SEATTLE, Washington The 48th edition of the
Professional Bowlers Association Tournament of Champions
will return to its traditional roots in March of 2013 when it
will feature an exclusive field featuring 48 PBA Tour champi-
ons plus any previous TOC winners who elect to participate.
The Tournament of Champions will be held at Woodland
Bowl in Indianapolis, March 26-31, concluding with a live
five-player stepladder final airing on ESPN.
Since its inception in 1962, the PBA Tournament of
Champions has gone through several adaptations given the
circumstances of the day and has maintained its unique
appeal. But for this year and moving forward we have con-cluded that the simple variables that made the TOC the PBAs
signature event should be restored, said PBA Commissioner
Tom Clark.
The two most important variables include returning the
Tournament of Champions to an elite field allowing the
drama of trying to qualify to unfold and utilizing a classic
PBA tournament format of 48 games with all entrants starting
on equal footing.
PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, who won the 1971
Firestone Tournament of Champions in Akron, Ohio, in his
first step toward completing the PBA Triple Crown, is pleased
with the return to an exclusive field.
This is wonderful news, Petraglia said. Im so happy. Im
a past champion and if Im allowed to bowl, Ill go even if I
dont think I have a chance to win.
Newly-inducted PBA Hall of Famer Jason Couch, the only
player to win the TOC three consecutive times, also likes the
decision.
I loved the old way when we had the bubble list every
week, Couch said. It was great to watch on television,
unless you were the guy on the bubble. I can certainly see
myself coming out of retirement to bowl in it.
The 2013 TOC will feature a core field of 48 players. To
make up that field, precedence goes to PBA national champi-ons who are Touring 1 or 2 players (those who bowled in at
least 60 percent of PBA Tour events last year). For the upcom-
ing season, 46 PBA Tour champions fall into that category.
Because there are 46, the remaining places on the roster will
be filled by the most current title winners who did not attain
touring player status last season. The current list (see below)
may change during the 2012-13 season. Any new champion
will bump the last eligible player Robert Smith is currently
on the bubble off the eligibility list.
Additionally, all former TOC champions have a lifetime
invitation to compete. Any past champions who currently are
not Touring Players (see below) who elect to enter would
increase the field to more than 48.
The 2013 Tournament of Champions will get underway on
Wednesday, March 27, with two eight-game qualifying
rounds. After a third eight-game round on Thursday, the top
24 players will advance to eight-game match play rounds
Thursday evening and Friday. The top five after 48 games
advance to Sundays ESPN finals. A pro-am program and the
PBA Hall of Fame induction dinner will highlight Saturdays
schedule.
First prize in the TOC will be $50,000. All players will cash.
Last place will pay $1,450.
The Tournament of Champions has provided many of themost memorable moments in PBA history the PBAs first
nationally-televised 300 by Jack Biondolillo in 1967, Don
Johnsons emotional 299 in the title match against Dick Ritger
in 1970, Kelly Kulicks historic victory for women in 2010,
Mika Koivuniemis 299 on his way to a record $250,000 prize
in 2011 are among many others.
The PBA Tournament of Champions has always provided
electric moments, Clark said. In 2013, we expect more of
that kind of drama: 48 champions, 48 games and live nation-
ally-televised finals with history riding on every ball. Its
going to be a great way to conclude the winter segment of our
2012-13 schedule.

