EDUCATION IN MISSISSIPPI
There are six types of nursing programs in Mississippi. Two types of programs prepare
graduates to be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered
Nurses (NCLEX-RN ®). These are the Associate Degree Nursing Programs and the
Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Programs. Practical Nursing Programs prepare graduates to
be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses
(NCLEX-PN ®). A fourth program provides nurses with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
The fifth program in Mississippi prepares nurses with a Doctor of Philosophy Degree
(Ph.D.) in Nursing. The sixth and newest nursing education program in Mississippi prepares
nurses with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
The associate degree programs are located in 15 community or junior colleges and two
public universities. The eight baccalaureate degree programs are located in five public
universities and three private universities/colleges. Five of the six master’s degree program,
two of the three Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nursing and four of the Doctor of Nursing
Practice (DNP) programs are located in public universities. The 6th master’s degree
program and 3rd PhD in nursing program is located in a private university (Table I). In
addition to the academic programs, the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of
Nursing is an approved CE provider.
The title Registered Nurse (RN) means that a person has graduated from an approved
School of Nursing, passed the national licensing examination for registered nurses and paid
a fee to practice within the state. The parameters of practice are set by law, and the control
of practice is vested with the Mississippi Board of Nursing. A person may not use the title
RN or practice as a nurse until the licensing examination is passed.
The state accreditation of degree programs of nursing in Mississippi is vested by state law
in the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. State accreditation of a
nursing program is necessary for a graduate of that program to be eligible to take the
licensing examination for RNs. State accreditation in nursing education aims to protect the
autonomy and individuality of the various educational programs it serves, to provide
accountability for the protections of public against ill-prepared nurses, and to assist in the
transfer of students and graduates form one program to another. In order to accomplish this
mission, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning has established
“Mississippi Nursing Degree Programs Accreditation Standards”, which all nursing
programs must meet. The criteria established by the Board of Trustees for admission into
nursing programs are found in Tables II, III and IV. These are minimal criteria and
some schools may have standards which are higher. The standards of each school will
befound in its school catalog. Movement from one level of nursing to a higher level is
possible through articulation. Articulation is the process by which a person with one level
of licensure or education is facilitated in the advancement of licensure or educational
6
credentials. It is possible within the state of Mississippi for LPNs to obtain their RN license
and for RNs to obtain a baccalaureate, master’s degree, and doctoral degree. For specific
information regarding articulation policies and procedures, contact individual colleges or
universities listed in this brochure.
Practical nursing programs are located in public community/junior colleges and one
private college. All of the community/junior colleges which have associate degree nursing
programs also have practical nursing programs. Practical nursing programs are under the
supervision of the Mississippi Community College Board. Inquiries concerning these
programs should be directed to that office. Admission criteria for practical nursing
programs are located in Table V.

MISSISSIPPI NURSE OF THE FUTURE COMPETENCY MODEL
The Mississippi Nurse of the Future Competency Model is the culmination of a collaborative
effort of many nursing leaders in the state and one outcome of the Mississippi Council of Deans
and Directors of Schools of Nursing (MCDDSN) Education Redesign Taskforce (ERTF)
initiative. The 2011 adoption of this model demonstrates the MCDDSN’s most recent
implementation of a successful model that def ines core competencies for entry-level
nursing practice. The MCDDSN is committed to continuous quality improvement in nursing
education, including preparing nurses of the future with competencies for effective nursing
practice and leadership to advance health care.
In 1997, Mississippi was one of the first states to develop and adopt a competency model. The
desired outcomes of this model were to enhance the education and practice of Mississippi nurses,
facilitate articulation across nursing education programs, and assist employers in understanding
the differences in expected skill sets based on educational degrees. Competencies were identified
according to roles of nurses with varying educational backgrounds encompassing LPN, ADN,
BSN, and MSN preparation. In 2002, the Mississippi Competency Model was revised to include
PhD competencies. Schools of nursing have used the Model as a basis for designing curricula
and policies to improve the articulation among educational programs and upward mobility in
nurses in Mississippi.
The MCDDSN Strategic Plan for Education Redesign, developed in 2009 and updated annually,
provides the framework and guidance for Mississippi’s continued work to address the changing
demographics and societal needs for nursing and healthcare in an increasingly complex
healthcare environment. The Strategic Plan depicts nursing education priorities, resources
needed, short-term and long-term outcomes. One track of work emanating from the 2010
strategic plan was the appointment of the Education Redesign Task Force (ERTF), charged with:
1. Updating the MS Competency Model with core competencies for the nurse of the
future;
2. Reviewing best practice models for curriculum redesign;
3. Creating models for seamless academic progression across education levels, and;
4. Facilitating voluntary implementation of a state-wide curriculum model that
integrates essential competencies for nursing practice.
The ERTF brought together statewide stakeholders in nursing education and practice to review
national recommendations and guidelines for nursing practice, national nursing education
accreditation standards and other state competency models. The initial review by stakeholders
spearheaded focus group sessions among practice partners to identify gaps between the 1997
competencies and core competencies for future nursing practice. The outcome of the critical
analysis of existing documents and stakeholder meetings led to the eventual adoption of the Nurse
25
of the Future Nursing Core Competencies© (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education
Nursing Initiative, 2010) as the Mississippi Nursing Competency Model: Nurse of the Future
Nursing Core Competencies, to replace the existing 2002 model.
The MS Nursing Competency Model identifies the ten Nurse of the Future (NOF) Nursing Core
Competencies and the knowledge, attitudes and skills associated with each. The competencies
are designed to guide curriculum development and implementation in pre- licensure nursing
programs. The model provides the foundation for further development of depth and scope of the
competencies for advanced nursing practice at the master’s and doctoral levels. To download a
copy of the Mississippi Nursing Competency Model: Nurse of the Future Nursing Core
Competencies, go to http://www.iteachnursingms.org/
