• USDOE arranges $1.4 billion loan to Nissan– convert its TN manufacturing facility to produce

• 150,000 all-electric Leaf five passenger sedans in 2012 • 200,000 battery packs in 2012

• USDOE awards eTec a $99.8 million contract– install 11,000 charging station in 11 cities to

support 4700 Nissan vehicles• Electrification Coalition, supported by 13

major corporations, recommends– concentrate effort in six major regions– create fleets of 100,000 to 150,000 all-electric

vehicles

acquire fleets of Leaf vehicles– 56,000 orders received

• Hertz announces it will include the Nissan Leaf in its fleets

• McKinsey’s study for plaNYC suggests individuals will be early adopters for all-electric vehicles

• NRG Energy/Reliant Energy/Nissan program – 1,000 all-electric vehicles in three Texas cities

• Nissan Leaf range 100 miles but announced second generation Leaf will have increased range– rumored at 189 miles

NYC’s Situation

• NYC’s economy is uniquely dependent on fleets of vehicles

• Electrifying these fleets will achieve the following:– Establish all-electric vehicle fleets in a few years– Charge the vehicles with a reasonable number of fast

charge Level 3 charging stations – Substantially reduce use of petroleum-derived fuels– Reduce City’s operating and maintenance expenses– Demonstrate to the public the advantages of electrification– Establish the foundation for individual electrification efforts – Provide the basis for grid energy storage to supplement the

smart grid effort

Charging Stations

• Choice of charging station, and cost, depends on vehicle application– Personal station – Level 1 (120 volt, 16 amp)

• low cost, 8+ hours charging for light duty vehicle

– Small public station – Level 2 (240 volt, 32 amp)• higher cost, 2+ hours charging for multiple sedans and

medium duty vehicles

– Large public station – DC Fast Charge (440 volt, 600-1000 amp)

• high cost, 10 to 25 minutes charging for all vehicle types and fleet vehicles

Commercial Considerations

• Publicly held battery manufacturers will guarantee battery performance

• Grid frequency regulation with vehicle batteries has the potential to realize income for the battery owner– US Post Office estimates 1000 all-electric delivery vehicle

will earn $2,304,000 annually in the PJM region

• Charging stations provide the opportunity to use vehicle batteries for energy storage

• Investors have expressed interest in – owning and leasing school bus batteries– owning and maintaining the Level 3 charging stations– supplying a lease package of station, vehicle, maintenance

and service

• DC Fast Charge Charging Station– AeroVironment PosiCharge AV-250– Connected to So. Cal Edison 12 kv high voltage

transmission line– Draws three phase 440 volt 1000 amp for 5 to 10 minutes

• Proterra’s Energy Transfer Storage Module developed for when high voltage connections are not available – Charges continuously at the rate of 60 kw/hr– Feeds the charging station that is fast charging the bus– FTA has funded the demonstration of the Proterra Energy

Federal Funding

• 2009– USDOE Nissan loan of $1.4 billion– USDOE Transportation Electrification - $300 million (50%

match required)• ETec awarded $99.8 million for an 11 city project, consisting of

10.950 Level 2 and 260 fast charge systems

– USDOT Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction - $100 million (no match required)

• San Antonio Metropolitan Transit awarded $5 million for 3 Proterra fast charge transit buses and charging stations

– Many billions of dollars provided to battery manufacturers – USDOT TIGER - $1.5 billion (no match required)

• Funded infrastructure projects only

eTec/Nissan Eleven City Project

• eTec– Involved with every major EV project since 1998– Installed 5500 charging stations– Prepared 2008 DOE report on charging stations

• EV Project - $200 millon (50% grant), 5 states 11 cities, 40 project partners– Install 10,950 Level 2 and 260 Level 3 charging

stations – Collect and analyze data in diverse conditions for

4700 vehicles – Develop mature charging environment to support

wide spread use of EV

eTec EV Micro-Climate Program

• Develop a road map for a region– Determine potential for EV vehicles– Prepare cost projections,

recommendations, and action plan• Prepare proposals and assist in funding• Implement the road map, develop the

infrastructure, and procure and install equipment

• Train stakeholders, first responders, and educate the public

• Provide maintenance, and continuing service.

• AWP&H – Represents Proterra in the Northeast US– Developed concept and prepared proposal

for Newark to submit to USDOT TIGER funding opportunity - $76 million proposal for 50 fast charge battery electric transit buses and 14 Level 3 charging stations for NJ/NY metro region transit operators

• USDOT did not grant TIGER funds to any bus projects

• Proposal will be resubmitted in 2010
