variation of theft. Do you understand that?“ (Hosseini 29).

Examine the actions of Amir throughout the novel. Choose a “sin” he is guilty of

Outer Circle – From Now On!

• Comment #1: Describe something they did well:

• Comment #2: Describe something they could work on for next time:

• List 3 questions you would like to ask in the “inner circle,” in case you don’t get there:

Set-up for Fishbowl

» Final FB group, please take the seats in the center circle

» Have your book & your study guide

» Have a pencil /pen to jot notes if you get ideas of things to say

Chapter 21

» Farid comments to Amir, as Amir looks at his old home, that it is easier to move forward if you can forget the past.

DISCUSS:

» Discuss the events in the Ghazi Stadium…. What was your reaction to these events?

» Who is the Taliban official???

Chapters 20-22

» Discuss the trip into Kabul of Amir and Farid in detail:

• What do they see and experience?

• What is learned about characters such as Assef and Sohrab?

• Draw some parallels between Assef/Hassan, Hassan/Sohrab and Amir’s role in past and current events—any differences?

Why might a Taliban official purchase children???

» How do you see the theme of violence woven throughout

the novel in general?

»…throughout the final chapters?

Theme Discussion

Chapter 23

» Amir is in the hospital and learns some things from Rahim-discuss:

» Why is this quote ironic? Sohrab tells Amir that his father, Hassan, said Amir was

"the best friend he ever had“ Amir dreams “symbolically”– explain how these

dream items are “symbolic”: Baba marinating lamb; making love with Soraya; a trip to the strawberry fields in Jalalabad with Baba and Hassan; the blood dripping from Hassan's pants after the rape.

Chapter 24

The “Amir and Sohrab” Chapter

What do they discuss and share with each other?

What is the “big question” Amir asks Sohrab? Discuss the whole process of getting Sohrab to

America, including its problems How does this chapter end?????

Chapter 25

Sum up the final chapter and discuss the symbolism of the kite flying at the end:

When Amir asks Sohrab if he wants Amir to run the green kite for him, Amir thinks he sees Sohrab nod.

Before he takes off, Amir says to Sohrab, just like Hassan said all those years ago in Kabul, "For you, a

thousand times over“—discuss:

“For you a thousand times over…”