October 24 - 30, 2012 SPORTS REPORTER 3
ARLINGTON, Texas - The United
States Bowling Congress and 900
Global have agreed on a sponsorship
deal making 900 Global the official
sponsor of the Showcase Lanes and
two new side tournaments being held
in conjunction with the 2013 USBC
Open and Women's Championships
in Reno, Nev.
The 900 Global Showcase Lanes
will give bowlers the chance to book
practice sessions on the tournament
lane conditions or get coaching tips
from a USBC Silver coach before
competing on the main champi-
onship lanes. The concept was intro-
duced at the 2012 Open
Championships in Baton Rouge, La.
For 2013, renovations to the
ground floor of the National Bowling
Stadium will allow for 10 Showcase
Lanes, compared to four lanes at the
Baton Rouge River Center in 2012.
The additional capacity means
more opportunities for bowlers to
practice and compete while in the
Biggest Little City in the World.
Competitors from both the Open and
Women's Championships will be
able to hone their skills on the exact
lane conditions they'll face at their
respective tournaments.
Traditionally, the lane conditions
for the Open and Women's
Championships are posted on
BOWL.com and available to bowl-
ing centers across the country just
before the start of each tournament.
Matching the oil, lane machine, lane
surface and environment are proven
challenges, so being able to practice
on lanes maintained by the USBC
event staff, and so close to the tour-
nament action, will provide an
unmatchable opportunity.
The one-of-a-kind NBS will wel-
come more than 50,000 Open
Championships competitors, and
more than 25,000 bowlers will make
their way to the Reno-Sparks
Convention Center for the Women's
Championships. The 2013 Open
Championships will kick off March
1, and the Women's Championships
will start April 12.
Reservations are recommended for
bowlers wanting practice or coaching
sessions on the 900 Global Showcase
Lanes. The Open and Women's
Championships oil patterns both will
be available.
900 Global also will sponsor two
unique side events on the Showcase
Lanes at the NBS - the 900 Global
Two-Game Challenge and the Who's
Got the Look Baker Bonanza pre-
sented by 900 Global. The side
events will have their own lane con-
dition, and bowlers will be able to
compete anytime lanes are available
beginning at 11 a.m. Hours are sub-
ject to change.
As the presenting sponsor for the
Showcase Lanes and the side events,
900 Global also will have the oppor-
tunity to show off its product line.
For one hour in the morning (9:30-
10:30 a.m.) and one hour each after-
noon (1:30-2:30 p.m.) on the 900
Global Showcase Lanes, bowlers
will have the chance to learn about
and throw the newest 900 Global
balls free of charge.
"The Open and Women's
Championships are the two premier
events in bowling, and we are thrilled
to be able to have such a significant
presence at both upcoming tourna-
ments," said 900 Global's Dave
Smart. "The Showcase Lanes and
side events help create a fun and
competitive environment with a lot
of traffic, and we welcome the oppor-
tunity to promote our products and
help enhance the tournament experi-
ence for so many dedicated bowlers."
Pricing on the Showcase Lanes:
* $200: One-hour session with a
USBC Silver coach (based on avail-
ability)
* $100: One hour of practice for up
to 10 bowlers (no coach)

900 Global Showcase Lanes, visit

times, call (866) 977-7433 or email

4 SPORTS REPORTER October 24 - 30, 2012
SEATTLE, Washington The Professional Bowlers Associations experimental regional
animal pattern championship series has produced 35 paid entries into PBA World Series
of Bowling IV and a significant increase in the average number of entries in PBA Regional
tournaments between March and August of 2012, PBA Director of Regional and Senior
Tours John Weber announced.
The inaugural animal pattern series featured Cheetah, Viper, Scorpion and Chameleon
Championships in each of the PBAs seven regions (the Shark pattern, the fifth lane condi-
tion in the series, was not used in the first-year program). Each event offered an optional
entry program, allowing players who elected to do so to compete on specific lane condi-
tions for a paid World Series entry. In addition, the top player in overall competition points
in each region whether or not he paid the optional entry fees also received a World
Series entry.
The animal pattern program was introduced by the PBA during the 2008-09 season to
provide the bowling public with a method to easily differentiate between the variety of lane
conditioning challenges professional bowlers face. It has served as a central part of the
World Series of Bowling since the WSOBs inception in 2009, producing an annual series
of animal pattern championships. The animal patterns also are featured in the PBA
Experience Sport Bowling league program conducted by the United States Bowling
Congress, providing grassroots league and tournament bowlers opportunities to test their
skills on the same lane conditions used in PBA competition.
The new regional tournament series drew a total of 1,991 entries for 28 events an aver-
age of 71.1 entries per tournament which represents a nine percent increase compared to
entries in the more than 170 PBA Regional tournaments conducted over the past year. The
Cheetah events drew the highest number of entries in five of the seven regions while
Scorpion Championships drew the fewest entries in four of the seven regions.
