OCTOPUS

What kind of animal isthe octopus?

Characteristics.

Invertebrate

Acuatic mollusc

Cephalopod

It doesn’t have a

skeleton or spines

It’s oviparous

Cephalopod means «head foot»

The inside organs of the octopus are

protected by a mantle, which consists of

a thick covering of skin and muscle.

Octopuses use their mantle to swim. They

tighten all the mantle muscles at

once, throwing a blast of water from a

tube called the siphon, causing the

octopus to launch forward.

How small do you

think an octopus

can be?

It can be smaller

than a tennis ball!

What do they eat?

Octopuses eat many different

kinds of sea creatures. They like

oysters and clams. They use

their suckers to pull the shells

apart and get the food inside.

They also like lobsters and

crabs. Octopuses have a sharp

beak. They use it to break an

animal's shell. Then it kills the

animal with poison that the octopus makes in its mouth.

Octopuses have a

Where do octopuses live? They live in the

ocean, especially in coral reefs. Octopuses are characterized by their eight arms, usually with sucker cups on them. They are highly intelligent, but have a very short life.

A very famous octopus died a few months

ago. Who knows what his name was?

The mimic octopus can transform into 15

different species. We can see three in

the video, can you remember which?

Reproduction

The octopus mother lays thousands of eggs. She

guards them for weeks. When the baby

octopuses are born, the eggs burst open and

the tiny octopuses swim out. The mother

octopus will die soon after her eggs hatch. She

will never see her babies again. Many babies

will be eaten by fish, birds or other creatures.

The male's penis is in the third tentacle. They lose

the tentacle after mating. But after some time it

will grow a new arm.

How many times does a female octopus reproduce?

Why does she keep

carressing them?

Defending themselves

Octopuses face many dangers in the sea, but they have ways of protecting themselves:

Camouflage - They have special coloring to help them camouflage in their surroundings.

Hiding - The octopus can change colors which can confuse their enemies. They can also hide in holes in the rocks.

Ink cloud - The octopus squirts a dark, inky liquid into the water and then swims away to safety.

Did you

know...?

An octopus can

survive long periods

of time eating it’s

own tentacles. If the

animal finds

food, can

regenerate again.

Did you know…?

The pupils of an

octopus are

quadrangular.
