A MAGICAL EFFECT ‐ Pa ence and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficul es disappear and obstacles vanish.—John Quincy Adams
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent ma-jority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry’s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the “old religion” in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called “Bloody Mary” for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Eliza-beth, rejected papal ties. Un-der her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not at-tending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called “recusants,” from a Latin word meaning “refuse,” since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families main-tained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their de-scendants claim “Recusancy” as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Dear Friends,
First, I want to wish all our Haitian brothers and sisters a very happy feast of Our Lady of Mount Car-mel. May the blessed mother under the title of Mount Carmel continue to bless them and their country.
I want to update you on what has been happening with our restrooms. We were hoping that it would be just a repair, but it is a bigger issue that just an ordinary repair. All the restrooms were backing and the initial conclusion was that there was some blockage in the drain pipes. The plumbing company was out here to clear the blockage but the fix was very short lived, as the water was backing up again within a week. A second at-tempt to clean out the pipes did not solve the problem. So, it was decided to run the camera through the pipes to see what was happening and that was not able to determine the cause of the back flow of water. Finally, they suggested to open up the septic tank and clean it out. It helped only for a short time, before the water started backing up again.
We were back to square one after making all these different attempts to fix the problem. It was determined that the out-flow from the septic tank was not being absorbed by the drain field. So, the next step was to see if we could clean the drain field. They excavated the earth around the drain field only to find out that we have to put in a new drain field in order to solve the problem. This requires a permit from Miami-Dade and the process could be lengthier and costlier than we anticipated. We are not sure about what require-ments Miami-Dade and North Miami Beach will place on us to have the permit. We were hoping that this would be fixed before the feast of Mount Carmel, but we came up with so many obstacles that it could take another month before we have some relief.
While we are trying to do the needful, it is unfortunate that the restrooms are out of service during the Mount Carmel Feast, when the use of them would be at a much higher level. So we were left with no choice but to close down the re-strooms in the Church and use those in the school building. I thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
God bless you all. Fr. George
