Hello Fogelsville Families,
I hope you all have adjusted to the school routine! The studentshave been doing a great job with our Fox Formula for Success ofbeing respectful, responsible, safe, and kind. Weve handed outnumerous Golden Tickets! We are just waiting to see who will bethe lucky ten students to fill out ten consecutive spaces on ourGolden Ticket Board.
Thank you for your cooperation with our non-edible birthdaytreat initiative. Weve had some very clever items come in tocelebrate birthdays other than sweets/food. One student sent in$1.00 coupons for the school store for each student. Contact thePTO if youd like to do this as well.
We have a very busy month of October coming up. We will haveour Halloween parade on October 26th at 2:15. Please be surecostumes are appropriate and in good taste for school. No toyweapons of any kind or fake blood are permitted. For securityreasons, the only parents that are allowed back into the buildingafter the parade are those parents that have been assigned tohelp with the parties by the classroom teacher. If you are notcomfortable with your child participating in these activities due to
religious reasons, please contact your childs teacher. We will havealternate activities in the library for those students.
Happy Fall!

Counselors Corner...by Helma Rosenthal, M.Ed.
It was so nice to see so many smiling faces at our September Open House thatits hard to believe that October is already here! Those of you who were able to attend heard all about ourSchool Wide Positive Behavior Support program in which we are focusing on teaching and spotting Re-spectful, Responsible, Kind, and Safe behaviors. In an article entitled, Why Civility Matters by Sara Hacala
the author reminds us that even though todays society looks very different from the one in which youand I grew up civility is a cornerstone of civilization and civilizations require the practice of good citizen-ship in order to survive. Civility helps us to nurture our very own sustainability as a species. She points outthat though we may never as an individual achieve national acclaim that, there is greatness in treat-
ing others with respect, compassion, kindness and generosity. That is our message to our students.
As you parent, remember to teach your child manners, respect, and empathy for others. These are skills thatwill help your child succeed throughout their lives as these skills are at the foundation of a childs lifelongability to make and keep friends, get along with co-workers, peacefully resolve conflicts, and understandthe perspectives of others. These skills are necessary for healthy relationships which is where much of your
childs future happiness will depend upon.
Balance your childs time in front of the many screens (computer, TV, etc.) that have begun to dominatemodern life. Social skills require practice and the connections that we have with each other cannot beduplicated by any program other than the human program. The research shows that we are simply wiredthat way. So engage your child in conversations about the importance of being nice to others and there is
no better month to do that than October since it is National Bullying Prevention Month.
What is considered bullying? A student is being bullied or victimized when he or she is exposed, repeat-edly and over time, to negative actions or intimidation on the part of one or more other students. The
student who is exposed to the negative actions has difficulty defending him or herself and is somewhat help-
less against the student or students who harass. Two key points of this definition are repeatedly and overtime and the idea that there is an imbalance of power. Studies have shown that roughly somewhere between20 and 30 percent of all children have either been bullied or have bullied others. The greatest amount ofbullying occurs at the elementary school level staying under the radar and out of sight of watchful teachersand administrators. Bullying can be either direct, with open attacks on a victim or indirect in the form ofsocial isolation and intentional exclusion from a group. The most common form of bullying among bothboys and girls is bullying using words that are hurtful and unpleasant, making a fool of someone, usingnicknames, etc. When you help your child to understand how it feels to walk in another persons shoes, when you teach your child social skills, when you praise your childs kindness toward others you are lettingyour child know that kindness is valued in your home as well as at school. You are increasing the likelihoodof developing a confident resourceful child who has friends and is less likely to be bullied or to bully others. If you think that your child is being bullied call us here at school. Alerted school staff can monitor and take
other steps to ensure your childs safety.
We are committed here at school to improving our students learning environment evidenced in our SchoolWide Positive Behavior program. Respectful, Responsible, Kind, and Safe behaviors are anti-bullyingbehaviors and are part of our on-going prevention efforts. For more information on bullying prevention youmay want to check out additional resources at http://www.pacer.org/bullying/nbpm and http://

The first day we logged laps for the kids who chose to participate
was Thursday, September 6th, in the first week of school. The kidswere excited! Mileage Club is an optional program that takes placeat recess for all the students in all grades. The kids can do it all
recess, part of recess, or not at all on the days that it is offered. Parent volunteers keep trackof the number of laps the kids do around the fitness path during recess. (5 laps around thefitness path equals one mile). We plan to have Mileage Club again every Tuesday andThursday during recesses (11am-1pm), schedules and weather permitting. With the MileageClub the kids get a foot charm to put on a chain for their first mile completed, and then forevery even number mile, for example 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th mile etc they complete after the first,
they get another foot charm. Also, when they complete miles of increments of 5, for exam-ple 5th,10th,15th,20th mile, etc they get a number charm of the number of mile they com-pleted to add to their charm chain. Some kids really, really love those charm chains. Alsoprizes for top performing individuals and classes will be awarded at the end of the year. TheMileage Club is a wonderful program to promote exercise and good health for the kids. Afun option along with the other fun activities are available, kickball, monkey bars, basketballetc that the kids can do at recess. If anyone would like to volunteer to help out with the club
please feel free to e-mail me, alisonbrunner@yahoo.com. Thank you to those who havealready volunteered to help make this program available for the Fogelsville students!
