Portrait Lightings –I. Forget the “on-camera-flash.”
Most good portraits are made with the light source off the camera.
Here, the light is placed to the left of the subject. Notice the depth that the shadow on the right gives.
This portrait was made with two lights. One to the right of the subject and up high. The other to the left of the subject and down low. Notice how the right side is bright where the left side is a bit
grayer.
This portrait was made with one light, off the camera. Notice, again, the depth
created by the shadow area.
Some Suggestions:
• The trick is to try to get the flash off the camera in order to add depth to your portraits.
• If you are using speedlights such as from Nikon, Canon or Sunpak, investigate what you would need to fire a remote flash from the camera.
• Experiment using household bulbs or lamps.
